Power brakes
Your vehicle has power-assisted brakes
that adjust automatically through normal
usage.
If the engine is not running or is turned
off while driving, the power assist for the
brakes will not work. You can still stop
your vehicle by applying greater force to
the brake pedal than typical. The stop-
ping distance, however, will be longer
than with power brakes.
When the engine is not running, the
reserve brake power is partially depleted
each time the brake pedal is applied. Do
not pump the brake pedal when the
power assist has been interrupted.
Pump the brake pedal only when neces-
sary to maintain steering control on slip-
pery surfaces. BRAKING SYSTEM (Continued)
To dry the brakes, lightly tap the brake pedal to heat up the brakes
while maintaining a safe forward
speed until brake performance
returns to normal. Avoid drivingat high speeds until the brakes
function correctly.WARNING
Take the following precautions:
Do not drive with your foot rest- ing on the brake pedal. This will create abnormal high brake tem-
peratures, excessive brake lining
and pad wear, and increasedstopping distances.
When descending a long or steep hill, shift to a lower gear and
avoid continuous application of
the brakes. Applying the brakes
continuously will cause the
brakes to overheat and could
result in a temporary loss of brak-
ing performance.
Wet brakes may impair the vehi- cle’s ability to safely slow down;
the vehicle may also pull to oneside when the brakes are applied.
Applying the brakes lightly will
indicate whether they have been
affected in this way. Always test
your brakes in this fashion after
driving through deep water.

Check the Parking Brake Warning Light
by placing the ignition switch to the ON
position (do not start the engine). This light will be illuminated when the
parking brake is applied with the ignition
switch in the START or ON position.
Before driving, be sure the parking brake
is released and the Brake Warning Light
is OFF.
If the Parking Brake Warning Light
remains on after the parking brake is
released while engine is running, there
may be a malfunction in the brake sys-
tem. Immediate attention is necessary.If at all possible, cease driving the vehi-
cle immediately. If that is not possible,
use extreme caution while operating the
vehicle and only continue to drive the
vehicle until you can reach a safe loca-tion.

CAUTION
Do not apply the accelerator
pedal while the parking brake is
engaged. If you depress theaccelerator pedal with the park-ing brake engaged, the warning will sound. Damage to the parking
brake may occur.
Driving with the parking brake on can overheat the braking systemand cause premature wear or
damage to brake parts. Make surethe parking brake is released andthe Brake Warning Light is offbefore driving.

On loose or uneven road surfaces, oper-
ation of the anti-lock brake system mayresult in a longer stopping distance than
for vehicles equipped with a conventional
brake system.
The ABS warning light ( ) will stay on
for several seconds after the ignition
switch is in the ON position. During that
time, the ABS will go through self-diag-
nosis and the light will go off if everything
is normal. If the light stays on, you may
have a problem with your ABS. We rec-
ommend that you contact an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible✽✽NOTICE
When you jump start your vehicle
because of a drained battery, the engine
may not run as smoothly and the ABS
warning light ( ) may turn on at the
same time. This happens because of the
low battery voltage. It does not mean
your ABS is malfunctioning. Have the
battery recharged before driving the
vehicle.WARNING
If the ABS warning light ( ) is on
and stays on, you may have a prob-
lem with the ABS. Your power
brakes will work normally. To
reduce the risk of serious injury or
death, we recommend that you con-
tact your HYUNDAI dealer as soon
as possible.
CAUTION
When you drive on a road having poor traction, such as an icy road,
and apply your brakes continuous-ly, the ABS will be active continu-ously and the ABS warning light ( ) may illuminate. Pull your car
over to a safe place and turn the engine off.
Restart the engine. If the ABS warn-ing light is off, then your ABS sys-
tem is normal. Otherwise, you mayhave a problem with your ABS sys- tem. We recommend that you con-tact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer
as soon as possible.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) (if equipped) The Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
system helps to stabilize the vehicle dur-
ing cornering maneuvers. ESC checks
where you are steering and where the
vehicle is actually going. ESC applies braking pressure to any one
of the vehicle’s brakes and intervenes inthe engine management system to assist
the driver with keeping the vehicle on the
intended path. It is not a substitute for
safe driving practices. Always adjust your
speed and driving to the road conditions.
ESC operation
ESC ON condition
When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the ESC and the ESC OFF indi-
cator lights illuminate for approximately
three seconds and goes off, then the
ESC is turned on.
If this light stays on, your vehicle may
have a malfunction with the ESC system.
We recommend that the vehicle be
checked by an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer as soon as possible.
WARNING
Never drive too fast for the road
conditions or too quickly when cor-
nering. The ESC system will not
prevent accidents. Excessive
speed in turns, abrupt maneuvers,
and hydroplaning on wet surfaces
can result in severe accidents.

