For cleaning your vehicle, do not use any of
the following:
R dry, rough or hard cloths
R abrasive cleaning agents
R solvents
R cleaning agents containing solvents
Do not scrub.
Do not touch the surfaces or protective films
with hard objects, e.g. a ring or ice scraper.
You could otherwise scratch or damage the
surfaces and protective film.
! Do not park up the vehicle for an extended
period straight after cleaning it, particularly
after having cleaned the wheels with wheel
cleaner. Wheel cleaners could cause
increased corrosion of the brake discs and
brake pads/linings. For this reason, you
should drive for a few minutes after cleaning. Braking heats the brake discs and the brake
pads/linings, thus drying them. The vehicle
can then be parked up.
Regular care of your vehicle is a condition for
retaining the quality in the long term.
Use care products and cleaning agents recom-
mended and approved by Mercedes-Benz. Washing the vehicle and cleaning the

Automatic car wash G
WARNING
Braking efficiency is reduced after the vehicle has been washed. There is a risk of an acci-
dent.
After washing the vehicle, brake carefully
while paying attention to the traffic conditions in order to restore full braking efficiency. !
Before driving into an automatic car wash,
make sure that it is suitable for the dimen-
sions of the vehicle. In particular, make sure
that:
R there is enough ground clearance between
the vehicle underbody and the guide rails of the automatic car wash.
R the clearance width of the automatic car
wash is sufficient, particularly the width of
the guide rails
R you enter the automatic car wash straight
and in the centre of the guide rails in order
to avoid damaging the tyres or wheel rims.
Fold in the exterior mirrors before the vehicle is washed. The exterior mirrors could other-
wise be damaged.
! When DISTRONIC PLUS or the HOLD func-
tion is activated, the vehicle brakes automat- ically in certain situations.
To avoid damage to the vehicle, deactivate
DISTRONIC PLUS and the HOLD function in
the following or similar situations:
R when towing away
R in a car wash
! Make sure that:
R the side windows and sliding sunroof are
closed completely.
R the blower for the ventilation/heating is
switched off (OFF button is depressed).
R the windscreen wiper switch is at position
0.
The vehicle could otherwise be damaged.
! In car washes with a towing mechanism,
make sure that the automatic transmission is in transmission position N, otherwise the
vehicle could be damaged.
R Vehicles with a key:
do not remove the key from the ignition
lock. Do not open the driver's door or front-
passenger door when the engine is
switched off. Otherwise, the automatic
transmission selects park position Pauto-
matically and locks the wheels. You can
prevent this by shifting the automatic trans- mission to Nbeforehand.
R Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO:
do not open the driver's door or front-
passenger door when the engine is
switched off. Otherwise, the automatic Care

Cleaning the reversing camera

Do not clean the camera lens and the area
around the reversing camera with a high-pres-
sure cleaner. X
Make sure that the vehicle is stationary and
that the key is in position 2in the ignition lock.

WARNING
The exhaust tail pipe and tail pipe trim can
become very hot. If you come into contact
with these parts of the vehicle, you could burn
yourself. There is a risk of injury.
Always be particularly careful around the
exhaust tail pipe and the tail pipe trim. Allow
these components to cool down before touch-
ing them.
! Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 vehicles with black
exhaust pipes: black chromed exhaust tips
should not be polished with a chrome polish. They will otherwise lose their black shine. For
optimal care, the tips should be rubbed with a lightly oiled cloth after every car wash. Com-
mercially available engine and care oils are
suitable for this.
For heavier soiling, you can apply a fine paint-
work polish with a microfibre cloth. Remove
the excess polish residue after polishing.
Impurities combined with the effects of road grit
and corrosive environmental factors may cause
flash rust to form on the surface. You can
restore the original shine of the exhaust pipe by cleaning it regularly, especially in winter and
after washing the vehicle.
X Clean the exhaust pipe with a chrome care
product tested and approved by Mercedes-
Benz.

X Stop the vehicle as far away as possible from
traffic on solid, non-slippery and level ground.
X Switch on the hazard warning lamps.
X Safeguard the vehicle against rolling away
(Y page 191).
X If possible, bring the front wheels into the
straight-ahead position.
X Vehicles with the AIRMATIC package:
make sure that the normal vehicle level is
selected (Y page 222).
X Vehicles with the Off-Road Engineering
package:
make sure that the normal vehicle

X Switch off the engine.
X Vehicles without KEYLESS-GO: remove the

The on-board electronics now have status 0.
This is the same as the key having been
removed.

