Gearshift Indicator
Applies to vehicles: with manual transmission and gearsh ift
indicator
This indicator con help conserve fuel.

In order to become familiar with the gearshift in­
d ictor, at first just drive the way you are used to .
If the current gear -and the dr iving situation -is
not the best one for conserving fuel , then the in­
dicator wi ll display the recommended gear . The
d isp lay shows the cu rrent gear and the gear that
is recommended

-Up shifting The display will light up to the r ight
of the gear currently se lected if it is recom­
mend ing a h igher gear .
-Dow nshifting : The display will light up to the
left of the gear currently se lected if it is recom­
mend ing a lower gear.
Sometimes the indicator w ill recommend sk ip­
p ing a gear (3
> 5) .
If there is no gearshift recommendation, then
just drive in the appropriate gear for conserving fuel.

This indicator can help you conserve fue l. This
i ndicator is not meant to show you which gear
you should always be in in all driving situa­
tions. Sometimes, in situations such as pass­
i ng, driving through mounta ins or when tow­
ing a trailer, there won't be any gearshift rec­

T he efficiency program can help you to use less
fuel. It eval uates driving information in reference
to fuel consumpt ion and shows other equ ipment
i nfluencing consumption as well as shift recom­
mendat ions . Fuel economy messages
¢ page 28 provide tips for efficient dr iv ing .
The efficiency program uses distance and con­ sumption data from trip computer

The eff ic iency program also has an enhanced
shift indicator. This enhanced shift indicator fol­
lows the same concept as the "standard" shift in­
dicator¢
page 26. The se lected and the recom­
mended gears are highlighted in colors like a
traffic light.
The color of the circle indicates if the most suita­ b le gear is engaged or if you should shift up or
down.

mend the correct gear in all driving situations.
Only the drive r can decide which gear is cor­
rect in certain dr iving situations such as when
passing another vehicle, driving on hills or
towing a trailer.

ferent in vehicles with a monochrome dis­

A scale @also shows the current total consump­
tion of all other equipment.

cl e. Locked doors make it more difficult for
emergency wor kers to get into the vehicle -
putt ing lives at risk.

The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .

.. When you sta rt to drive as usual, the parking
bra ke is automatically released and yo ur vehicle
beg ins to move.
When stop ping at a traffic signal or stopping in
c ity t raffic on vehicles with an a utomat ic t rans ­
mission, the parking brake can be app lied. The
vehicle does not have to be he ld with the foot­
brake. The pa rking brake eliminates the tendency
to c reep with a d rive ra nge engaged. As soon as
yo u drive off as usua l, the park ing b rake is re­
l eased a utomat ica lly and the vehi cle starts to
m ove .
Starting on slopes
When sta rting on inclines, the starting assist pre ­
ven ts the vehicle from unintentionally ro lling
bac k. The braking force of the parking b rake is
n ot released until suff icient dr iving force has
been built up at the wheels.

For safety reasons, the pa rking bra ke is re­
l eased a utoma tically on ly w hen t he d river's
s a fety be lt is en gaged in t he b uckle.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unin tentionally on an in­
cline, do the f ollowing:

Depend ing on the weight of the rig (vehi cle an d
t ra ile r) and the seve rity of the incline, yo u may
r o ll backwards as yo u start. You can p revent roll­
i ng backwards by holding the parking brake
switch @pulled o ut and acce lerating -just as
you would when starting on a hill wi th a conven­
tiona l hand b rake .

Side assis t helps you monitor your blind spot and
traffic behind your vehicle . Within the limits of
the system , it warns you about vehicles that are
coming closer or that are traveling with you with­
in sensor range(!)

The display in the left exterior mirror provides as­
sistance when mak ing a lane change to the left,

detected and classified as critica l. The display in
the respective mirror turns on, but is dim.

@ Vehicles that are approaching
In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
critical for a lane change even if it is still some­
what far away. The faster a vehicle approaches, the sooner the display in the exterior mirror will
turn on.
@ Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling with you are indicated in the
exterior mirror if they are classified as critical for
a lane change. All vehicles detected by side assist
Audi side assist
are indicated by the time they enter your "blind
spot", at the latest.
© Vehicles left behind
If you slowly pass a vehicle that side assist has
detected (the difference in speed between the ve­
hicle and your vehicle is less than 9 mph (15 km/
h)), the display in the exterior mirror turns on as
soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
The display will not turn on if you quickly pass a
vehicle that side assist has detected (the differ­
ence in speed between the vehicle and your vehi­
cle is greater than 9 mph (15 km/h)).
Functional limitations
The radar sensors are designed to detect the left
and right adjacent lanes when the road lanes are
the normal width. In certain situations, the dis­
play in the exterior mirror may turn on even
though there is no vehicle located in the area that is critical for a lane change. For example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are driving on
the edge of your lane. If this is the case, the
system may have detected the vehicle in anoth­
er lane that is
not adjacent to your current lane.
- if you are driving through a curve. Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane over from
the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or displaced guard rails).
- In poor weather conditions. The side assist
functions are limited.
Do not cover the rada r senso rs¢
fig. 107 with
stickers, deposits, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this will affect the function. Do not
u se side assist when towing a trailer. For infor­
mation on cleaning, refer to¢
page 184.
A WARNING
-Always pay attention to traffic and to the
area around your vehicle . Side assist cannot
replace a driver's attention. The driver alone
is always responsible for lane changes and
similar driving maneuvers.

- Sensors have dead spaces in which objects
cannot be detected. Be especia lly alert for
small chi ldren and animals, s ince they are
not always detected by the sensors .
- The acoustic parking system is not a substi­
tute for the dr iver's own caution and alert­
ness. Ultimate respons ibility always remains
with the driver during parking and sim ila r
maneuvers. A lways watc h where yo u are
dr iv ing .
- You should always adjust the vo lume and
frequency of the warning tones so that yo u
can eas ily hea r the acoust ic distance wa rn­
ing even if the radio is playing, the air-co ndi­
ti oner blower is on High or there is a high
level of o utsid e noise.
- Chec k the settings w henever anyone e lse
has driven t he veh icle befo re you.

- Remember t hat low o bstacles for wh ich a
warning has already been issued may "dive"
below the system 's sens ing zone if the vehi­
