Why didn’t my air bag go off in a collision?
(Air bags are not designed to
inflate in every collision.)
There are certain types of accidents in
which the air bag would not be expected
to provide additional protection. These
include rear impacts, second or third col-
lisions in multiple impact accidents, as
well as low speed impacts. Damage to
the vehicle indicates a collision energy
absorption, and is not an indicator of
whether or not an air bag should haveinflated.Air bag collision sensors
WARNING
To reduce the risk of an air bag
deploying unexpectedly and caus-
ing serious injury or death:
Do not hit or allow any objects to impact the locations where air
bags or sensors are installed.
Do not perform maintenance on or around the air bag sensors. Ifthe location or angle of the sen-
sors is altered, the air bags may
deploy when they should not or
may not deploy when theyshould.

Do not install bumper guards orreplace the bumper with a non-
genuine part. This may adversely
affect the collision and air bag
deployment performance.

Just before impact, drivers often brake
heavily. Such heavy braking lowers the
front portion of the vehicle causing it to
“ride” under a vehicle with a higher
ground clearance. Air bags may not
inflate in this "under-ride" situation
because deceleration forces that are
detected by sensors may be significantly
reduced by such “underride” collisions.Air bags may not inflate in rollover acci-
dents because air bag deployment could
not provide protection to the occupants.
However, side impact and curtain air
bags may inflate when the vehicle is
rolled over by a side impact collision, if
the vehicle is equipped with side impact
air bags and curtain air bags
Also, if the vehicle is equipped with a
rollover sensor, side impact and curtain
air bags may inflate in a rollover.Air bags may not inflate if the vehicle col-lides with objects such as utility poles or
trees, where the point of impact is con-
centrated and the collision energy is
absorbed by the vehicle structure.

Air bag warning light (if equipped)
This warning light will illuminate for
approximately 6 seconds each time you
turn the ignition switch to the ON position.This light also comes on when the
Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is
not working properly. If the air bag warn-
ing light does not come on, or continu-
ously remains on after operating for
about 6 seconds when you turned the
ignition switch to the ON position or start-
ed the engine, or if it comes on while
driving, we recommend that the system
be inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer.
Anti-lock brake system
(ABS) warning light (if equipped)
This warning light illuminates if the igni-
tion switch is turned to the ON position
and goes off after approximately 3 sec-
onds if the system is operating normally.
If the ABS warning light remains on,
comes on while driving, or does not
come on when the ignition switch is
turned to the ON position, this indicates
that the ABS may have malfunctioned.
If this occurs, we recommend that the
system be checked by an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer. The normal braking
system will still be operational, but with-
out the assistance of the anti-lock brakesystem. Electronic brake force distri-
bution (EBD) system warning
light
If these two warning lights illuminate at the same time
while driving, your vehicle’s
ABS and EBD system may have mal-functioned.
In this case, your ABS and regular brake
system may not work normally. We rec-
ommend that the system be checked by
an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
WARNING
If both ABS and Brake warning
lights are on and stay on, your vehi-
cle’s brake system will not work
normally during sudden braking. In
this case, avoid high speed driving
and abrupt braking. We recommend
that the system be checked by an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) (if equipped)
ABS is an electronic braking system that
helps prevent a braking skid. ABS allows
the driver to steer and brake at the same
time.Using ABS
To obtain the maximum benefit from your ABS in an emergency situation, do not
attempt to modulate your brake pressure
and do not try to pump your brakes.
Depress your brake pedal as hard as
possible.
When you apply your brakes under con-
ditions which may lock the wheels, you
may hear sounds from the brakes, or feel
a corresponding sensation in the brake
pedal. This is normal and it means your
ABS is active. ABS does not reduce the time or dis-
tance it takes to stop the vehicle.
Always maintain a safe distance from the
vehicle in front of you.
ABS will not prevent a skid that results from sudden changes in direction, such
as trying to take a corner too fast or mak-
ing a sudden lane change. Always drive
at a safe speed for the road and weather
conditions.
ABS cannot prevent a loss of stability.
Always steer moderately when braking
hard. Severe or sharp steering wheel
movement can still cause your vehicle to
veer into oncoming traffic or off the road.(Continued)
The safety features of an ABS or
ESC equipped vehicle should not
be tested by high speed driving or
cornering. This could endanger the
safety of yourself or others.
WARNING
An Anti-Lock Braking System
(ABS) or an Electronic Stability
Control (ESC) system will not pre-
vent accidents due to improper or
dangerous driving maneuvers.
Even though vehicle control is
improved during emergency brak-
ing, always maintain a safe dis-
tance between you and objects
ahead of you. Vehicle speeds
should always be reduced during
extreme road conditions. The brak-
ing distance for cars equipped with
ABS or ESC may be longer than forthose without these systems in the
following road conditions.
Drive your vehicle at reduced
speeds during the following condi-tions:
Rough, gravel or snow-covered roads.
On roads where the road surface is pitted or has different surface height.
Tire chains are installed on your vehicle.

