bility in tight bends, for example. It can only be
activated when the dipped-beam headlamps are
switched on.
Active:
R if you are driving at speeds below 40 km/h
and switch on the turn signal or turn the steer- ing wheel.
R if you are driving at speeds between 40 km/h
and 70 km/ hand turn the steering wheel.
The cornering light function may remain lit for a
short time, but is automatically switched off
after no more than three minutes.
Cornering light function with roundabout
function:
The cornering light function is activated on both sides before entering a roundabout through an
evaluation of the current GPS position of the
vehicle. It remains active until after the vehicle
has left the roundabout. In this way, pedestrians crossing the road, for example, are illuminated
by your vehicle in good time.
Motorway mode Motorway mode increases the range of the
beam.
Active: if you are driving at a speed above
110 km/h and do not make any large steering
movements for at least 1,000 m or if you are
driving at a speed above 130 km/h.
Not active: if you are driving at speeds below
80 km/h following activation. Extended range foglamps The extended range foglamps reduce the glare
experienced by the driver and improve the illu-
mination of the edge of the carriageway.
Active:
if you are driving at speeds below
70 km/h and you switch on the rear foglamp.
Not active: if, following activation, you are driv-
ing at speeds above 100 km/h or if you switch
off the rear foglamp.
Off-road lights The off-road lights facilitate the early recogni-
tion of objects/obstacles when driving off-road
thanks to a symmetrical, wider and brighter dis-
tribution of light from the dipped-beam head-
lamps.
Active: when driving at speeds no faster than
50 km/h and the off-road program selector
wheel is in position 1 or 2.
Not active: when driving at speeds above
50 km/h.
When the off-road lights are switched on, the
cornering light function is permanently activa-
ted, the active light function is deactivated and
the headlamp range control is set to static
mode. Exterior lighting

tion correctly at all times. Have the headlamp
setting checked regularly. Replacing bulbs (vehicles with halo-
gen headlamps) Important safety notes
G
WARNING
Bulbs, lamps and plug connectors can
become very hot during use. When replacing a bulb, you could burn yourself on these com-
ponents. There is a risk of injury.
Allow these components to cool down before replacing the bulb.
Do not use a bulb that has been dropped or if its glass tube has been scratched.
The bulb may explode if:
R you touch it
R it is hot
R you drop it
R you scratch it
Only operate bulbs in enclosed lamps designed
for that purpose. Only fit spare bulbs of the same
type and the specified voltage. Marks on the glass tube reduce the service life
of the bulbs. Do not touch the glass tube with
your bare hands. If necessary, clean the glass
tube when cold with alcohol or spirit and rub it
off with a lint-free cloth.
Protect bulbs from moisture during operation.
Do not allow bulbs to come into contact with
liquids.
Only replace the bulbs listed (Y page 128).
Have the bulbs that you cannot replace yourself
replaced at a qualified specialist workshop.
If you require assistance replacing bulbs, con-
sult a qualified specialist workshop.
If the new bulb still does not light up, consult a
qualified specialist workshop.

Switching the windscreen wipers on/
off
! Do not operate the windscreen wipers when
the windscreen is dry, as this could damage
the wiper blades. Moreover, dust that has col-
lected on the windscreen can scratch the
glass if wiping takes place when the wind-
screen is dry.
If it is necessary to switch on the windscreen wipers in dry weather conditions, always
operate them using washer fluid.
! If the windscreen wipers leave smears on
the windscreen after the vehicle has been
washed in an automatic car wash, this may be
due to wax or other residue. Clean the wind-
screen with washer fluid after an automatic
car wash.
! Intermittent wiping with rain sensor: due to
optical influences and the windscreen becom-
ing dirty in dry weather conditions, the wind-
screen wipers may be activated inadvertently. This could damage the windscreen wiper
blades or scratch the windscreen.
For this reason, you should always switch off
the windscreen wipers in dry weather. Combination switch

In the ÄorÅ position, the appropriate
wiping frequency is set automatically according to the intensity of the rain. In the Åposition,
the rain sensor is more sensitive than in the

wipe more frequently.
Vehicles with MAGIC VISION CONTROL: the
washer fluid is fed through the wiper blades and when wiping with washer fluid îthe washer
fluid is emitted directly from the blades.
If the wiper blades are worn, the windscreen will
no longer be wiped properly. This could mean
you are unable to observe the traffic conditions. 130

