BRAKE/( ©) Brake system
The light illuminates when the ignition is
switched on. It goes out after the engine has
been started . Th is indicates that the brake
warn ing light is functioning properly.
If the brake warning light does not light up
when the engine is cranking , there may be a
malfunction in the electrical system. In this
case, contact your Audi dealer.
If the brake system warning/indicator light
turns on, there is a brake system malfunction .

sage appears, proceed as follows :

park ing brake, seek professiona l assistance.
- If the ind icator light and the message ap­
pear
while driving , the emergency brak ing
function may not be available . It may not be
possible to set the park ing brake or release
it once it has been set. Seek profess iona l as­
sis tance.
(USA models) : If the warn ing light. and the

ately contact your au tho rized Aud i dealer or
qualified wo rkshop to have all brake pads in­
spected

-Always observe the warnings in

and checking the brake fluid .
- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard. Stop the car and get professiona l
assistance.
- If the. (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) brake system indicator light
turns on togethe r with the ABS and ESC
indicator lights, the ABS/ESC regulating
function may have failed. Functions that
stabilize the vehicle are no longer availa­
ble. This could cause the vehicle to
swerve and increase the r isk of slid ing .
Drive carefully to the nearest authorized
Aud i dealer or other qualified workshop
and have the ma lfunction corrected.
- If the brake wa rning/ind icator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the pa rking brake is re leased, or lights up
while you are dr iving, the f lu id l eve l in
the brake fluid reservoir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed

You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with
remote control. A mechanical key is integrat­
ed in the remote control key~ page
32 .
® Emergency key
The emergency key is not intended for con­
stant use.
It should only be used in an emer­
gency. Keep it in a safe place and do not carry
it on your key ring .
Key replacement
If you lose a key, contact your authorized Audi
dealer immed iately to have the
lost key disa­
bled. Be sure to bring all your keys with you.
Personal comfort settings
If two people use one vehicle, it is recom­
mended that each person always uses "their
own" master key. When the ignition is switch­
ed off or when the vehicle is locked, personal
convenience settings for the following sys­
tems are stored and assigned to the remote
master key.
- Automatic climate control
- Central locking system
- Ambience lighting*
- Seat memory*
- Parking system*
- Adaptive cruise control*

-Audi drive select
- Night vision assistant*
- Heated steering wheel*
The stored settings are automatically recalled
when you unlock the vehicle, when you open
the doors or when you switch the ignition on.
A WARNING
-Do not leave your vehicle unattended. Al­
ways take your ignition key with you and
lock your vehicle. Entry by unauthorized
persons could endanger you or result in
theft or damage the vehicle.
- Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle, especially with access to vehicle
keys. Unguarded access to the keys pro­
vides children the opportunity to start
the engine and/or activate vehicle sys­
tems such as the power windows, etc.
Unsupervised operation of any vehicle
system by children can result in serious
injury.
(D Tips
- The operation of the remote control key
can be temporarily disrupted by interfer­
ence from transmitters in the vicinity of
the vehicle working in the same frequen­
cy range (e.g. a cell phone, radio equip­
ment).
- For security reasons, replacement keys
are only available from Audi dealers.

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

nate .
.. With the ignition sw itched on, step on the
brake pedal or the accelerator pedal and
press the sw itch C®> at the same time to re­
lease the parking brake. The ind icator lights
in the switch and. (USA models) . (Can­
ada mode ls) in the instrument cluster go
out.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­
chanica l parking brake. The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
unintentionally and replaces the hand brake.
I n addition to the normal functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake , the electromechan ical
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.
When starting from rest
-The integral starting assist helps you when
driving by automatically releasing the park­
ing brake ¢ page 78, Starting from rest .
- When starting on inclines, the starting as-

Emergency brake function
An emergency brake ensures that the veh icle
can be slowed down even if the normal brakes
fail ¢ page 78, Emergency braking.
_& WARNING
Do not press the acce lerator pedal inadver­
tently if the vehicle is stationary but the
engine is running and a gear is selected.
Otherwise the vehicle will start to move immediately and could result in a crash.
(D Tips
-If the parking brake is applied with the
ignition switched off, the indicator lights
in the switch and. (USA models)/ .
(Canada models) in the instrument clus­
ter will go out after a certain period of
time.
- Occasional noises when the parking
brake is applied and released are normal
and are not a cause for concern .
- When the vehicle is parked , the park ing
brake goes through a self-test cycle at
regular interva ls . Any associated noises
are normal.
Parking
.,. Press the brake pedal to stop the veh icle.

