er .
Shift lever position!
Vehicles with an automat ic transmission: the
driver message appears if the selecto r lever is
shifted to the N position. Th e adaptive cruise
control is no t available while in this position.
Vehicles with manua l transm ission: the driver
message appears for vehicles with manual
transmission if there is no forward gear en
gaged, meaning if the reverse gear or the 1st
gear is engaged or if the selector leve r is in
the neutral position . The adaptive cr uise con
trol is not available while in th is position.
Stabilization control (ESC)
This message appears if the electronic stabili
z ation control ( ESC) is taking action to stab i
lize the vehicle. The adaptive cruise contro l
turns off. A chime sounds as a reminder .
Speed too low
This message appears if the current speed is
too low
to set or to maintain the desired
speed .
The speed be ing saved must be at least
20 mph (30 km/h). The cruise control is
turned off for speeds lower than 12 mph

Drive select provides the possibility to experi
ence diffe rent types of vehicle sett ings in one
vehicle. For instance, using the three
Com
fort, Auto and Dynamic modes, the driver can
switch from a sporty to a comfortab le driving
mode with the press of a button.
Addit ionally, in vehicles with
MM I*, the vehi
cle setup for
Individual* mode can be cus
tomized by you. This makes it possib le to
combine settings such as a sporty engine tun
ing with comfortable steering.
A WARNING
Improper use of the Audi drive select can
cause collisions, other acc idents and seri

Description
Applies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the vehicle's features . However, the engine,
automatic t ransmission* and steering are al
ways involved.

Engine and automatic transmission*
Depending on the mode, the engine and the
automatic transmission respond quicker or in
a more ba lanced manner to acce lerator pedal
movements. In the sporty dynamic mode, the
automatic transmission shifts at higher RPMs .
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering effort
and steering ratios . Indirect steer ing that
moves easily, like the steering in comfort
mode , is best su ited to long dr ives on a high
way. In contrast, dynamic mode prov ides
~ sporty, di rect steering.

steering effort for the driver at all times. This
sets the steering to be less sensitive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle
control. At reduced speeds, however, steering
is more direct in order to keep the steering ef
fort as minimal as possible when the driver is
maneuveri ng the veh icle . At low and average
speeds, dynamic steering addit iona lly pro
vides more responsive steering performance.
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use sensors to record
information regarding steering movements,
braking and acceleration operations by the
driver , road surface, driving speed, and load.
T his makes it possible to adapt damp ing to
the driving situation v irtually i n rea l time.
Drive select also makes it possible to satisfy
the desire for sporty suspension (Dynamic)
and comfortab le suspension (Comfort) with
out giving up balanced tuning (Auto) .
Sport differential*
As a component of the all whee l dr ive system
(quattro)

distributes the driving power to the rear axle
depending on the situation . The distribution
of power varies depending on the mode se lected. The goal is a high level of agility and
ability to accelerate on curves . The vehicle is
very respons ive to steering .
Audi adaptive cruise control*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjust
ed from comfortab le to sporty, depending on
the drive select mode. Adaptive cruise control
also responds to the driving behavior of the
vehicle ahead in a more conservative or sporty
manner .
Engine sound*
The sound of the engine is adapted to the se
lected mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.

Why safety belts?
Frontal collisions and the law of physics
Frontal crashes create very strong forces for
people riding in vehicles .

The physical principles are simple. Both the
vehicle and the passengers possess energy
which varies with vehicle speed and body
weight . Engineers call this energy "kinetic en
ergy ."
The higher the speed of the vehicle and the greater the vehicle's weight, the more energy
that has to be "absorbed" in the crash .
Vehicle speed is the most significant factor . If
the speed doubles from 15 to 30 mph (25 to
50 km/h) , the energy increases 4 times!
Because the passengers of this vehicle are not
using safety belts
r::;, fig. 143, they will keep
moving at the same speed the vehicle was
moving just before the crash, until something
stops them -here, the wall

The same principles apply to people sitting in
a vehicle that is involved in a frontal collision .
Even at city speeds of 20 to 30 mph (30 to
50 km/h) , the forces acting on the body can Safety belts

reach one ton (2,000 lbs. or 1,000 kg) or
more . At greater speeds, these forces are
even
higher.
People who do not use safety belts are also
not attached to their vehicle. In a frontal colli
sion they will also keep moving forward at the
speed their vehicle was travelling just before
the crash. Of course, the laws of physics don't
just apply to frontal collisions, they determine what happens in all kinds of accidents and col
lisions .
What happens to occupants not wearing
safety belts?
In crashes unbelted occupants cannot stop
themselves from flying forward and being in
jured or killed. Always wear your safety belts!

