When hill-start assist control is activated, the buzzer will sound once.
In the following situations, hill-start assist control will be canceled and the
buzzer will sound twice.
• No attempt is made to drive the vehicle within approximately 2 seconds of
releasing the brake pedal.
• Vehicles with a Multidrive: The shift lever is moved to P.
• The parking brake is applied.
• The brake pedal is depressed again.
• The brake pedal has been depressed for more than approximately 3 min-
utes.
If the slip indicator comes on
It may indicate a malfunction in the system. Contact any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.
CAUTION
Hill-start assist control
Do not overly rely on hill-start assist control. Hill-start assist control may
not operate effectively on steep inclines and roads covered with ice.
Unlike the parking brake, hill-start assist control is not intended to hold the
vehicle stationary for an extended period of time. Do not attempt to use
hill-start assist control to hold the vehicle on an incline, as doing so may
lead to an accident.

Perform the following according to the driving conditions:
Do not try to forcibly open a window or move a wiper that is frozen.
Pour warm water over the frozen area to melt the ice. Wipe away
the water immediately to prevent it from freezing.
To ensure proper operation of the climate control system fan,
remove any snow that has accumulated on the air inlet vents in
front of the windshield.
Check for and remove any excess ice or snow that may have accu-
mulated on the exterior lights, vehicle’s roof, chassis, around the
tires or on the brakes.
Remove any snow or mud from the bottom of your shoes before
getting in the vehicle.
Accelerate the vehicle slowly, keep a safe distance between you and
the vehicle ahead, and drive at a reduced speed suitable to road con-
ditions.
Park the vehicle and move the shift lever to P (Multidrive) or R (man-
ual transmission) without setting the parking brake. The parking brake
may freeze up, preventing it from being released. If necessary, block
the wheels to prevent inadvertent sliding or creeping.

CAUTION
When raising your vehicle
Make sure to observe the following precautions to reduce the possibility of
death or serious injury:
When using a floor jack, follow the instructions of the manual provided with
the jack.
Do not use the jack that was supplied with your vehicle.
Do not put any part of your body underneath the vehicle when it is sup-
ported only by the floor jack.
Always use floor jack and/or automotive jack stands on a solid, flat, level
surface.
Do not start the engine while the vehicle is supported by the floor jack.
Stop the vehicle on level firm ground, firmly set the parking brake and shift
the shift lever in P (Multidrive) or R (manual transmission).
Make sure to set the floor jack properly at the jack point.
Raising the vehicle with an improperly positioned floor jack will damage
the vehicle and may cause the vehicle to fall off the floor jack.
Do not raise the vehicle while someone is in the vehicle.
When raising the vehicle, do not place any object on top of or underneath
the floor jack.

Apply the parking brake and turn the engine switch off.
Use wheel chocks for all 4 wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.

Tighten down the towing eyelet
securely using a wheel nut

Securely attach a cable or chain to the towing eyelet.
Take care not to damage the vehicle body.
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system: Enter the vehicle
being towed and start the engine.
If the engine does not start, turn the engine switch to the “ON” position.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system: Enter the vehicle being
towed and start the engine.
If the engine does not start, turn the engine switch to IGNITION ON mode.
Shift the shift lever to N and release the parking brake.
When the shift lever cannot be shifted: P. 5 6 6
While towing
If the engine is not running the power assist for the brakes and steering will
not function, making steering and braking more difficult.
Wheel nut wrench
Vehicles without a wheel nut wrench: Wheel nut wrench can be purchased at
any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.
Vehicles with a wheel nut wrench: Wheel nut wrench is installed in the lug-
gage compartment. (P. 528)

When trouble arises
The following warning indicates a possible problem in the brake sys-
tem. Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.
*: Parking brake engaged warning buzzer:
The buzzer sounds to indicate that the parking brake is still engaged (with
the vehicle having reached a speed of 5 km/h [3 mph]).
If a warning light turns on or a warning
buzzer sounds
Calmly perform the following actions if any of the warning lights
comes on or flashes. If a light comes on or flashes, but then
goes off, this does not necessarily indicate a malfunction in the
system. However, if this continues to occur, have the vehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional.
Stop the vehicle immediately. Continuing to drive the vehicle
may be dangerous.

This light also comes on when the parking brake is not
released. If the light turns off after the parking brake is fully
released the system is operating normally.

When trouble arises
Stop the vehicle on a hard, flat surface.
Set the parking brake.
Shift the shift lever to P (Multidrive) or R (manual transmission).
Stop the engine.
Turn on the emergency flashers. (P. 480)
If you have a flat tire (vehicles with a spare
tire)
Your vehicle is equipped with a spare tire. The flat tire can be
replaced with the spare tire.

CAUTION
If you have a flat tire
Do not continue driving with a flat tire.
Driving even a short distance with a flat tire can damage the tire and the
wheel beyond repair, which could result in an accident.
