86 Transmission
-Unintended vehicle movement can cause
serious injury .
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear. If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running,
activate the parking brake and move the
selector lever to P .
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake when
the engine is running and the selector
lever is in D/S or R or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position
while the vehicle is stationary and the
engine is running.
- Never shift into
R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, re-
duce your speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases
braking distance or causes complete fail­
ure of the brake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it
in place with the brake pedal or parking
brake .
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with
a slipping clutch . The clutch opens auto­
matically when it becomes too hot from
the overload . An indicator lamp

ed.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and
is locked in P with the parking brake set
Q page 195. Otherwise, any increase in
engine speed may set the vehicle in mo- tion
, even with the parking brake ap­
plied.
@ Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try
to hold the vehicle in place by pressing
the accelerator pedal while a driving gear is selected. This can cause the transmis­
sion to overheat and can damage it. Acti­
vate the parking brake or press the brake
pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling .
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the en­
gine is stopped and the selector lever is
in N will damage the transmission be­
cause it is not lubricated under those cir­
cumstances.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driv­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the
driver when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when these ­
lector lever is in D/S and you press the brake
pedal. The transmission automatically selects
a gear that is suitable for the incline. Hill de ­
scent control tries to maintain the speed ach­
ieved at the time of braking, within physical
and technical limitations. It may st ill be nec­
essary to adjust the speed with the brakes.
Hill descent control switches off once the de­
cline levels out or you press the accelerator
pedal.
On vehicles with the cruise control system*
Q page 81 , hill descent control is also activat­
ed when the speed is set.
A WARNING -
Hill descent control cannot overcome
physical limitations, so it may not be able
to maintain a constant speed under all

The parking system may be used for parking
or maneuvering.
Depending on your vehicle's equipment, vari­
ous parking aids will help you when park ing
and maneuvering.

shows the area behind the vehicle in the
d isplay. This display assists you when you are

st ickers, deposits or any other obstruc­
tions as it may impair the
sensor function.

Parking system plus
Description
Applies to vehicles: with parking system plus
Audi parking system plus provides audio and
visual signals when parking.
Sensors are located in the front and rear
bumpers. If these detect an obstacle, visual
and audible s ignals warn you. The range at
which the sensors begin to measure is approx­
imately:

side 2 ft (0 .60 m)
rear
center S.2 ft (1.60 m)
Park assist 105
The
closer you get to the obstacle, the shorter
the interva l between the audible signals. A
continuous tone sounds when the obstacle is less than approximately 1
ft (0.30 m) away.
Do not continue driving farther!
If the distance to an obstacle stays the same,
the volume of the d istance signa l chime is
gradually reduced after about
4 seconds (does
not affect the continuous signal tone).

Using the red segments, you can est ima te the
d istance to an object in front of or behind the
vehicle

er to the obstacle, the segments move closer
to the vehicle. At the latest the collision area
has been reached when the next to last seg­
ment is displayed. Do not continue driving far­
ther forward or in reverse

-The parking system cannot rep lace the
dr iver's attention. The driver is always re­
sponsible for safety d uring parking and
f or all o ther maneuvers.
- Sensors and cameras have blind spots in
wh ich peop le and objec ts cannot be de­
tected . Be especially cautious of small
children and animals .
- Always keep your eyes on the veh icle's
surroundings, using the rear view mirro r
as well.

Low obstacles al ready signa led by a warn­
ing can disappear from the system's detec­
tion range as they are approached and will
not continue to be signa led . Objects such
as barrier chains, trailer draw bars, thin
pa inted vertical poles or fences may not be
detected by the system, posing risk of
damage.

you w ith parking. For example, you can use
"parking model" when parking in a parking

The rear acoustic park ass ist system is inte­
grated in the rear of the vehicle and the rear
view camera is integrated in the rear lid

--The rear view camera has blind spots, in
which ob jects canno t be detec ted. Be es­
pec ia lly careful to che ck for small chil ­
dren and anima ls before backing up .
Sma ll children and animals will not a l­

Sensors in the bumper
Sensors are located in the front and rear
bumpers. If these detect an obstacle, audible
and visual signals warn you. The range at
which the sensors begin to measure is approx­
i mately :

