In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
cr itical for a lane change even if it is still
somewhat far away. The faster a vehicle ap­
p roaches, the sooner the display in the exteri­
or m irror will t urn on.
@ V ehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling w ith you are indicated in the
exterior m irror if they are classified as cr itical
for a lane change. All vehicles detec ted by
side assist are indicated by the time they en­
ter your "blind spot", at the latest.

© Vehicle s left behind
If you s low ly pass a vehi cle that s ide assist has
detected (the difference in speed between the
vehicle and you r vehicle is less than 9 mph or
15 km/h), the display in the exterior mirror
turns on as soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
The disp lay will not t urn on if you quickly pass
a vehicle that side assist has detected (the dif­
ference in speed between the vehicle and your
vehicle is greater than 9 mph or 15 km/h).
Functi onal limitation s
The radar sensors are designed to detect the
left and right adjacent lanes when the road
lanes are the normal width. In certain situa­
tions, the d isp lay in the exterior mirror may
turn on even though there is no veh icle locat­
ed in the area that is cr itical for a lane change.
For example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are dr iving
on the edge of your lane.
If this is the case,
the system may have detected the vehicle in
another lane that is
not adjacent to your
current lane .
- if you a re driving through a curve. Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane ove r
from the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or d isp laced guard rails) .
- In poor weather conditions. The side assist
functions are l imited .
Do not cover the radar sensors
c> fig. 103 with
stickers, depos its, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this will affect the funct ion. Do
not use s ide ass ist when towing a trailer. For
i nformation on cleaning, refer to
c> page 209 .

-Always pay attention to traffic and to t he
area around your ve hicl e. S ide assist can­
not replace a driver's attention. The driv­
er a lone is always responsible for lane
changes and similar driving mane uvers.

-Improper reliance on the side assist sys­
tem can cause collisions and serious
personal injury:
- Never rely only on side assist when
changing lanes.
- Always check rear view mirrors to make
sure that it is safe to change lanes.
- Side assist cannot detect all vehicles un­
der all conditions- danger of accident!
- Please note that side assist indicates
there are approaching vehicles, or
vehicles in your blind spot, only after
your vehicle has reached a driving speed
of at least 19 mph (30 km/h).
- In certain situations, the system may not
function or its function may be limited.
For example:
- if vehicles are approaching or being left
behind very quickly . The display may
not turn on in time.
- in poor weather conditions such as
heavy rain, snow or heavy mist .
- on very wide lanes, in tight curves or if
there is a rise in the road surface.
Vehicles in the adjacent lane may not be detected because they are outside
of the sensor range.
(D Note
The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and
underbody. This can affect the system.
Have your authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility check their
function.
@ Tips
- If the window glass in the driver's door
or front passenger's door has been tint­ ed, the display in the exterior mirror may
be misinterpreted.

Activating and deactivating

Adjusting the display brightness
Applies to vehicles: wit h side assist
The brightness setting can be adjusted via the
MMI.
.. Select: !CAR I function button> (Car)* sys­
tems control button > Driver assist > Audi
side assist .
The display brightness adjusts automatically
to the brightness of the surroundings, both in
the information and in the warning stage. In
very dark or very bright surroundings, the dis ­
play is already set to the minimum or maxi­
mum level by the automatic adjustment . In
such cases, you may notice no change when
adjusting the brightness, or the change may
only be noticeable once the surroundings
change.
Adjust the brightness to a level where the dis­
play in the information stage will not disrupt
your view forward. If you change the bright­
ness, the display in the exterior mirror will
briefly show the brightness level in the infor­
mation stage. The brightness of the warning
stage is linked to the brightness in the infor­ mation stage and is adjusted along with the
information stage adjustment .

Driver messages
Applies to vehicles: with side assist
If side assist switches off by itself, the LED in
the button turns off and a message will ap­
pear in the instrument cluster display:
Audi side assist: Currently unavailable. No
sensor vision
The radar sensors' vision is affected. Do not
cover the area in front of the sensors with bike
wheels, stickers, dirt or other objects. Clean
the area in front of the sensors, if necessary
c>page97, fig.103.
Audi side assist: Currently unavailable
Side assist cannot be switched on temporarily
because there is a malfunction (for example,
the battery charge level may be too low).
Audi side assist: System fault!
The system cannot guarantee that it will de ­
tect vehicles correctly and it is switched off .
The sensors have been displaced or are faulty.
Have the system checked by an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility
soon.
Audi side assist: Unavailable when towing.
Side assist switches off automatically when a
factory-installed trailer hitch is connected to
the electrical connector on the trailer. There is
no guarantee the system will switch off when
using a retrofitted trailer hitch. Do not use
side assist when towing a trailer.

