-If the indicator light and the message ap­
pear
when the vehicle is stationary or after
switching the ignition on,
check if you can
release the parking brake . If you cannot re­
lease the parking brake, see your authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facili­
ty. If you can release the parking brake and
the message still appears, see an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facili­
ty immediately to have the malfunction cor­
rected.
- If the indicator light and message appear
while driving, the hill start assist or emer­
gency braking function may be malfunction­
ing.
It may not be possible to set the park­
ing brake or release it once it has been set.
Do not park your vehicle on hills and see an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility for assistance.
(USA models): If the. and&] indicator
lights turn on together, take your vehicle to an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility immediately to have the brake
pads inspected c;, page 22 .
There is also a warning tone when the lights
turn on.

brake fluid level.
-If the brake system indicator light does
not turn off or it turns on while driving,
the brake fluid level in the reservoir is
too low, and this increases the risk of an
accident. Stop the vehicle and do not
continue driving. See an authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility
for assistance.
-If the brake system indicator light turns
on together with the ABS and ESC indica­
tor lights, the ABS/ESC regulating func­
tion may be malfunctioning. Functions
that stabilize the vehicle are no longer
available . This could cause the rear of the
vehicle to swerve, which increases the

risk that the vehicle will slide. Drive care­
fully to the nearest authorized Audi deal­
er or authorized Audi Service Facility and have the malfunction corrected.

brake

indicator light turns on, the parking brake was
set.

tion: Vehicle parked too steep
When the indicator light blinks and this mes ­
sage appears, there is not enough braking
power to keep the vehicle from rolling. The
brakes have overheated. The vehicle could roll
away even on a small incline .

If the indicator turns on, the catalytic convert­
er may be damaged .
Drive
with reduc ed engine perfo rm ance
(avo id h igh speeds for extended periods of
time and/or fast accelerat ion) and have the
malfunction corrected. See an authorized Audi
dealer o r authorized Aud i Service Facility .
The indicator may turn on if the electron ic
speed limiter is faulty. For additional informa­

On-Board Diagnostics

On -Board Diagnostics monito rs the compo ­
nents of you r emission control system . Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code . In case of a ma l­
function, the component will be ident ified
and the fau lt stored as a code in the control
module memory.
The MIL light may a lso illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery sys­
tem. If the light illuminates after a refue lling,
stop the veh icle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is properly closed

In order to make an accurate d iagnosis, the
~ stored data can only be displayed us ing spe-
o iii cial diag nostic equipment (gener ic scan tool
:;, for OBD) .

In order to connect t he specia l diagnostic
equipment, pus h the plug into the Data Link
Connector (DLC). The D LC is located to the
right of the hood release

Your authorized Audi dea ler or a qualified
service station can interpret the code and per­
form the necessary repair.

Do not use t he diagnostic connector for
personal use. Incorrect usage can cause
malfunctions, wh ic h can increase the risk
of a collision!
Electronic speed limiter *
Applies to vehicles: wit h electro nic s peed limiter

Your vehicle may be factory equipped w ith
t ires that are rated for a maximum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h). Thi s is less tha n the
maximum speed of your vehicle. To reduce t he
risk of sudden tire fai lure and loss of contro l if
the ve hicle is operated at excessive speeds,
your vehicle a lso has an e lectronic speed limit­
er . T he e lectronic speed limiter prevents your
vehicle from go ing faster than the tire speed
rating . For more information

If the engine contro l unit receives faulty vehi­
cle road speed signa ls, the Ma lfunction Indi­
cator Lamp (MIL)
¢'4 will illuminate. If this
occurs, contact the nearest authorized Audi
dealer for assistance .

Always observe the posted speed lim its
a nd adjust your speed to suit prevailing
road, traffic and weather conditions. Neve r
drive yo ur vehicle fas ter than the maxi­
mum speed rating of the tires installed.

-Never select R or P while driving, because
this increases the risk of an accident.
- Power is still transmitted to the whee ls
when the eng ine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake in all
selector lever positions (except P) when
the engine is runn ing. Otherwise, th is in­
creases the risk of an accident.
- Do not inadvertently press the accelera­
tor pedal when the vehicle is stopped if a
gea r is engaged. Otherwise the vehicle
will star t to move immediately, even if
the parking bra ke is set . This could result
in a crash .
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position
whi le the vehicle is stationary and the
engine is running.
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running whi le in gear . If you must leave
yo ur vehicle when the engine is running,
set the park ing brake and move these ­
lector lever to the P position.
- Before opening the hood and working on
a running engine, select the P position
with the se lector lever and set the park­
ing brake. Always read and follow the ap­
plicable warnings

Q) Note
Never let the veh icle roll downhill with en­
gine off and the selector lever in the N po­
sition, because this cou ld damage the au­
tomatic transmission and cata lytic con­
verter.

Selector lever lock '
Applies to vehicles: wi th S t ronic tra nsmi ssio n
The selector lever lock prevents you from se­
lecting a gear occidentally, causing the vehi­
cle to roll.

To release the selector lever lock:

Automat ic shift loc k (AS L)
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po­
sitions when the ign ition is switched on. You
must press the brake pedal to select another
position. You must also press the interlock
button if you a re mov ing from the P position .

when the selector lever is in the P or N pos i­
t ion to remind the drive r:
When stationar y apply footbrake while se­
l e cting gear
The automatic shift lock only functions when
the vehicle is stationary or at speeds be low 1
mph (2 km/h) . At higher speeds, the lock is
automat ica lly deactivated in the N pos it ion.
The selector lever is not locked when shifting
quick ly through N, for example from R to D.
T his makes it possible to free the vehicle when
it is stuck by "rocking" it. The se lector lever
lock engages if the lever stays in the N

Make sure the wiper arms are not raised up
from the windshield. Otherwise the paint
could be damaged.

Closing the hood
• Push the hood down unti l the fo rce of the
strut is overcome .
• Then lower the hood and let it fall into the
engine hood latch -you do
not have to press
on the hood after it is locked.

If the hood is not latched complete ly, it
could fly up while you are dr iv ing and ob­
struct you r vis io n.
- For safety reasons, the hood must always
be closed secure ly wh ile d riving. Because
of this, always check the hood after clos­
ing it to make sure it is lat ched co rrectly.
When latched correc tly, the hood will be
f lush w ith the othe r body panels .
-If you no tic e th at t he hood is not latched
while you are dr iving, stop immedi ately
and close it, because this increases the
ris k of an accident .