Start/Stop button from the ignition lock

X Make sure that the passengers are not endan-
gered as they do so. Make sure that no one is near the danger area while a wheel is being
changed. Anyone who is not directly assisting
in the wheel change should, for example,
stand behind the barrier.
X Get out of the vehicle. Pay attention to traffic
conditions when doing so.
X Close the driver's door.
X Place the warning triangle at a suitable dis-
tance (Y page 386). Observe legal require-
ments.
X Unload heavy luggage.
i Only operate the tyre inflation compressor
using a 12 V socket, even if the ignition is
turned off (Y page 364).
An emergency cut-off ensures that the on-
board voltage does not drop too low. If the on-
board voltage is too low, the power to the
sockets is automatically cut. This ensures
that there is sufficient power to start the
engine. MOExtended tyres (tyres with run-flat
characteristics)
General notes With MOExtended tyres (tyres with run-flat char-
acteristics), you can continue to drive your vehi-
cle even if there is a total loss of pressure in one or more tyres. The affected tyre must not show
any clearly visible damage.
You can recognise MOExtended tyres by the
MOExtended marking which appears on the tyre
wall. You will find this marking next to the tyre
size designation, the load-bearing capacity and
the speed index.
MOExtended tyres may only be used in conjunc- tion with an activated tyre pressure loss warning
system or tyre pressure monitor.
If a pressure loss warning message appears in the multifunction display:
R observe the instructions in the display mes-
sages (Y page 330)
R check the tyre for damage
R if driving on, observe the following notes
The driving distance possible in run-flat mode is approximately 80 km when the vehicle is parti-
ally laden and approximately 30 km when the

The highly flammable gas mixture is created
while the battery is charging and when jump-
starting.
Always make sure that neither you nor the bat-
tery is electrostatically charged. Electrostatic
charge is created, for example:
R by wearing synthetic fibre clothing
R by friction between clothing and the seat
R when you pull or push the battery across car-
pet or other synthetic materials
R when you rub the battery with a cloth G
WARNING
During the charging process, a battery produ- ces hydrogen gas. If a short circuit occurs or
sparks are created, the hydrogen gas can
ignite. There is a risk of an explosion.
R Make sure that the positive terminal of a
connected battery does not come into con- tact with vehicle parts.
R Never place metal objects or tools on a bat-
tery.
R It is important that you observe the descri-
bed order of the battery terminals when
connecting and disconnecting a battery.
R When jump-starting, make sure that the
battery poles with identical polarity are
connected.
R It is particularly important to observe the
described order when connecting and dis-
connecting the jump leads.
R Never connect or disconnect the battery
terminals while the engine is running. G

They must be collected sep-

! Have the battery checked regularly at a
qualified specialist workshop.

! Always have work on the batteries carried
out at a qualified specialist workshop. Should
it, in exceptional circumstances, be abso-
lutely necessary to disconnect the 12-volt
battery yourself, please observe the follow-
ing:
R secure the vehicle to prevent it from rolling
away.
R switch the ignition off.
R first, disconnect the negative terminal, fol-
lowed by the positive terminal.
The transmission is locked in position Pafter
disconnecting the battery.
After the work has been completed, firmly
reinstall the battery and the cover of the pos- itive terminal.
Comply with safety precautions and take pro-
tective measures when handling batteries. Risk of explosion
Fire, naked flames and smoking are
prohibited when handling the bat-

