Ignition switch position
LOCK
The steering wheel locks to protect
against theft. The ignition key can be
removed only in the LOCK position.
When turning the ignition switch to the
LOCK position, push the key in slightly at
the ACC position and turn the key
towards the LOCK position.
ACC (Accessory)
The steering wheel is unlocked and elec-
trical accessories are usable.

NOTICE
If difficulty is experienced turning the
ignition switch to the ACC position, turn
the key while turning the steering wheel
right and left to release the tension.
ON
The warning lights can be checked
before the engine is started. This is the
normal running position after the engine
has started.
Do not leave the ignition switch in the ON position when the engine is not runningto prevent the battery from discharging.
START
Turn the ignition switch to the START
position to start the engine. The switch
returns to the ON position when you let
go of the key.

NEVER turn the ignition switch
to the LOCK or ACC position
while the vehicle is in motion
except in an emergency. This willresult in the engine turning off
and loss of power assist for the
steering and brake systems. This
may lead to loss of directional
control and braking function,
which could cause an accident.
Before leaving the driver's seat, always make sure the shift lever
is in 1st gear (for manual
transaxle vehicle) or P (Park, for
automatic transaxle vehicle)
position, apply the parking brake,
and turn ignition switch to the
LOCK position. Unexpected vehi-
cle movement may occur if these
precautions are not followed.
NEVER reach through the steer- ing wheel for the ignition switch,
or any other control, while the
vehicle is in motion. The pres-
ence of your hand or arm in this
area may cause a loss of vehicle
control resulting in an accident.

ACC(Accessory)
With manual transaxle
Press the engine start/stop button when
the button is in the OFF position withoutdepressing the clutch pedal.
With automatic transaxle
Press the engine start/stop button while it is in the OFF position without depressing
the brake pedal.
The steering wheel unlocks (if equipped
with anti-theft steering column lock) and
electrical accessories are usable.
If you leave the engine start/stop button
in the ACC position for more than one
hour, the battery power will turn off auto-
matically to prevent the battery from dis-charging.
ON
With manual transaxle
Press the engine start/stop button when
the button is in the ACC position withoutdepressing the clutch pedal.
With automatic transaxle
Press the engine start/stop button while it
is in the ACC position without depressing
the brake pedal.
The warning lights can be checked
before the engine is started. If you leave
the engine start/stop button in the ON
position for more than one hour, the bat-
tery power will turn off automatically to
prevent the battery from discharging.
WARNING
To turn the engine off in an emer-
gency: Press and hold the Engine
Start/Stop button for more than two
seconds OR Rapidly press and
release the Engine Start/Stop but-ton three times (within three sec-onds).
If the vehicle is still moving, you
can restart the engine without
depressing the brake pedal by
pressing the Engine Start/Stop but-
ton with the shift lever in the N(Neutral) position.

Manual transaxle operation
The manual transaxle has five forward
gears. The transaxle is fully synchronized
in all forward gears so shifting to either a
higher or a lower gear is easily accom-plished.To shift to R (Reverse), make sure the
vehicle has completely stopped, and
then move the shift lever to neutral before
moving into R (Reverse).
When you've come to a complete stop and it's hard to shift into 1st gear or R
(Reverse):
1. Put the shift lever in neutral and
release the clutch pedal.
2. Depress the clutch pedal, and then shift into first or R (Reverse) gear.

NOTICE
During cold weather, shifting may be
difficult until the transaxle lubricant
has warmed up.
Using the clutch
The clutch pedal should be depressed all
the way to the floor before:
- Starting the engine The engine will not start without
depressing the clutch pedal. (vehicles
equipped with engine start/stop button)
- Shifting When releasing the clutch pedal, release
it slowly. The clutch pedal should always
be released while driving.

CAUTION
To prevent unnecessary wear or
damage to the clutch:
Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving.
Do not hold the vehicle with the clutch on an incline, while waitingfor the traffic light, etc.
Always depress the clutch pedal down fully to prevent noise ordamage.
WARNING
Before leaving the driver’s seat,
always make sure the shift lever is
in 1st gear when the vehicle isparked on a uphill and in R
(Reverse) on a downhill, set the
parking brake, and place the igni-
tion switch in the LOCK/OFF posi-
tion. Unexpected vehicle movement
may occur if these precautions are
not followed.

Parking
Always come to a complete stop and
continue to depress the brake pedal.
Move the shift lever into the P (Park)
position, apply the parking brake, and
place the ignition switch in the
LOCK/OFF position. Take the Key with
you when exiting the vehicle. Good driving practices
Never move the shift lever from P
(Park) or N (Neutral) to any other posi-
tion with the accelerator pedaldepressed.
Never move the shift lever into P (Park) when the vehicle is in motion.
Be sure the vehicle is completely stopped before you attempt to shift into
R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
Do not move the shift lever to N (Neutral) when driving. Doing so mayresult in an accident because of a loss
of engine braking and the transaxlecould be damaged.
Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. Even light, but consis-tent pedal pressure can result in the
brakes overheating, brake wear and
possibly even brake failure.
When driving in sports mode, slow down before shifting to a lower gear.
Otherwise, the lower gear may not be
engaged if the engine rpms are out-
side of the allowable range.
Always apply the parking brake when leaving the vehicle. Do not depend on
placing the transmission in P (Park) to
keep the vehicle from moving. Exercise extreme caution when driving
on a slippery surface. Be especially
careful when braking, accelerating or
shifting gears. On a slippery surface,
an abrupt change in vehicle speed can
cause the drive wheels to lose traction
and may cause loss of vehicle controlresulting in an accident
Optimum vehicle performance and economy is obtained by smoothly
depressing and releasing the accelera-
tor.
WARNING
When you stay in the vehicle with
the engine running, be careful not
to depress the accelerator pedal for
a long period of time. The engine or
exhaust system may overheat and
start a fire.
The exhaust gas and the exhaust
system are very hot. Keep away
from the exhaust system compo-nents.
Do not stop or park over flammable
materials, such as dry grass, paper
or leaves. They may ignite and
cause a fire.

