A WARNING ,~ -
Improperly installed child safety seats in­
crease the risk of serious personal injury and
death in a collision.
- Always make sure that the safety belt re­
tractor is locked when installing a child safe­
ty seat . An unlocked safety belt retractor
cannot hold the child safety seat in place
during normal driving or in a crash.
- Always buckle the child safety seat firmly in
place even if a child is not sitting in it. A
loose child safety seat can fly around during
a sudden stop or in a collision.
- If the backrest is not securely latched, the
child and the child restraint will be thrown
forward together with the backrest and will
strike parts of the vehicle interior. The child
can be seriously injured or killed.
- Never install rearward-facing child safety seats or infant carriers on the front passen­
ger seat . A child will be seriously injured and
can be killed when the passenger airbag in­
flates.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child safety seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child
against the backrest, center armrest, door
or roof.
- Always install rearward-facing child safety
seats or infant carriers on the rear seat.
- Forward-facing child safety seats or infant
carriers installed on the front passenger's
seat may interfere with the deployment of
the airbag and cause serious injury to the
child.
- It is safer to install a forward-facing child
safety seat on the rear seat.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS when­
ever using a child restrained in a vehicle is
being used

Child safety
A WARNING
Always take special precautions if you must
install a forward or rearward-facing child re­
straint on the front passenger's seat in excep­
tional situations:
- Whenever a forward or rearward -facing
child restraint is installed on the front pas­
senger seat, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light must come on and stay on whenever
the ignition is switched on.
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does
not come on and stay on, perform the
checks described
r=;, page 139, Monitoring
the Advanced Airbag System.
- Take the child restraint off the front passen­
ger seat and install it properly at one of the
rear seat positions if the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
light does not stay on whenever
the ignition is switched on.
- Improper installation of child restraints can
reduce their effectiveness or even prevent
them from providing any protection.
- An improperly installed child restraint can
interfere with the airbag as it deploys and
seriously injure or even kill the child .
- Always carefully follow the manufacturer's
instructions provided with the child safety
seat or carrier.
- Never place additional items on the seat
that can increase the total weight registered
by the weight-sensing mat and can cause in­
jury in a crash .
A WARNING
-Forward-facing child restraints:
- Always make sure the forward-facing seat
has been designed and certified by its man ­
ufacturer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and side airbag.
- Never put the forward-facing child restraint up, against or very near the instrument pan­
el.
-Always move the passenger seat into its
rearmost position in the seat's fore and aft

adjustment range, as far away from the air­
bag as possib le before installing the for­
ward-fac ing ch ild restraint. The backrest
must be adjusted to an upright posit ion.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the t ime
whenever the ignition is switched on.
A WARNING
Rearward-fac ing ch ild restra ints:
- A ch ild in a rearward-facing child safety seat
installed on the front passenger seat will be
seriously injured and can be k illed if the
front a irbag inflates - even with an Ad­
vanced Airbag System.
- The inflating a irbag w ill hit the child safety
seat or infant car rier with great force and
will smash the chi ld safety seat and child
against the bac krest, center armrest, door
or roof .
- Always be espe cially caref ul if you must in­
sta ll a rearward facing chi ld safety seat on
the front passenger seat in exceptiona l cir ­
cumstances .
- A tight tether strap on a rearward-facing
child restraint attached to the front passen­
ger seat can put too much pressure on the
weight-mat in the seat and register a heavi­ er we ight in the Advanced Airbag System.
The heav ier weight reg istered can make the
system work as though an adult were on the
seat and deploy the Advanced Airbag when it m ust be s uppressed causing ser ious o r
even fatal injury to the child.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and s tays on all the t ime
whenever the ignition is switched on.
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does
not come on and stay on, immed iate ly in­
sta ll the rearward-fac ing ch ild safety sea t in
a rear seating posit ion and have the airbag
system inspected by your authorized Audi
dealer .