For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom-
mends that you only use batteries which have
been tested and approved for your vehicle by
Mercedes-Benz. These batteries provide
increased impact protection to prevent vehicle
occupants from suffering acid burns should the battery be damaged in the event of an accident.
In order for the battery to achieve the maximum possible service life, it must always be suffi-
ciently charged.
Like other batteries, the vehicle battery may
discharge over time if you do not use the vehicle.In such cases, have the battery disconnected ata qualified specialist workshop. You can also
charge the battery with a charger recommended
by Mercedes-Benz. For more information,
please contact a qualified specialist workshop.
Have the battery charge checked more fre-
quently if you use the vehicle mainly for short
trips or if you leave it standing idle for a lengthy period. Consult a qualified specialist workshop
if you wish to leave your vehicle parked up for a
long period of time.
When you park the vehicle, remove the key if you do not require any electrical consumers. The
vehicle will then use very little energy, thus con- serving battery power.
PLUG-IN HYBRID vehicles: if the battery
charge is sufficient, the high-voltage battery can also supply the 12 V battery. This only happens
if the battery charge of the 12 V battery requires this, e.g. after using electrical consumers for anextended period with the engine switched off. As the on-board voltage is continuously moni-
tored this can also be performed when the
engine is switched off. The battery charge of the
12 V battery and the on-board voltage are
thereby kept stable for longer.
If the power supply has been interrupted, e.g. if the battery was discharged, you will have to:
R set the clock. Information on setting the clock
can be found in the Digital Owner's Manual.
On vehicles with a multimedia system and
navigation system, the clock is set automati-
cally.
R reset the function for folding the exterior mir-
rors in/out automatically, by folding the mir-
rors out once (Y page 118). High-voltage battery - important
safety notes
Only PLUG-IN HYBRID vehicles are equipped
with a high-voltage battery. G
DANGER
The vehicle's high voltage electrical system is under high voltage. If you modify components
in the vehicle's high-voltage electrical system or touch damaged components, you may be
electrocuted. The components in the vehi-
cle's high-voltage electrical system may be
damaged in an accident, although the damage
is not visible. There is a risk of fatal injury.
Do not touch any high-voltage components
after an accident and never modify the vehi-
cle's high-voltage electrical system. Have the vehicle towed away after an accident and the vehicle's high-voltage electrical system
checked by a qualified specialist workshop. G
WARNING
In the event of a vehicle fire, the internal pres- sure of the high-voltage battery could exceeda critical value. In this case, flammable gas
escapes through a vent valve in the vehicle's
underbody. The gas can ignite. There is a risk
of injury.
Leave the danger area immediately. Secure
the danger area at a suitable distance, whilst
observing legal requirements. 394

If the housing of the high-voltage battery has
been damaged, electrolyte and gases may
leak out. These are poisonous and caustic.

standing idle for lengthy periods can damage

wish to leave your vehicle parked up for a long

Particularly avoid fire, naked flames, creating
sparks and smoking. Ensure there is sufficient
ventilation while charging and jump-starting.

tures below freezing point. When jump-start-
ing the vehicle or charging the battery, gases can escape from the battery. There is a risk of
an explosion. Allow the frozen battery to thaw out before
charging it or jump-starting.
! Only use battery chargers with a maximum
charging voltage of 14.8 V.
! Only
charge the battery using the jump-start
connection point.
The jump-starting connection point is in the
engine compartment (Y page 397).
X Open the bonnet.
X Connect the battery charger in the same
order as when connecting the donor battery
during jump-starting: to the positive terminal
and earth point (Y page 397).
Keep away from fire and open flames. Do not
lean over the battery. Never charge the battery
if it is still fitted to the vehicle, unless you use a
battery charger which has been tested and
approved by Mercedes-Benz. A battery charger
unit specially adapted for Mercedes-Benz vehi-
cles and tested and approved by Mercedes-
Benz is available as an accessory. This device
permits charging of the battery in position. Con- tact a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre for infor-
mation and availability. Read the battery charg-
er's operating instructions before charging the
battery.
If the indicator/warning lamps do not light up at
low temperatures, it is very likely that the dis-
charged battery has frozen. In this case you may
neither jump-start the vehicle nor charge the
battery. The service life of a battery that has
been thawed may be reduced. The starting char-
acteristics may be impaired, especially at low
temperatures. Have the thawed battery
checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
PLUG-IN HYBRID vehicles: if the battery
charge is sufficient, the high-voltage battery can also supply the 12 V battery. This only happens
if the battery charge of the 12 V battery requires this, e.g. after using electrical consumers for anextended period with the engine switched off.
As the on-board voltage is continuously moni-
tored this can also be performed when the
engine is switched off. The battery charge of the
12 V battery and the on-board voltage are

Charging the high-voltage battery
when stationary (hybrid vehicles)
Only PLUG-IN HYBRID vehicles are equipped
with a high-voltage battery. G
WARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Inhaling
these exhaust gases leads to poisoning. There is a risk of fatal injury. Therefore never leave
the engine running in enclosed spaces with-
out sufficient ventilation.
! Only charge the high-voltage battery in the
"Charging when stationary" mode. Do not
connect a battery charger to the high-voltage battery. Otherwise, the vehicle's high-voltage
electrical system could be damaged.
X Stop the vehicle if the internal combustion
engine is running.
The internal combustion engine drives the
electric motor. The electric motor is operating
as an alternator. The high-voltage battery is
charging.
If the high-voltage battery is too heavily dis-
charged, recharge the high-voltage battery to at least 60% of its capacity. In the "Charging when
stationary" operating mode, you can observe
the charge status of the high-voltage battery up to a maximum of 70% in the COMAND display
and in the multifunction display (Y page 264).396

Jump-starting
For the jump-starting procedure, use only the jump-starting connection point, consisting of a pos- itive terminal and an earth point, in the engine compartment. G