To cancel ESC operation,
press the ESC OFF button(ESC OFF indicator light illumi-nates).
If the ignition switch is placed to the LOCK/OFF position
when ESC is off, ESC remains
off. Upon restarting the engine,
the ESC will automatically turnon again.
Indicator lights
When the ignition switch is placed to the ON position, the ESC indicator light illu-
minates, then goes off if the ESC system
is operating normally.
The ESC indicator light blinks whenever
the ESC is operating.
If ESC indicator light stays on, your vehi-
cle may have a malfunction with the ESC
system. When this warning light illumi-
nates we recommend that the vehicle be
checked by an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer as soon as possible. The ESC OFF indicator light comes on
when the ESC is turned off with the but-ton.

ESC OFF usage
When driving The ESC OFF mode should only be used
briefly to help free the vehicle if stuck in
snow or mud by temporarily stopping
operation of the ESC to maintain wheel
torque.
To turn ESC off while driving, press the
ESC OFF button while driving on a flat
road surface.✽✽
NOTICE
Turning the ESC OFF does not affect
ABS or standard brake system opera-
tion.
CAUTION
Driving with varying tire or wheel sizes may cause the ESC system to
malfunction. When replacing tires,make sure they are the same size asyour original tires for this vehicle.
CAUTION
To prevent damage to the transaxle:
Do not allow wheel(s) of one axle to spin excessively while the
ESC, ABS, and brake warninglights are displayed. The repairswould not be covered by the vehi- cle warranty. Reduce engine
power and do not spin thewheel(s) excessively while these lights are displayed.
When operating the vehicle on a dynamometer, ensure the ESC isturned off (ESC OFF light illumi- nated).
WARNING
When the ESC is blinking, this indi- cates the ESC is active:
Drive slowly and NEVER attempt to
accelerate. NEVER press the ESC
OFF button while the ESC indicator
light is blinking or you may lose
control of the vehicle resulting inan accident.

Non-operational conditions of rearparking assist system
Rear parking assist system OFF button
Push the button to turn off the rear park- ing assist system (the indicator light willilluminate). The rear parking assist system may
not operate normally when:
Moisture is frozen to the sensor.
The sensor is covered or stained with
foreign matter, such as snow or water,
or the sensor cover is blocked.
There is a possibility of a parkingassist system malfunction when:
Driving on uneven road surfaces such as unpaved roads, gravel, bumps, or
gradient.
Objects generating excessive noise such as vehicle horns, loud motorcycle
engines, or truck air brakes can inter-
fere with the sensor.
Heavy rain or water spray is present.
Wireless transmitters or mobile phones are present near the sensor.
The sensor is covered with snow.
Any non-factory equipment or acces- sories have been installed, or if the
vehicle bumper height or sensor instal-lation has been modified. Detecting range may decrease when:
Outside air temperature is extremely
hot or cold.
Undetectable objects smaller than about 1 m (40 inches) and narrower than about
14 cm (6 inches) in diameter.
The following objects may not be rec-
ognized by the sensor:
Sharp or slim objects such as ropes, chains or small poles.
Objects, which tend to absorb sensor frequency such as clothes, spongy
material or snow.
WARNING
Your new vehicle warranty does not
cover any accidents or damage to
the vehicle or injuries to its occu-pants do to a rear parking assist
system malfunction. Always drive
safely and cautiously.

Hazardous driving conditions
When hazardous driving conditions are
encountered such as water, snow, ice,
mud or sand:
Drive cautiously and allow extra distance
for braking.
Avoid sudden movements in braking or
steering.
If stuck in snow, mud, or sand, use sec-
ond gear. Accelerate slowly to avoid spin-
ning the drive wheels.
Use sand, rock salt, or other non-slip
material under the drive wheels to pro-
vide traction when stalled in ice, snow, or
mud. Rocking the vehicle
If it is necessary to rock the vehicle to
free it from snow, sand, or mud, first turn
the steering wheel right and left to clear
the area around your front wheels. Then,
shift back and forth between 1st and R
(Reverse, for manual transaxle vehicle)
or R (Reverse) and a forward gear (for
automatic transaxle vehicle). Try to avoid
spinning the wheels, and do not race the
engine.
To prevent transaxle wear, wait until the
wheels stop spinning before shifting
gears. Release the accelerator pedalwhile shifting, and press lightly on the
accelerator pedal while the transaxle is in
gear. Slowly spinning the wheels in for-
ward and reverse directions causes a
rocking motion that may free the vehicle.
SPECIAL DRIVING CONDITIONS
WARNING
Downshifting with an automatic
transaxle, while driving on slipperysurfaces can cause an accident.
The sudden change in tire speed
could cause the tires to skid. Be
careful when downshifting on slip-
pery surfaces.
WARNING
If the tires spin at high speed the
tires can explode, and you or oth-
ers may be injured. Do not attempt
this procedure if people or objects
are anywhere near the vehicle.
The vehicle can overheat causing
an engine compartment fire or
other damage. Spin the wheels as
little as possible and avoid spin-
ning the wheels at speeds over 56km/h (35 mph) as indicated on the
speedometer.
CAUTION
If you are still stuck after rocking the vehicle a few times, have thevehicle pulled out by a tow vehicle to avoid engine overheating, possi- ble damage to the transaxle, and
tire damage. See “Towing” in chap- ter 6.
To prevent damage to the transaxle,turn OFF the ESC (if equipped) priorto rocking the vehicle.
