What to do in an emergency
IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY WHILST DRIVING
If the engine stalls at a crossroad
or crossing
 If the engine stalls at a crossroad or crossing, set the shift lever in the N
(Neutral) position and then push the
vehicle to a safe place.
 If your vehicle has a manual transaxle not equipped with a ignition lock
switch, the vehicle can move forward
by shifting to the 2(Second) or 3(Third)
gear and then turning the starter with-out depressing the clutch pedal. If you have a flat tyre whilst driv- ing
If a tyre goes flat whilst you are driving:
1. Take your foot off the accelerator pedal
and let the vehicle slow down whilst
driving straight ahead. Do not apply the
brakes immediately or attempt to pull
off the road as this may cause a loss of
control. When the vehicle has slowed
to such a speed that it is safe to do so,
brake carefully and pull off the road.
Drive off the road as far as possible
and park on firm, level ground. If you
are on a divided highway, do not park
in the median area between the two
traffic lanes.
2. When the vehicle is stopped, turn on your emergency hazard flashers, set
the parking brake and put the transaxle
in P (automatic transaxle) or reverse
(manual transaxle).
3. Have all passengers get out of the vehicle. Be sure they all get out on the
side of the vehicle that is away from
traffic.
4. When changing a flat tyre, follow the instruction provided later in this sec-tion. If engine stalls whilst driving
1. Reduce your speed gradually, keeping
a straight line. Move cautiously off the
road to a safe place.
2. Turn on your emergency flashers.
3. Try to start the engine again. If your vehicle does not start, we recommend
that you consult an authorised Kia
dealer.

IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT START
If engine doesn't turn over or
turns over slowly
1. If your vehicle has an automatic transaxle, be sure the shift lever is in N
(Neutral) or P (Park) and the emer-
gency brake is set.
2. Check the battery connections to be sure they are clean and tight.
3. Turn on the interior light. If the light dims or goes out when you operate the
starter, the battery is discharged.
4. Check the starter connections to be sure they are securely tightened.
5. Do not push or pull the vehicle to start it. See instructions for "Jump starting". If engine turns over normally but
does not start
1. Check fuel level.
2. With the ignition switch in the LOCK/
OFF position, check all connectors at
ignition, coil and spark plugs.
Reconnect any that may be discon-
nected or loose.
3. Check the fuel line in the engine com- partment.
4. If the engine still does not start, we recommend that you call an autho-
rised Kia dealer.
WARNING
If the engine does not start, do not
push or pull the vehicle to start it.This could result in a collision or
cause other damage. In addition,
push or pull starting may cause the
catalytic converter (if equipped) to
be overloaded and create a fire haz-
ard.

Removing and storing the spare tyre
Turn the tyre hold-down wing bolt (1)
counterclockwise.
Store the tyre in the reverse order of
removal.
To prevent the spare tyre and tools
from “rattling” whilst the vehicle is in
motion, store them properly. Changing tyres
1. Park on a level surface and apply
the parking brake firmly.
2. Shift the shift lever into R (Reverse) with manual transaxle or P (Park)
with automatic transaxle.
3. Activate the hazard warning flasher.

 The vehicle can easily roll off the jack causing serious
injury or death.
 Do not get under a vehicle that is supported by a jack.
 Do not start or run the engine whilst the vehicle is on the
jack.
 Do not allow anyone to remain in the vehicle whilst it is on
the jack.
 Make sure any children pres- ent are in a secure place away
from the road and from the
vehicle to be raised with the
jack.

4. Remove the wheel lug nut wrench,jack, jack handle, and spare tyre
from the vehicle.
5. Block both the front and rear of the wheel that is diagonally opposite
the jack position. 6. Loosen the wheel lug nuts coun-
terclockwise one turn each, but do
not remove any nut until the tyre
has been raised off the ground.
WARNING - Changing a tyre
 To prevent vehicle movement
whilst changing a tyre, always
set the parking brake fully,
and always block the wheel
diagonally opposite the wheel
being changed.
 We recommend that the wheels of the vehicle be
chocked, and that no person
remain in a vehicle that is
being jacked.