· Activating the convertible locking retractor
Use the convertible locking retractor to secure a
child restraint.
Always heed the child safety seat manufacturer's
i nstruct ions when installing a child restraint in
your vehicle . T o activate the convert ible locking
retractor:
.. Place the child restraint on a seat, preferably on
the rear seat .
.. Slowly pull the belt
all th e wa y out .
.. Route it around or through the child restraint
belt pat h

.. Push the ch ild safety seat down with your full
weigh t to get the sa fety belt really tight.
.. Insert the belt tongue into the b uckle for that
seating position .
.. Guide the safety be lt back into the retractor un­
til the belt lies flat and snug on the ch ild safety
seat.
.. You should hear a "clicking" noise as the belt
w inds back into the inertia reel. Test the con­
vert ible lock ing retractor by pu lling on the belt .
You should no longer be able to pull the belt
out of the ret ractor. The conve rtible locking re­
tractor is now ac tivated .
.. Make s ure that the red release button is fac ing
away from the child restraint so that it can be
unbuckled quickly .
.. Pull on the belt to make sure the safety be lt is
properly tight and fastened so that the seat
cannot move forward or s ideways more than
one inch (2 .5 cm).
A WARNING
Using the wrong child restraint or an improp­
e rly installed child restraint can cause serious
personal injury or death in a crash.
- Always ma ke sure that the safe ty be lt re­
tracto r is loc ked when insta lling a child sa fe­
ty seat. An unlocked sa fety belt retractor
cannot ho ld the child safety seat in place
during normal driving or in a crash.
- Always buckle the child safety seat firmly in place even if a chi ld is not sitting in it. A

right position and securely latched into

Deactivating the convertible locking
retractor
The convertible locking retractor for child re­
straints will be deactivated automatically when
the belt is wound all the way back in to the re­
tractor .
~ Press the red button on the safety belt buck le.
The belt tongue will pop out of the buckle.
~ Guide the safety belt all the way back into its
stowed position .
Always let the safety belt retract comp lete ly into
its stowed position . The safety be lt can now be
used as an ordinary safety belt without the con­
ve rtible locking retrac to r fo r child restra ints .
If the convert ible locking retractor shou ld be ac­
tivated inadvertently, the safety belt must be un­
fastened and gu ided completely back into its
stowed position to deact ivate this feature .
If the
convert ible lock ing retractor is not deactivated,
the safety belt w ill gradua lly become tighter and
uncomfo rt a ble to wear .

Child Restraint System anchors and how
are they related to child safety
To provide a s imp ler a nd more pract icable way to
attach the child res traint on the vehicle seat, Fed ­
e ra l regulations require specia l lower anchorages
in veh icles and devices on new child restra ints to
attach to the ve hicle anchorages.
The combination of the tet her anchorages and
the lower anchorages is now generally called the
LATCH system fo r "Lower Anchorages and
T ethers fo r Children ."
Forwa rd-facing child rest raints manufactured af ­
ter September 1 , 1999, are required by U .S. fed­
era l reg ulations to comply w ith new child head
movement perfo rmance requiremen ts . These
new performance requirem ents make a tether
necessary on most new child seats.
I nstalling a child restraint that requ ires a top
tether w ithout one ca n serio usly impair the per ­
formance of the chi ld restra int and its ability to
protect the child in a col lision. Insta lling a ch ild
restraint that requires a top tether without the
t op tether may be a violation o f sta te law.
Chi ld restraint manufact urers offer LATCH lower
anchorages on the ir child seats with hook-on or
push-on connectors attached to adjustable
straps.
In addition to the LATCH lower anchorages, these
child restraint systems usua lly require the use of
tethe r straps to help keep the child res traint
f irm ly in place.

- Never install a child restraint without a

- Never secure or attach any luggage or other
item to the LATCH lower anchorages.

In Canada, the terms "top tether" with " lowe r
universa l anchorages" (or "lower universa l an­
chorage bars") are used to describe the sys­
tem.
- In other countries, the term "ISOFIX" is used to describe the lower anc horages.

Lower anchorages secure the child restraint in
the seat without using the vehicle's safety belts.
Anchorages provide a secure and easy-to -use at ­
tachment and minim ize the possibility of improp­
er ch ild restrai nt installat ion.
All ch ild restra ints manufactured after Septem­
ber 1, 2002, must have lower anchorage attach ­
ments for the
LATCH system .
Remember that the lower anchorage points are
only intended for installation and attachment of
child restraints spec ifically cert ified for use with
LATCH lower anchorages . Child restraints that are
not equipped with the lower ancho rage attach-

using vehicle safety be lts .

manufacturer's instructions.
Releasing
• Loosen the tension on the straps following the
child restraint manufacturer's instructions.
• Depress the spring catches to release the an­
chorage hooks from the lower anchorages.
Remember: Use tether straps to help keep the
child restraint firmly in place.

