On vehicles fitted with HDi engines, the fuel
system must be primed if you run out of fuel;
refer to the corresponding engine compartment
view.

checks
DS5_en_Chap09_verifications_ed01-2015
Checking levels
Take care when working under the bonnet, as certain areas of the engine may be extremely hot (risk of burns) and the cooling fan could start at
any time (even with the ignition off).
Engine oil level
The check is carried out either when
the ignition is switched on using the
oil level indicator in the instrument
panel for vehicles so equipped, or
using the dipstick.
It is normal to top up the oil level between
two services (or oil changes). CITROËN
recommends that you check the level, and top
up if necessary, every 3 000 miles (5 000 kms). To ensure that the reading is correct,
your vehicle must be parked on a level
sur face with the engine having been off
for more than 30 minutes.
Check all of these levels regularly, in line with the manufacturer's service schedule. Top them up if necessary, unless other wise indicated.
If a level drops significantly, have the corresponding system checked by a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop.checking using the dipstick
Refer to the "Petrol engine" or "Diesel engine"
section for the location of the dipstick in the
engine compartment of your vehicle.
F
T
ake the dipstick by its coloured grip and
remove it completely.
F
W
ipe the end of the dipstick using a clean
non-fluffy cloth.
F
R
efit the dipstick and push fully down, then
pull it out again to make the visual check:
the correct level is between the marks A
and B . A = MA X
B = MIN
If you find that the level is above the A mark or
below the B mark, do not star t the engine .
-
I
f the level is above the MAX mark (risk
of damage to the engine), contact a
CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop.
-
I
f the level is below the MIN mark, you
must top up the engine oil.
DS5_en_Chap09_verifications_ed01-2015
coolant level
The coolant level should be close
to the "MA X" mark but should never
exceed it.
Fluid specification
The coolant must conform to the
manufacturer's recommendations. In addition, as the cooling system is
pressurised, wait at least one hour after
switching off the engine before carrying
out any work.
To avoid any risk of scalding, unscrew
the cap by two turns to allow the
pressure to drop. When the pressure
has dropped, remove the cap and top
up the level.
When the engine is warm, the temperature of
the coolant is regulated by the fan.
The cooling fan may star t after switching
off the engine: take care with ar ticles and
clothing that might be caught by the fan
blades.
Specification of the fluid
To ensure optimum cleaning and to avoid
freezing, the fluid should never be topped up or
replaced by plain water.
In wintry conditions, the use of an ethyl alcohol
or methanol base fluid is recommended.
Screenwash / headlamp
wash level
To check the level or top up the fluid on vehicle
fitted with headlamp washers, immobilise the
vehicle and switch of the engine.
F
B
efore opening the bonnet, ensure that the
engine has completely stopped.
F
O
pen the screenwash reservoir filler cap. F
Take and pinch the level gauge to block its
breather.
F Remove the gauge completely from the reservoir to read the level in the transparent section.
F Top up if necessary.F Refit the filler cap to the reservoir and close the bonnet.

under the bonnet.
T
his number is engraved on the bodywork
near the damper support. The tyre pressures must be checked
when the tyres are cold, at least once
a month.
If the tyre pressures are too low, this
increases fuel consumption.

his number is indicated on a self-adhesive
label which is visible through the windscreen.

yre/paint label.
T
his label is affixed to the centre pillar, on
the driver's side. It bears the following information:

The electronic power super visor (4)
manages the operation of the two power units, HDi Diesel and electric, giving priority to low fuel consumption.
The alternator-starter motor (5) assures the
Stop & Star t function, which allows the HDi Diesel engine to be put into standby when the vehicle is at a standstill (traffic lights, a stop, or in a traffic jam...) or during phases of running in 100% electric mode. The stopping and restarting of the HDi Diesel engine is done automatically and instantly without any action on the part of the driver. This alternator-starter motor also provides additional charging of the high-voltage battery by the HDi Diesel engine, if this not sufficiently charged, or in 4WD mode for example.
The 12 V batter y , located under the bonnet, 12 V batter y , located under the bonnet, 12 V batter y
powers the vehicle's conventional electrical system. It is used for starting the HDi Diesel engine and the operation of the vehicle's equipment, such as the lighting, wipers, audio system... This 12 V battery is recharged automatically by the high voltage network.
9Hybrid4 system
DS5Hy4_en_Chap00c_hybride_ed01-2015
When the Hybrid4 system is started, this indicator lamp comes on to signal that the vehicle is ready to move off.
Illumination of this indicator lamp is more or less instant but may take a few seconds in some cases (pre-heating the HDi Diesel engine in cold weather or in energy economy mode...).
READY lamp
Never leave the Hybrid4 system on when leaving the vehicle, or opening the bonnet, refuelling... Before leaving the vehicle, ensure that the RE ADY lamp is off. RE ADY lamp is off. RE ADY
better energy recovery). This allows the high voltage battery to be recharged using "free" energy which can then be reused for future energy requirements.
CHARGE zone
POWER zone
Indicates an increased cumulative power demand from your vehicle, taking account of the combined power available from the HDi Diesel engine and the electric motor.
Power indicator
The indicator dial displays information on the total power used in real time, combining electric and Diesel. It comprises three operating zones.
Indicates that the vehicle is optimising its energy consumption , electric, Diesel or a combination of both.
ECO zone
This zone corresponds to phases of electric running as well as to phases of optimum use of the HDi Diesel engine, which are easily accessible with a suitable driving style (smooth "eco-citizen" driving).
Indicates that the vehicle is in
an electrical energy recoveryphase: on deceleration, braking (partially or particularly with your foot off the accelerator, to use in preference as this gives
17Hybrid4 system
DS5Hy4_en_Chap00c_hybride_ed01-2015
Switching off the Hybrid4
system
Immobilise the vehicle. Place the gear selector in position N . Make a short press (about one second) on the " START/STOP " button. The Hybrid4 stops: - the RE ADY lamp goes off, RE ADY lamp goes off, RE ADY
- the steering column locks, - the electric parking brake is applied automatically, unless its automatic mode is deactivated. Check that the parking brake warning lamps are on. Remove the electronic key from the reader.
Before doing anything under the bonnet, the Hybrid4 must be switched off ( RE ADY lamp off) and the electric RE ADY lamp off) and the electric RE ADYparking brake must be applied.
Check that the RE ADY lamp is off RE ADY lamp is off RE ADYbefore leaving the vehicle. Never leave the electronic key in the vehicle in your absence.
For reasons of safety and theft protection,
do not leave your electronic key in the vehicle, even when you are close to it. It is recommended that you keep it on your person.
Switching the ignition on
With the electronic key in the reader or the Keyless Entry and Starting key inside the vehicle, pressing the " START/STOP " button, with no action on the brake pedal , allows the ignition to be switched on.
Press the " START/STOP " button, the instrument panel comes on but the Hybrid4 system does not start up.
With the ignition on, the system goes into energy economy mode when necessary to maintain the state of charge of the battery.
Press this button again to switch off the ignition and so allow the vehicle to be l o c k e d .