.,. When on inclines or declines, turn the steer­
ing wheel so that your vehicle will roll into
the curb if it begins to move .
_& WARNING
-When you leave your vehicle - even if on-
ly briefly - always take the ign it ion key
with you . This applies particularly when
children remain in the vehicle. Otherwise

lease the parking brake or operate e lec ­
trical equipment (e.g. power windows) .
The re is the risk of an accide nt.
- When the vehicle is locked, no one -par­
t icu larly not ch ildren should remain in
the vehicle . Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency wor kers to get in­
to the vehicle -putt ing lives a t risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .
Stopping and applying parking br ake
• Pull the switch(®) to apply the park ing
brake.
Starting and automat ically releasing the
parking brake
• When you start to d rive as usua l, the park­
ing brake is automatically re leased and your
vehicle begins to move .
When stopp ing at a traff ic signa l or stopp ing
i n city t raffic, t he parking brake can be ap­
plied. The veh icle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The park ing brake elimi ­
nates the tendency to c reep with a d rive ra nge
engaged. As soon as you dr ive off as usua l,
the park ing brake is released automati cally
and the veh icle star ts to move .
Starting on slopes
When starting on incl ines, the start ing ass ist
p revents the veh icle from unintentionally ro ll­
i ng ba ck. The braking force of t he pa rking
b rake i s not rele ased until sufficient dr iv ing
for ce has been b uilt up at the whee ls.
@ Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased autom ati cally only when the dr iv­
er 's sa fe ty belt i s engage d in the bu ck le.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks .
• In an emergency, pull the switc h(® ) and
con tinue to pull it to slow your ve hicle down
w ith the park ing brake.
• As soon as you release the switch (®) or ac-
c e lerate, t he b ra ki ng process stops.
If you pu ll the switch (®) and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy brak ing f unct ion is init iated . T he ve hicle is
braked at all fou r whee ls by a ctivating the hy ­
draulic brake sy stem. The br ake pe rfor mance
i s sim ilar to ma king an emergency stop~&. .
In order not to act ivate the eme rgency brak­
ing by mis take, an audib le warni ng tone (bu z­
z er) sounds whe n the swit ch(®) is pulled . As
soon as t he sw itch (®) is re leased , or the acce l­
era tor peda l is depressed, eme rgency braking
stops.
_& WARNING ,_
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l foot bra ke
has fa iled or the brake pedal is obstructed.
Using the parki ng brake to perform eme r­
gency b raking will s low your veh icle down
as if you had made a full bra ke application .
The law s of physi cs cannot be su spen ded
even wi th ESC and i ts asso ciated com po­
nents (ABS, A SR, EDL) . In corners and
when road o r weathe r con ditions are bad,
a full brake application can ca use the vehi­
cle to sk id or the rear end to break away -
risking an accident.
Speed warning system
, Introduction
The speed warning system helps you to stay
under a specified ma ximum sp eed .
The speed warn ing system warns you if you
are exceeding the maximum speed that you
have set . You will hear a warning tone when

-they are not in an upright position, for
examp le if they are s itting, crouching
or lying down and/or
- if the outline in the display is incom­
p lete or interrupted, for example be­
cause the person is partially hidden by
a parked veh icle .
(D Tips
-Pedestrian detection and the pedestrian
warming are lim ited to objects that are
detected as pedestr ians. The system
does not detect animals . Even though
the shape and warmth radiated by each
object det ected is evaluated, the system
does have lim itations and it can give in­
correct warnings.
- Fo r techn ical reasons , the image pauses
in split second i nterva ls.

activate the parking brake and move the
selector lever to P.
- Power is sti ll transmitted to the whee ls
when the engine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake when
the engine is runn ing and the selector
lever is in D/S or R or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when changing the selector lever pos ition
wh ile the vehicle is stat ionary and the
eng ine is running.
- Never shift into
R or P wh ile driving.
- Before driv ing down a steep slope, re-
duce your speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tip tronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
peda l too often or too long when dr iving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to ove rheat and s ubstant ially re­
duces braking per formance, increases
braking distance or causes comp lete fail ­
ure of the brake system.
- To prevent the veh icle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, a lways hold it
in place with the brake peda l o r parking
brake.
- Never hold the ve hicle on an incl ine with
a slipping clutch . The clutch opens auto­
matically when it becomes too hot from
the overload. An indicator lamp
ml illu­
minates and a dr iver message appears
¢ page 1O7when the clutch is overload­
ed.
- If the engine must remain running, never
hav e any driv ing pos ition engaged when
c heck ing under the hood . M ake sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and
is locke d in P with the parking brake se t
¢page 211. Otherwise, any increase in
engine speed may set the vehicle in mo­
t ion, eve n with the park ing brake ap­
plied.
Qd) Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try to hol d the vehicle in place by pressing the acce
lerator pedal while a d riving gear
is se lected. This can cause the transmis­
sion to ove rheat and can damage it. Acti­
vate the parking brake or press the brake peda l to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Allowing the vehicle to ro ll when the en­
gine is stopped and the selector lever is
in N will damage the transmission be­
cause it is not lubricated under those cir­
cumstances .
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when t he driv­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the
driver when driving down declines .
Hill descent control is activated when these­
lector lever is in D/S and you press the brake
pedal. The transmission automatically selects
a gear that is suitable fo r the incline . H ill de­
scent cont ro l tries to ma inta in the speed ach­
ieved a t the time o f braking, with in phys ica l
and tec hni cal lim it a tions. If may st ill be nec ­
essary to ad just the speed with the brakes.

On vehicles with the cru ise cont ro l system*
~ page 79, hill descent control is also activat­
ed whe n the speed is set.
A WARNING
-
Hill desce nt cont ro l cannot overcome
physical lim itations, so it may not be a ble
to maintain a constant speed unde r a ll
conditions. A lways be ready to apply the
brakes .