Power brakes
Your vehicle has power-assisted brakes
that adjust automatically through normal
usage.
If the engine is not running or is turned
off while driving, the power assist for the
brakes will not work. You can still stop
your vehicle by applying greater force to
the brake pedal than typical. The stop-
ping distance, however, will be longer
than with power brakes.
When the engine is not running, the
reserve brake power is partially depleted
each time the brake pedal is applied. Do
not pump the brake pedal when the
power assist has been interrupted.
Pump the brake pedal only when neces-
sary to maintain steering control on slip-
pery surfaces. BRAKING SYSTEM (Continued)
To dry the brakes, lightly tap the brake pedal to heat up the brakes
while maintaining a safe forward
speed until brake performance
returns to normal. Avoid drivingat high speeds until the brakes
function correctly.WARNING
Take the following precautions:
Do not drive with your foot rest- ing on the brake pedal. This will create abnormal high brake tem-
peratures, excessive brake lining
and pad wear, and increasedstopping distances.
When descending a long or steep hill, shift to a lower gear and
avoid continuous application of
the brakes. Applying the brakes
continuously will cause the
brakes to overheat and could
result in a temporary loss of brak-
ing performance.
Wet brakes may impair the vehi- cle’s ability to safely slow down;
the vehicle may also pull to oneside when the brakes are applied.
Applying the brakes lightly will
indicate whether they have been
affected in this way. Always test
your brakes in this fashion after
driving through deep water.

Disc brakes wear indicator
When your brake pads are worn and new
pads are required, you will hear a high
pitched warning sound from your front or
rear brakes. You may hear this sound
come and go or it may occur whenever
you depress the brake pedal.
Please remember some driving condi-
tions or climates may cause a brake
squeal when you first apply (or lightly
apply) the brakes. This is normal and
does not indicate a problem with your
brakes.

NOTICE
Always replace brake pads as complete
front or rear axle sets.
Rear drum brakes (if equipped)
Your rear drum brakes do not have wear
indicators. Therefore, have the rear brake
linings inspected if you hear a rear brake
rubbing noise. Also have your rear
brakes inspected each time you change
or rotate your tires and when you have
the front brakes replaced.
Parking brake
Always set the parking brake before leav-
ing the vehicle, to apply:
Firmly depress the brake pedal.
Pull up the parking brake lever as far as
possible.
CAUTION
To avoid costly brake repairs, donot continue to drive with wornbrake pads.

To release:
Firmly depress the brake pedal.
Slightly pull up the parking brake lever.
While pressing the release button (1),
lower the parking brake (2).
If the parking brake does not release or
does not release all the way, we recom-
mend that the system be checked by an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
WARNING
Whenever leaving the vehicle or parking, always come to a com-
plete stop and continue to
depress the brake pedal. Move
the shift lever into the 1st gear
(for manual transaxle vehicle) or
P (Park, for automatic transaxle
vehicle) position, then apply the
parking brake, and place the igni-
tion switch in the LOCK/OFFposition.
Vehicles with the parking brake
not fully engaged are at risk for
moving inadvertently and caus-
ing injury to yourself or others.
NEVER allow anyone who is unfa- miliar with the vehicle to touch
the parking brake. If the parking
brake is released unintentionally,
serious injury may occur.
Only release the parking brake when you are seated inside the
vehicle with your foot firmly onthe brake pedal.

Check the Parking Brake Warning Light
by placing the ignition switch to the ON
position (do not start the engine). This light will be illuminated when the
parking brake is applied with the ignition
switch in the START or ON position.
Before driving, be sure the parking brake
is released and the Brake Warning Light
is OFF.
If the Parking Brake Warning Light
remains on after the parking brake is
released while engine is running, there
may be a malfunction in the brake sys-
tem. Immediate attention is necessary.If at all possible, cease driving the vehi-
cle immediately. If that is not possible,
use extreme caution while operating the
vehicle and only continue to drive the
vehicle until you can reach a safe loca-tion.

CAUTION
Do not apply the accelerator
pedal while the parking brake is
engaged. If you depress theaccelerator pedal with the park-ing brake engaged, the warning will sound. Damage to the parking
brake may occur.
Driving with the parking brake on can overheat the braking systemand cause premature wear or
damage to brake parts. Make surethe parking brake is released andthe Brake Warning Light is offbefore driving.
