5-1. Essential information
When trouble arises
If your vehicle needs to be towed
Situations needs to contact dealers before towing
The following may indicate a problem with your transmission. Contact
any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified
and equipped professional or commercial towing service before tow-
ing.
The engine is running but the vehicle will not move.
The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
Towing with a sling-type truck
Do not tow with a sling-type truck
to prevent body damage.
If towing is necessary, we recommend having your vehicle towed by
any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified
and equipped professional or commercial towing service, using a
lift-type truck or flatbed truck.
Use a safety chain system for all towing, and abide by all state/pro-
vincial and local laws.
If towing your vehicle with a wheel-lift type truck from the front, the
vehicle's rear wheels and axles must be in good conditions.

If they are damaged, use a towing dolly or flatbed truck.

If you have a flat tire (vehicles with a spare tire)
Your vehicle is equipped with a spare tire. The flat tire can be
replaced with the spare tire.
Before jacking up the vehicle
Stop the vehicle on a hard, flat surface.
Set the parking brake.
Vehicles with a Multidrive: Shift the shift lever to P.
Vehicles with a manual transmission: Shift the shift lever to R.
Stop the engine.
Turn on the emergency flashers.

When trouble arises
If you have a flat tire (vehicles with an emergency tire puncture repair kit)
Your vehicle is not equipped with a spare tire, but instead is
equipped with an emergency tire puncture repair kit.
A puncture caused by a nail or screw passing through the tire tread
can be repaired temporarily using the emergency tire puncture repair
kit. (The kit contains a bottle of sealant. The sealant can be used only
once to temporarily repair one tire without removing the nail or
screw from the tire.) Depending on the damage, this kit cannot be
used to repair the tire. (P. 478)
After temporarily repairing the tire with the kit, have the tire repaired
or replaced by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional. Repairs conducted using
the emergency tire puncture repair kit are only a temporary measure.
Have the tire repaired and replaced as soon as possible.
Before repairing the tire
Stop the vehicle in a safe place on a hard, flat surface.
Set the parking brake.
Shift the shift lever to P (vehicles with a Multidrive) or N (vehi-
cles with a manual transmission).
Stop the engine.
Turn on the emergency flashers.

Set the parking brake.
Put the shift lever in N.
Turn the “ENGINE START STOP” switch to ACCESSORY
mode.
Push and hold the “ENGINE START STOP” switch for about
15 seconds while depressing the brake pedal and clutch
pedal firmly.
Even if the engine can be started using the above steps, the system
may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped pro-
fessional.

Ensure that the shift lever is in N and depress the clutch
pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side of
the electronic key to the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch.
The “ENGINE START STOP”
switch will turn to IGNITION ON
mode.
When the smart entry & start sys-
tem is deactivated in customiza-
tion setting, the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch will turn to ACCES-
SORY mode. Modes can be
changed by pressing the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch
with the clutch pedal released.
(The mode changes each time
the switch is pressed.)
Firmly depress the clutch pedal and check that the smart
entry & start system indicator light (green) turns on.
Press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.
In the event that the “ENGINE START STOP” switch still cannot be
operated, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.

Stopping the engine
Vehicles with a Multidrive: Shift the shift lever to P and press the “ENGINE
START STOP” switch as you normally do when stopping the engine.
Except vehicles with a Multidrive: Shift the shift lever to N and press the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch as you normally do when stopping the
engine.
Replacing the key battery
As the above procedure is a temporary measure, it is recommended that the
electronic key battery be replaced immediately when the battery is depleted.

Alarm (if equipped)
Using the mechanical key to lock the doors will not set the alarm system.
If a door is unlocked using the mechanical key when the alarm system is set,
the alarm may be triggered. (P. 117)
If the doors cannot be locked or unlocked by the smart entry & start
system
Lock and unlock the doors by the mechanical key or wireless remote control.
When the electronic key does not work properly
Make sure that the smart entry & start system has not been deactivated in
the customization setting. If it is off, turn the function on.

Changing “ENGINE START STOP” switch modes (if the smart entry &
start system has been deactivated in a customized setting)
Release the brake pedal (except for manual transmission) or clutch pedal
(for manual transmission) and press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch in
above.
The engine does not start and modes will be changed each time the switch
is pressed. (P. 176)

If the vehicle becomes stuck
CAUTION
When attempting to free a stuck vehicle
If you choose to push the vehicle back and forth to free it, make sure the sur-
rounding area is clear to avoid striking other vehicles, objects or people. The
vehicle may also lunge forward or lunge back suddenly as it becomes free.
Use extreme caution.
When shifting the shift lever (Vehicles with a Multidrive)
Be careful not to shift the shift lever with the accelerator pedal depressed.
This may lead to unexpected rapid acceleration of the vehicle that may
cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
Carry out the following procedures if the tires spin or the vehicle
becomes stuck in mud, dirt or snow:
Vehicles with a Multidrive: Stop the engine. Set the parking
brake and shift the shift lever in P.
Vehicles with a manual transmission: Stop the engine. Set
the parking brake and shift the shift lever in N.
Remove the mud, snow or sand from around the stuck tire.
Place wood, stones or some other material under the tires
to help provide traction.
Restart the engine.
Vehicles with a Multidrive: Shift the shift lever to the D or R
and carefully apply the accelerator to free the vehicle.
Vehicles with a manual transmission: Shift the shift lever to
1 or R and carefully apply the accelerator to free the vehi-
cle.
Turn off TRC and VSC if these functions are hampering your
attempts to free the vehicle. (P. 241)