Distance warning when reversing starts when
an obstacle is detected in the range of the
parking assist system. As the distance de­
creases, the time interva l between the audib le
tones becomes shorter.
When the distance is less than 1 ft (0 .30 m),
the tone becomes continuous. At this point
you should stop backing up.
If the d istance to an obstacle stays the same,
the volume of the distance signal chime is
gradually reduced after about 4 seconds (does
Park assist 107
not affect the continuous signal tone). Ap­
proaching another obstacle will cause the dis­
tance signal to sound again at the norma l vo l­
ume .
Rear view camera coverage area
The MMI display shows the area covered by
the rear view camera
c:> fig. 125 (!). Objects
that are not in the area covered @are not
shown on the MMI display .
We recommend that you practice parking with
the rear view camera in a traffic-free location
or parking lot to become familiar with the sys­
tem, the orientation lines, and their function.
When doing this, there should be good light
and weather cond itions.
In the MMI display, objects or vehicles appear
closer or further away if:
-you are driving in reverse gear from a leve l
surface onto an incline, or a downward
slope,
-you are driving in reverse gear toward pro­
trud ing ob jects,
- the vehicle is car ry in g too much load in the
rear.
The accuracy of the orientation lines and blue
surfaces diminishes if:
- the rear view camera does not provide a reli­
able image, for example, in poor visibility
conditions or if the lens is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not vis ible due to
sun glare and reflection.
Caring for the rear view camera lens
The rear view camera is located above the rear
license plate bracket. For the parking assist to
operate, the lens
c:> fig . 126 must be kept
clean:
- Dampen the lens with a household alcohol­
based glass cleaner, and clean the lens with
a dry cloth

- Remove snow with a hand brush and ice
preferably with a de-ic ing spray

edge of a street.

The following steps apply only when there is
no obstacle (such as a wall) near the parking
spot. Otherwise, please read the "Tips on Parking Next to Obstacles"¢
page 110.
.. Activate the turn signal.
.. Position your vehicle parallel to the edge of
the street, approximately 3 ft (1 m) from a parked vehicle .
.. Switch the MMI on and select the reverse
gear. The parking aid turns on and parking
mode 1 appears on the display.

Parking next to obstacles
When there is an obstacle (such as a wa ll)
next to the parking spot, choose a spot with
more space on the sides. Posit ion the long
s ide of the blue area so that there is suff ic ient
space from the curb . The area must not be on
the curb . You will a lso need to start turning
the steer ing wheel much earlier. There should
be a sufficient amount of space between the
curb and the blue curve, and the blue curve

fig. 130 must not touch the curb.
A WARNING
- The rear view camera does not show the
entire area behind the vehicle

cially for small children and anima ls. The
rear view camera cannot always detect
them, posing risk of an acc ident!
- Please note that objects not touching the
ground can appear to be further away
than they really are (for example, the
bumper of a parked vehicle, a trailer
hitch, or the rear of a truck). In this case,
you should not use the help lines to help
with parking, which poses danger of an
accident!

pending on the steering wheel angle.
The vehicle front swings out more than
the veh icle rear . Maintain plenty of dis­
tance from an obstacle so that your out­
s ide mirro r or a corner of your veh icle
does not collide with any obstacles -dan­
ger o f accident!
- Remember to ma inta in sufficie nt clear­
ance from the curb to avoid damaging
the wheel rims.

Error messages

There is an error in the system if the LED on
the
p, ,; A switch is blinki ng and you hear a con ­
tinuous alarm fo r a few seconds after switch­
ing on the park ing system or when the park­
ing system is already activated . Have yo ur au­
t h orized Aud i dea le r cor re ct the e rror.
Keep th e senso rs in the rea r bumpe r clean and
free from ice so that the acoust ic par k assist
system can fu nction properly.
@ Tips
If the error is not corrected before you
switc h off the ig nitio n, when you sw itch on
the p arking system again, the LED in the
P" JA switch will b link.

TMS can be used at temperatures down to
- 4 °F (- 20 °C).
A WARNING
Take the following precautions after re ­
pairing the tire:
- Do not drive faster than 50 mph (80 km/
h)!
- Avoid fu ll-throttle acce leration, heavy
braking and fast cornering.
- The vehicle's road behavior can be affect ­
ed.
- Tires sealed w ith
TMS are intended only
for
temporary, short-te rm u se . Dam­
aged tires must be replaced . Drive care­
fully to the next profess iona l repa ir fa ­
c ility.
- After using the t ire sea lant the tire pres­
sure monitoring system may no longer
work properly. Drive carefully to the next
professional repair fac ility.
- TMS must NOT be used,
- for cuts or punctures in the ti re whi ch
a re l arger tha n 0.16 inch (4 mm)
- for damage to the rim
- if you have been dr iv ing with very low
tire pressures o r ti res with no air
- Seek p rofess ional assistance if it is not
poss ible to repair the tire with the tire
sealant.
- The tire sealant must not come into con­ tact with sk in, eyes or clothing.
- If you get any tire sealant in your eyes or
come into contact with it, r inse the af­
fected a rea t horoughly with cl ean water.