Selecting the drive program
DISTRONIC PLUS supports a sporty driving style
if you have selected the SportorSport Plus
drive program (Y page 171). Acceleration
behind the vehicle in front or to the set speed is then noticeably more dynamic. If you have
selected the Comfortdrive program, the vehicle
accelerates more gently. This setting is recom-
mended in stop-start traffic.
Changing lanes If you change to the overtaking lane, DISTRONIC
PLUS supports you if:
R you are driving faster than 70 km/h
R you switch on the respective turn signal
R DISTRONIC PLUS does not detect a danger of
collision
If these conditions are met, your vehicle is accel- erated. Acceleration will be interrupted if chang-
ing lanes takes too long or if the distance
between your vehicle and the vehicle in front
becomes too small.
i Vehicles with COMAND Online:
when you
change lanes, DISTRONIC PLUS monitors the right lane in the case of left-side traffic or the
left lane in the case of right-side traffic.
Vehicles with Audio 20: when you change
lanes, DISTRONIC PLUS monitors the left lane on left-hand-drive vehicles or the right lane onright-hand-drive vehicles.
Vehicles with COMAND Online i
The following function is only available in
vehicles with the Driving Assistance Plus
package.
The function is not operational in all coun-
tries. DISTRONIC PLUS uses additional information
from your navigation system so that it can adapt
to certain traffic situations. This is the case if,
while following a vehicle, DISTRONIC PLUS is
active and you:
R approach or drive around a roundabout
R approach a T-junction
R turn off at a motorway exit
R approach a tollgate
Even if the vehicle in front leaves the detection
range, DISTRONIC PLUS temporarily maintains
the current driving speed and does not acceler- ate. This is based on the current map data in the
navigation system.
Afterwards, the vehicle accelerates back to the
set speed you specified.
The system takes into account the fact that
overtaking on the right is not permitted on
motorways or high-speed major roads at speeds
above 80 km/h. The driving speed is adjusted to the speed of the queue of vehicles in the adja-
cent lane to the left.
i Prevention of overtaking on the right applies
to countries where traffic drives on the right.
In countries where traffic drives on the left,
overtaking on the left is prevented accord-
ingly.
Stopping G
WARNING
When leaving the vehicle, even if it is braked
only by DISTRONIC PLUS, it could roll away if:
R there is a malfunction in the system or in
the voltage supply.
R DISTRONIC PLUS has been deactivated
with the cruise control lever, e.g. by a vehi- cle occupant or from outside the vehicle.
R the electrical system in the engine com-
partment, the battery or the fuses have
been tampered with.
R the battery is disconnected.
R the accelerator pedal has been depressed,
e.g. by a vehicle occupant.
There is a risk of an accident.
If you wish to exit the vehicle, always turn off
DISTRONIC PLUS and secure the vehicle
against rolling away. 210

and right), only focusing on the vehicle in front if
detected lane markings are not present.
If these conditions are not present, Steering
Assist and Stop&Go Pilot cannot provide assis-
tance.
DISTRONIC PLUS must be active in order for the
function to be available.
Important safety notes If you fail to adapt your driving style, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot
can neither reduce the risk of an accident nor
override the laws of physics. It cannot take into
account road, weather or traffic conditions.
DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and
Stop&Go Pilot is only an aid. You are responsible
for the distance to the vehicle in front, for vehi- cle speed, for braking in good time and for stay-
ing in lane.
DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and
Stop&Go Pilot does not detect road and traffic
conditions and does not detect all road users. If you are following a vehicle which is driving
towards the edge of the carriageway, your vehi-cle could come into contact with the kerb or
other road boundaries. Be particularly aware of
other road users, e.g. cyclists, that are directly
next to your vehicle.
Obstacles such as traffic pylons on the lane or
projecting out into the lane are not detected.
An inappropriate steering intervention, e.g. after
intentionally driving over a lane marking, can be
corrected at any time if you steer slightly in the opposite direction.
DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and
Stop&Go Pilot cannot continuously keep your
vehicle in lane. In some cases, the steering
intervention is not sufficient to bring the vehicle back to the lane. In such cases, you must steer
the vehicle yourself to ensure that it does not
leave the lane.
The support offered by the system may be
impaired if:
R there is poor visibility, e.g. due to insufficient
illumination of the road, or due to snow, rain, fog or spray
R there is glare, e.g. from oncoming traffic, the
sun or reflection from other vehicles (e.g. if
the road surface is wet)
R the windscreen is dirty, misted up, damaged
or covered, for instance by a sticker, in the
vicinity of the camera R
no or several, unclear lane markings are pres-
ent for one lane, e.g. in a construction area
R the lane markings are worn away, dark or cov-
ered up, e.g. by dirt or snow
R the distance to the vehicle in front is too small
and the lane markings thus cannot be detec-
ted
R the lane markings change quickly, e.g. lanes
branch off, cross one another or merge
R the road is narrow and winding
R there are highly variable shade conditions on
the road
The system is switched to passive and no longer assists you by performing steering interventions
if:
R you actively change lane
R you switch on the turn signal
R you take your hands off the steering wheel or
do not steer for a prolonged period of time
i After you have finished changing lanes,
Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot are auto-
matically active again.
Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot cannot pro-
vide assistance:
R on very sharp corners
R when towing a trailer
R a loss of tyre pressure or a defective tyre has
been detected and displayed
Pay attention also to the important safety notes
for DISTRONIC PLUS (Y page 207).
The steering interventions are carried out with a limited steering moment. The system requires
the driver to keep his hands on the steering
wheel and to steer himself.
If you do not steer yourself or if you take your
hands off the steering wheel for a prolonged
period of time, the system will first alert you with
a visual warning. A steering wheel symbol
appears in the multifunction display. If you have
still not started to steer and have not taken hold of the steering wheel after five seconds at the
latest, a warning tone also sounds to remind you
to take control of the vehicle. Steering Assist
and Stop&Go Pilot switch to passive mode.
DISTRONIC PLUS remains active. Driving systems