7. Place the jack at the front (1) or
rear (2) jacking position closest to
the tyre you are changing. Place
the jack at the designated loca-
tions under the frame. The jacking
positions are plates welded to the
frame with two tabs and a raised
dot to index with the jack. 8. Insert the jack handle into the jack
and turn it clockwise, raising the
vehicle until the tyre just clears the
ground. This measurement is
approximately 30 mm (1.2 in).
Before removing the wheel lug
nuts, make sure the vehicle is sta-
ble and that there is no chance for
movement or slippage. 9. Loosen the wheel nuts and
remove them with your fingers.Slide the wheel off the studs and
lay it flat so it cannot roll away. To
put the wheel on the hub, pick up
the spare tyre, line up the holeswith the studs and slide the wheel
onto them. If this is difficult, tip thewheel slightly and get the top holein the wheel lined up with the top
stud. Then jiggle the wheel back
and forth until the wheel can be
slid over the other studs.
WARNING - Jack location
To reduce the possibility of
injury, be sure to use only the
jack provided with the vehicle
and in the correct jack position;
never use any other part of the
vehicle for jack support.

10. To reinstall the wheel, hold it onthe studs, put the wheel nuts on the studs and tighten them finger
tight. The nuts should be installedwith their tapered small diameter
ends directed inward. Jiggle thetyre to be sure it is completely
seated, then tighten the nuts as
much as possible with your fin-gers again.
11. Lower the vehicle to the ground by turning the wheel nut wrench
counterclockwise. Then position the wrench as shown
in the drawing and tighten the wheel
nuts. Be sure the socket is seated
completely over the nut. Do not standon the wrench handle or use an
extension pipe over the wrench han-
dle. Go around the wheel tightening
every nut following the numerical
sequence shown in the image until
they are all tight. Then double-check
each nut for tightness. After changing
wheels, we recommend that the sys-
tem be checked by an authorised Kia
dealer.
WARNING
 Wheels and wheel covers may have sharp edges. Handle
them carefully to avoid possi-
ble severe injury.
 Before putting the wheel into place, be sure that there isnothing on the hub or wheel
(such as mud, tar, gravel, etc.)
that interferes with the wheel
from fitting solidly against the
hub. If there is, remove it. Ifthe contact of the mountingsurface between the wheel
and hub is not good, the
wheel nuts could come looseand cause loss of a wheel.
Loss of a wheel may result in
losing control of the vehicle.
This may cause serious injuryor death.

Failure to place the transaxle shift

When towing your vehicle in an emer- gency without wheel dollies :
1. Set the ignition switch in the ACC posi-
tion.
2. Place the transaxle shift lever in N (Neutral).
3. Release the parking brake.
Removable towing hook (if equipped)
1. Open the tailgate/boot, and removethe towing hook from the tool case.
2. Remove the hole cover pressing the lower part of the cover on the front
bumper.
3. Install the towing hook by turning it clockwise into the hole until it is fullysecured.
4. Remove the towing hook and install the cover after use.

CAUTION - Automatic
transaxle / Double clutch transmission
 If the car is being towed with all four wheels on the ground, it can
be towed only from the front. Be sure that the transaxle is in neu-tral. Be sure the steering isunlocked by placing the ignition
switch in the ACC position. Adriver must be in the towed vehi- cle to operate the steering and
brakes.
 To avoid serious damage to the automatic transaxle, limit thevehicle speed to 15 km/h (10 mph) and drive less than 1.5 km (1 mile)
when towing.
 Use a towing strap less than 5 m (16 feet) long. Attach a white or red cloth (about 30 cm (12 inches) wide) in the
middle of the strap for easy visibility.
 Drive carefully so that the towing strap is not loosened during towing.
Emergency towing precautions
 Turn the ignition switch to ACC so thesteering wheel isn’t locked.
 Place the transaxle shift lever in N (Neutral).
 Release the parking brake.
 Depress the brake pedal with more force than normal since you will have
reduced brake performance.
 More steering effort will be required because the power steering system
will be disabled.
 If you are driving down a long hill, the brakes may overheat and brake per-
formance will be reduced. Stop often
and let the brakes cool off.