On loose or uneven road surfaces, oper-
ation of the anti-lock brake system mayresult in a longer stopping distance than
for vehicles equipped with a conventional
brake system.
The ABS warning light ( ) will stay on
for several seconds after the ignition
switch is in the ON position. During that
time, the ABS will go through self-diag-
nosis and the light will go off if everything
is normal. If the light stays on, you may
have a problem with your ABS. We rec-
ommend that you contact an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible✽✽NOTICE
When you jump start your vehicle
because of a drained battery, the engine
may not run as smoothly and the ABS
warning light ( ) may turn on at the
same time. This happens because of the
low battery voltage. It does not mean
your ABS is malfunctioning. Have the
battery recharged before driving the
vehicle.WARNING
If the ABS warning light ( ) is on
and stays on, you may have a prob-
lem with the ABS. Your power
brakes will work normally. To
reduce the risk of serious injury or
death, we recommend that you con-
tact your HYUNDAI dealer as soon
as possible.
CAUTION
When you drive on a road having poor traction, such as an icy road,
and apply your brakes continuous-ly, the ABS will be active continu-ously and the ABS warning light ( ) may illuminate. Pull your car
over to a safe place and turn the engine off.
Restart the engine. If the ABS warn-ing light is off, then your ABS sys-
tem is normal. Otherwise, you mayhave a problem with your ABS sys- tem. We recommend that you con-tact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer
as soon as possible.

ESC OFF usage
When driving The ESC OFF mode should only be used
briefly to help free the vehicle if stuck in
snow or mud by temporarily stopping
operation of the ESC to maintain wheel
torque.
To turn ESC off while driving, press the
ESC OFF button while driving on a flat
road surface.✽✽
NOTICE
Turning the ESC OFF does not affect
ABS or standard brake system opera-
tion.
CAUTION
Driving with varying tire or wheel sizes may cause the ESC system to
malfunction. When replacing tires,make sure they are the same size asyour original tires for this vehicle.
CAUTION
To prevent damage to the transaxle:
Do not allow wheel(s) of one axle to spin excessively while the
ESC, ABS, and brake warninglights are displayed. The repairswould not be covered by the vehi- cle warranty. Reduce engine
power and do not spin thewheel(s) excessively while these lights are displayed.
When operating the vehicle on a dynamometer, ensure the ESC isturned off (ESC OFF light illumi- nated).
WARNING
When the ESC is blinking, this indi- cates the ESC is active:
Drive slowly and NEVER attempt to
accelerate. NEVER press the ESC
OFF button while the ESC indicator
light is blinking or you may lose
control of the vehicle resulting inan accident.

Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) (if equipped) The Emergency Stop Signal system
alerts the driver behind by blinking the
stop light when the vehicle brakes rapid-
ly and severely.
The system is activated when:
The vehicle suddenly stops (vehiclespeed is over 55km/h (34mph) and the
vehicle deceleration is greater than7m/s2).
The ABS is activating. When vehicle speed is under 40 km/h
(25mph) and the ABS deactivates or
the sudden stop situation is over, the
stop light will stop blinking. Instead, the
hazard warning flasher will turn on
automatically. The hazard warning
flasher will turn off when vehicle speed
is over 10km/h (6mph) after the vehicle
has stopped. Also, it will turn off when
the vehicle is driven at low speed for
some time. You can turn it off manually
by pressing the hazard warning flasher
switch. Good braking practices
Wet brakes can be dangerous! The
brakes may get wet if the vehicle is driv-
en through standing water or if it is
washed. Your vehicle will not stop as
quickly if the brakes are wet. Wet brakes
may cause the vehicle to pull to one side.
To dry the brakes, apply the brakes light-
ly until the braking action returns to nor-
mal, taking care to keep the vehicle
under control at all times. If the braking
action does not return to normal, stop as
soon as it is safe to do so and we rec-
ommend that you call an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer for assistance.
DO NOT drive with your foot resting on
the brake pedal. Even light, but constant
pedal pressure can result in the brakes
overheating, brake wear, and possibly
even brake failure.
If a tire goes flat while you are driving,
apply the brakes gently and keep the
vehicle pointed straight ahead while you
slow down. When you are moving slowly
enough for it to be safe to do so, pull off
the road and stop in a safe location.
Keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal
when the vehicle is stopped to prevent
the vehicle from rolling forward.
WARNING
Whenever leaving the vehicle or
parking, always come to a complete
stop and continue to depress the
brake pedal. Move the shift lever
into the 1st gear (for manual
transaxle vehicle) or P (Park, for
automatic transaxle vehicle) posi-
tion, then apply the parking brake,
and place the ignition switch in theLOCK/OFF position.
Vehicles with the parking brake not
fully engaged are at risk for moving
inadvertently and causing injury to
yourself or others.

Non-operational conditions of rearparking assist system
Rear parking assist system OFF button
Push the button to turn off the rear park- ing assist system (the indicator light willilluminate). The rear parking assist system may
not operate normally when:
Moisture is frozen to the sensor.
The sensor is covered or stained with
foreign matter, such as snow or water,
or the sensor cover is blocked.
There is a possibility of a parkingassist system malfunction when:
Driving on uneven road surfaces such as unpaved roads, gravel, bumps, or
gradient.
Objects generating excessive noise such as vehicle horns, loud motorcycle
engines, or truck air brakes can inter-
fere with the sensor.
Heavy rain or water spray is present.
Wireless transmitters or mobile phones are present near the sensor.
The sensor is covered with snow.
Any non-factory equipment or acces- sories have been installed, or if the
vehicle bumper height or sensor instal-lation has been modified. Detecting range may decrease when:
Outside air temperature is extremely
hot or cold.
Undetectable objects smaller than about 1 m (40 inches) and narrower than about
14 cm (6 inches) in diameter.
The following objects may not be rec-
ognized by the sensor:
Sharp or slim objects such as ropes, chains or small poles.
Objects, which tend to absorb sensor frequency such as clothes, spongy
material or snow.
WARNING
Your new vehicle warranty does not
cover any accidents or damage to
the vehicle or injuries to its occu-pants do to a rear parking assist
system malfunction. Always drive
safely and cautiously.