the parking space.
When driving at speeds below 30 km/h, you will
see parking symbol ;as a status indicator in
the instrument cluster. When a parking space
has been detected, an arrow towards the right or the left also appears. Active Parking Assist only
displays parking spaces on the front-passenger side as standard. Parking spaces on the driver's
side are displayed as soon as the turn signal on the driver's side is activated. When parking on
the driver's side, this must remain activated
until you confirm the use of Active Parking Assist by pressing the abutton on the multifunc-
tion steering wheel. The system automatically
determines whether the parking space is paral-
lel or at right angles to the direction of travel.
A parking space is displayed while you are driv-
ing past it, and until you are approximately 15 m away from it.

PARKTRONIC is still available.
Parking tips:
R The way your vehicle is positioned in the park-
ing space after parking is dependent on vari-
ous factors. These include the position and
shape of the vehicles parked in front and
behind it and the conditions of the location. It
may be the case that Active Parking Assist
guides you too far into a parking space, or not
far enough into it. In some cases, it may also
lead you across or onto the kerb. If necessary, you should cancel the parking procedure with
Active Parking Assist.
R You can also preselect transmission position
D. The vehicle redirects and does not drive as
far into the parking space. Should the trans-
mission change take place too early, the park-
ing procedure will be cancelled. A sensible
parking position can no longer be achieved
from this position.
Exiting a parking space In order that Active Parking Assist can support
you when exiting the parking space:
R the border of the parking space must be high
enough at the front and the rear. A kerb stone
is too small, for example.
R the border of the parking space must not be
too wide, as the position of the vehicle must
not exceed an angle of 45° to the starting
position as it is manoeuvred into the parking
space.
R a manoeuvring distance of at least 1.0 mmust
be available.
Active Parking Assist can only assist you with
exiting a parking space if you have parked the
vehicle parallel to the direction of travel using
Active Parking Assist.

taken into account when observing the max-
imum permitted speed.

Traffic Sign Assist detect that you are driving in the wrong direction. You will then also hear a
warning tone. You should immediately check
your direction of travel in order to avoid danger
to yourself and other road users.
i This function is not available in all countries. Lane Tracking package
General notes The Lane Tracking package consists of Blind
Spot Assist (Y page 244) and Lane Keeping
Assist (Y page 246).
Blind Spot Assist General notes
Blind Spot Assist monitors the areas on either
side of the vehicle that are not visible to the
driver with two lateral, rear-facing radar sen-
sors. A warning display in the exterior mirrors
draws your attention to vehicles detected in the
monitored area. If you then switch on the cor-
responding turn signal to change lanes, you will also receive a visual and audible collision warn-
ing.
Blind Spot Assist supports you from a speed of
approximately 30 km/h.
Important safety notes G
WARNING
Blind Spot Assist does not react to vehicles:
R overtaken too closely on the side, placing
them in the blind spot area
R when the difference in the speed of
approach and overtaking is too great
As a result, Blind Spot Assist cannot warn
drivers in these situations. There is a risk of an accident.
Always pay careful attention to the traffic sit- uation and maintain a safe distance at the side
of the vehicle.
Blind Spot Assist is only an aid. It may fail to
detect some vehicles and is no substitute for
attentive driving. Always ensure that there is
sufficient distance to the side for other road
users and obstacles. 244