- These anchors were developed only for child
safety seats using the "LATCH" system.
- Never attach other child safety seats, belts or other objects to these anchors.
- Always make sure that you hear a click when
latching the seat in place. If you do not hear
a click the seat is not secure and could fly
forward and hit the interior of the vehicle,
or be ejected from the vehicle.

The tether anchors for the rear seating positions
are located in recesses in the rear window shelf
¢fig. 151.
A tether is a straight or V-shaped strap that at­
taches the top part of a child restraint to special
anchorage points in the vehicle .
The purpose of the tether is to reduce the for­
ward movement of the child restraint in a crash,
in order to help reduce the risk of head injury that
could be caused by striking the vehicle interior.
Forward facing child restraints manufactured af­
ter September 1, 1999, are required by U.S. fed­
eral regulations to comply with child head move­
ment performance requirements. These new per­
formance requirements make a tether necessary
on most new child safety seats.

- Always follow the instructions provided by
the manufacturer of the child restraint you
intend to install in your Audi.
- Improper use of child restraint anchors (in­
cluding tether anchors) can lead to injury in
a collision . The anchors are designed to
withstand only those loads imposed by cor­
rectly fitted child restraints.
- Never mount two child restraint systems on
one LATCH lower anchor point.
- Never attach two child restraint systems to
one tether strap or tether anchorage .

-Never attach a tether strap to a tie-down
hook in the luggage compartment.
- Never use child restraint tether anchorages
to secure safety belts or other kinds of occu­
pant restraints.
- Never secure or attach any l uggage or other
items to the LATCH lower anchorages or to
the tether anchors.
- If a tether or other strap is used to attach a
child restraint to the front passenger seat,
make sure that it is not so tight, that it
causes the we ight-sensing mat to measure
more we ight than is actually on the seat .
- The heav ier weight reg istered ca n make the
Advanced Airbag System work as though an
adult were on the seat and deploy the Ad­
vanced Airbag whe n it must be supp ressed
ca using se rious or even fatal injur y to the
c h ild.
- If you mu st install a rearwar d faci ng chi ld

Cur rently, few rea rward-faci ng chi ld restraint sys­
tems come wit h a teth er. Please read and heed
the ch ild restraint system manufacturer's ins truc­
tions carefully to determine how to properly in ­
stall the tether .

A child in a rearward-facing ch ild safety seat

In extreme cases, EDL a utomatica lly switches off
to help keep the brake on the braked whee l from
overheating. EDL w ill switch on again automati ­
cally when conditions have returned to normal.
Steering re commendat ion
The ESC helps to stabilize the ve hicle by chang ing
the steering torque.
I n vehicles with dynamic steeri ng*, ESC also
h e lps to stabilize the steering in critical s itua­
tions .
Electronic interaxle differential lock* /
sel ectiv e wheel torque control*
The electron ic in teraxle d iffe ren tial lock (front
wheel drive) or the selective wheel torq ue contro l
(all wheel drive) operates when driving through
curves. The front whee l on the ins ide of the cu rve
or both whee ls on the inside of the curve are
braked selectively as needed. Thi s allows more
precise driving in curves. The applicable system
may not activate when driving in wet or snowy
conditions .
_&, WARNING
- The ESC and its integrated systems cannot
overcome the laws of physics. This is espe­
ci al ly impo rtant on slippe ry or wet roads. If
the sys tems begin acting to stabilize your

veh icle, you shou ld immediately change
your speed to matc h the road and traffic
conditions. Do not let the increased safety
provided by these systems tempt you to
take risks . Do ing so will increase the risk of a
loss of vehicle control, collision and serious
personal injuries.
- Always adapt your speed to road, traffic and
weather conditions. The risk of losing con­
trol of the vehicle inc reases when dr iving
too fast, espec ially through curves and on
slippery or wet roads, and when dr iving too
close to vehicles up ahead . The ESC and its
integrated systems cannot a lways prevent
coll isions -there is sti ll a risk of accidents!
- Always accelerate with special care on even,
smooth su rfaces such as those that are wet
or covered with ice and snow. The drive
wheels can spin even with these assistance
systems that can not always help to reduce
the risk of loss of vehicle cont rol.
{!) Tips
-ABS and ASR only work correct ly when a ll
four wheels are equipped w ith ident ica l
tires. Different tire sizes can lead to a reduc­
tion in engine power.
- You may hear noises when the systems de­
scribed are working.
ESC turns on automatically when you start the engine.