"N ight v is ion assistant with pedestrian detec­
tion" uses an infrared camera to monitor the
area in front of your vehicle at night. Within
the limits of the system , it can display objects
up to about 1000 feet (300 meters) away. The
heat image of a pedestrian detected by the
camera is shown in the instrument cluster dis­
play

that are between about 50 and 300 feet (15
and 90 meters) in front of the vehicle, under
ideal conditions .

Hill descent control switches off once the de­
cline levels out or you press the accelerator pedal.
On vehicles with the cruise control system*
¢ page 82, hill descent control is also activat­
ed when the speed is set.
A WARNING
Hill descent control cannot overcome
physical limitations, so it may not be able
to maintain a constant speed under all
conditions. Always be ready to apply the
brakes .
Manual shift program
Using the manual shift program you can
manually select gears.

lector lever is in 0/S or the tiptronic manual

The transm ission only allows manual sh ifting
when the engine speed is with in the permit­
ted range.

- When you shift into the next lower gear,
the transmission will downshift only
when there is no possibility of over-rev­
ving the engine.
- When the kick-down comes on, the
transmission will shift down to a lower
gear, depending on vehicle and engine
speeds.
- Tiptronic is inoperative when the trans ­
mission is in the fai l-safe mode.
, Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration.
Applies to vehicles with a multitronic
transmission
When you depress the accelerator pedal be­
yond the resistance point, the transmission
downshifts into a lower gear ratio depend ing
on the vehicle speed and engine speed. As .,.

long as the accelerator peda l is depressed, the
engine speed is automatica lly regulated for
maximum acceleration.

tip tronic t ransmis sion
When you depress the acce lerator pedal be­
yond the resistance point, the automatic transmission downshifts into a lower gear, de­
pending on vehicle speed and engine speed.
The upshift into the next higher gear takes
place once the maximum specified eng ine
speed is reached.
A WARNING
Please note that the d rive wheels can spin
if kick-down is used on a smooth slippery
road - there is a risk of skidding .
Launch Control Program
Applies to vehicles: with 5 tronic
The Launch Control Program provides the
best acceleration possible when starting from
a stop .
Requirement: The engine must be at operat­
i ng temperature and the steering wheel must
not be tu rned.

when sport mode is switched on, espe­
cially when the road is slippe ry.
- Once you have accelerated, you shou ld
sw itch sport mode off by pressing the
I J'J OFF I button.

-The tra nsmission temperature may in­
crease significantly after using the
Launch Control P rogram. If that hap­
pens, the p rogram may not be avai lab le
for a few minutes . It w ill be ava ilable
again after a cool-down period .
- When accelerating using the La unch
Contro l Program, a ll vehicle parts are
subject to heavy loads. This can result in
increased wear.

The rear view ca m era shows the area behind
the vehicle in the Infotainment d isp lay. This

ing and maneuvering. You are aided by var ious
cameras depending on the vehicle equipment leve l

A WARNING
- Always look for traff ic and check the area
around your vehicle by looking at it di­
rectly as well . The parking system cannot
rep lace the d river's attent ion. The dr iver
is always respons ible for safety during
p arki ng and for all other maneuvers.
- Please note that some surfaces, such as
clothing, a re not detected by the system.
- Senso rs and cameras have blind spots in
wh ich peop le and objects ca nnot be de­
te cted. Be especially cau tious of children
and animals.
- T he sensors can be displaced by impacts
or damage to the radia to r grille, bumpe r,
wheel housing and the unde rbody. The
par king systems may become impaired
as a resu lt . Have your authorized Audi
dealer or qualified workshop check their
function. -
Make s ure the sensors are not covered by
stickers, deposits or any other obstruc­
tions as it may impair the sensor func­
tion . For information on cleaning, refer

- Some objects are not detected by the system under certain c ircumstances:
- Obje cts su ch as ba rrie r chains, trailer
draw bars, vertical po les or fences
- Objects above t he senso rs such as wall
extensions
- Objects w ith specific surfaces or struc­
tures su ch as chain link fences or pow­
der snow.
- If you conti nue d riving closer to a low- ly­
ing object, it may disappea r from the
sensor range. Note th at yo u w ill no lon­
ger be warned abo ut this obstacle.

- certain road surfaces or for long grass.
