ditions indicate a weakening of the belt, which may adversely affe
ct seat belt perfor-
mance in an accident.

d with a Supplemental
Restraint System (SRS), which includes air- bags for the driver and passengers.
The SRS front airbags are designed to supple- ment the primary protection of the driver andfront passenger seat belt systems by provid- ing those occupants w
ith protection against
head and chest injuries
in certain moderate to
severe frontal collisi
ons. The SRS front air-
bags, together with sensors at the front of the vehicle and sensors attached to the frontseats, form an advanced airbag system. The SRS driver’s knee airbag is designed to supplement the primary protection of the driver’s seat belt system. It can reduce the forward movement of the driver’s lower legs and provide increased
overall body protection
in certain moderate to
severe frontal colli-
sions. The SRS side airbags and the curtain airbags are also designed to supp
lement the seat belts.
The SRS side airbags provide the driver and front passenger with pr
otection against chest
injuries by deploying the bag on the sideimpacted in moderate
to severe side impact
collisions. The SRS curtain airbags provide the driver and passengers on the front seatand rear outboard seat
with protection against
head injuries by deploying a bag on the side impacted in moderate
to severe side impact
collisions. The SRS airbags are NOT a substitute for use of the seat belts. For maximum protection in
all types of accident
s, seat belts must
ALWAYS be worn by everyone who drives orrides in this vehicle
(with infants and small
children in an appropriate child restraint sys- tem in the rear seat, and older children buck-led in the rear seat). Refer to “Child restraint systems” on page 4-14.

airbags inflate.

This helps maintain vehicle drivability and steering wheel handling. When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use thesteering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi- cle is equipped with
the anti-lock braking
system, leave a greater braking distancewhen: • Driving on gravel or snow-covered roads.• Driving on uneven road surfaces. Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted situations where brakes areapplied suddenly. Th
is system may also
prevent the wheels from locking when you drive over manholes, steel roadworkplates, road markings
, or any uneven road
surface. When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat- ing and hear a unique sound. It may also feel as if the pedal
resists being pressed.
In this situation, si
mply hold the brake
pedal down firmly. Do not pump the brake, which will result in reducedbraking performance.

If there is a malfunction in the system, the anti-lock braking system warning light will come on.Under normal conditions, the ABS warning light comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operationmode is put in ON and goes off a few seconds later.

makes when performing a self-check. It does not indicate a problem. The anti-lock braking system can be used after the vehicle has

approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). It stops working when the vehicle slows below 3 mph (5 km/h).

NOTE
During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parkingspace), a protection f
unction may be acti-
vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This fu
nction will make the
steering wheel graduall
y harder to turn. In
this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal. If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with
the headlights on, the
headlights may become
dim. This behavior
is not abnormal. The he
adlights will return to
their original brightness after a short while.

When moving out of mud, sand or fresh snow, pressing the acce
lerator pedal may not
allow the engine speed to increase. In suchsituations, temporaril
y turning off ASC with
the “ASC OFF” switch will make it easier to move out your vehicle. If you continue to press the “ASC OFF” switch after the ASC is turned off, the “mis-taken operation protec
tion function” will
activate and the ASC will turn back on.

Store the flat tire in the cargo area. Reverse the removing procedure when stor-ing the spare tire, jack, bar and wheel nut wrench. Refer to “To remove the spare tire” on page8-12 and “Jack and tools” on page 8-5.

Wrap the tip of the bar with a cloth, insert itinto the notch provided in the wheel cover, and pry the cover away from the wheel. Using the same procedur

cover notches, work the wheel cover away from the wheel to remove it completely.

you have no choice but
to drive with an under-inflated tire, keepyour speed down and avoid sudden steering or braking, if possible. Inflate the tire to the correct pressure as soon as possible. Refer to“Tire inflation pressures” on page 9-14. After changing the tire

It is important to familiarize yourself with the following terms:
Cold tire pressure: • The measured pressure after the vehiclehas been parked for at least three hours, or • The measured pressure when the vehicleis driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) after having been parked for three hours.
Maximum pressure: the maximum per- missible cold tire inflation pressure for this tire. Recommended inflation pressure: the inflation pressure for optimum tire perfor- mance. Intended outboard sidewall: • The sidewall that c
ontains a whitewall,
bears white letteri
ng or bears manufac-
turer, brand, and/or model name molding that is higher or deeper than the same molding on the other sidewall of the tire,or • The outward facing si

Passenger car tire: a
tire intended for use
on passenger cars, multipurpose passen- ger vehicles, and trucks that have a gross vehicle weight rati
ng (GVWR) of 10,000
pounds or less.
Light truck (LT) tire
: a tire designated by
its manufacturer as primarily intended foruse on lightweight tr
ucks or multipurpose
passenger vehicles. Tread: portion of a tire that comes into contact with the road. Tread rib: a tread se
ction running circum-
ferentially around a tire. Tread separation: pulling away of the tread from the tire carcass. Carcass: the tire structure, except tread and sidewall rubber which, when inflated, bears the load. Sidewall: portion of a tire between the tread and bead. Section width: the line
ar distance between
the exteriors of the sidewalls of an inflated tire, excluding elevations due to labeling, decoration, or protective bands. Bead: the part of the tire that is made of steel wires, wrapped
or reinforced by ply
cords and that is shaped to fit the rim. Ply: a layer of rubber-coated parallel cords. Cord: the strands forming the plies in the tire. Rim: a metal support for a tire or a tire and tube assembly upon which the tirebeads are seated. Rim diameter: nominal diameter of the bead seat.
Check to see that the battery is securely installed and cannot be moved. Also checkeach terminal for tightness. If you will not be driving your vehicle for a long period of time, remove the battery andstore it in a place where the battery fluid will not freeze. The battery only should be stored with a full charge. Before cleaning the battery, tighten all the filler port caps to keep
dirt and moisture out.
Tires
WA R N I N GDriving with tires that are worn, damaged or improperly inflated is dangerous. These type tire conditions will adverselyaffect vehicle performance. These type tire conditions can also cause a tread separation or blowout which mayresult in an accide

injury or death. Tires, including spar
e tire, degrade over
time with age even when they are not being used. It is recommended that tires over 6 yearsgenerally be replaced even if damage is not obvious.NOTE