Unbelted occupants are not able to resist the
tremendous forces of impact by holding tight
or bracing themselves . Without the benefit of
safety restraint systems, the unrestrained oc
cupant will slam violently into the steer ing
wheel, instrument panel, windshield, or what
ever else is in the way ¢ fig. 145 . This impact Ill-

with the vehicle interior has all the energy
they had just before the crash.
Neve r rely on airbags a lone for p rotec tion.
Even when they deploy, airbags provide only
addit io nal p rotection . Airbags are not sup
posed to deploy in all kinds of accidents. Al
though your Audi is equipped with a irbags, all
vehicle occupants, including the driver, must
wear safety belts correctly in order to min i
mize the risk of severe injury or death in a
crash .
Remember too, that airbags wi ll deploy on ly
once and that your safety belts are always
there to offer protection in those accidents in
which airbags are not supposed to deploy or when they have a lready deployed . Unbelted
occupants can also be thrown out of the vehi
cle whe re even more severe o r fatal in juries
can occu r.
It is also impo rtant for the rear passenge rs to
wear safety belts correctly. Unbelted passen
gers in the re ar seats end anger no t on ly them
selves but a lso the d river a nd other passen
gers ~

Safety belts protect
People think it's possible to use the hands to
brace the body in a minor collision. It's simply
not true!

Safety belts used properly can make a big dif
ference . Safety be lts he lp to keep passengers
in their seats, gradually reduce energy levels applied to the body in an accident, and help
prevent the
uncontrolled movement that can
ca use serio us in juries . In addition, safety be lts
reduce the danger of being thrown out of the
vehicle .
Safety be lts attach passengers to the car and
give them the benefit of being slowed down
more gently or "softly" through the "give" in
the safety belts, crush zones and other safety
features engineered into today's vehicles. By
"abso rbing" t he kinetic energy over a longer
per iod of t ime, the safety belts make the
forces o n the body more " tolerable" and less
l ikely to ca u se inju ry.
Although these examples are based on a fron
ta l co llision, saf ety belts can a lso substantia l
ly red uce the r isk of injury in other kinds of
cr ashes. So, whether you're on a long t rip o r
j u st going to the corner store, a lways buckle
u p and make sure others do, too. Accident sta
tistics show that veh icle occupants properly
wearing safety belts have a lower risk of be ing
injured and a much better chance of surviving
an accident. Properly using safety be lts also
greatly increases the ability of the supplemen
tal airbags to do the ir job i n a collision. Fo r
t hi s reason, wea ring a safety belt is legally re
quired in mos t countr ies includi ng mu ch of
t h e Un ited States and C anada .
Althoug h your Aud i is equipped with a irbags,
you still have to wear the safety be lts prov id
ed . F ront ai rbags, fo r example , a re ac tivated
o nly in some front al coll isions. The fron t air
bags are not act ivated in a ll fron tal collis ions,
in side and rear co llisions, in roll overs or in
cases where there is not eno ugh deceleration
through impact to the front o f the veh icle.
The same goes for the other a irbag systems in
your Audi. So, always wear your safety belt and make su re everybody in your veh icle is
properly restrai ned !

Data Recorder and
vehicle control modules
E ve nt Dat a Recorder
This vehicle is equipped with an Event Data
Recorder (EDR) . The main purpose of an EDR
is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like
situations, such as an airbag deployment or h itting a road obstacle, data that will ass ist in
understand ing how a veh icle's systems per
formed. The EDR is designed to record data
re lated to vehicle dynamics and safety sys
tems for a short period of time, typically
30 seconds or less. The EDR in this vehicle is
designed to record such data as:
- How various systems in you r vehicle were
operating;
- Whether or not the d river a nd passenger
safety belts were buckled/fastened;
- How far ( if at all) the dr iver was dep ress ing
the accelerator and/or brake peda l; and,
- How fast the ve hicle was traveling.
These data can help provide a better under
stand ing of the c ircumstances in which crash
es and injuries occur . NOTE : EDR data a re re
corded by your veh icle only if a non-trivial
crash sit uat ion occ urs; no data are recorded by
the EDR under normal driving cond itions and
no personal data (e.g., name, gender, age,
and crash location) are recorded. However,
other parties, such as law enforcement, co uld
comb ine the EDR data with the type of per
sonally identify ing data routinely acquired
during a crash invest igation .
To read data recorded by an EDR, special
equ ipment is required, and access to the veh i
cle or the EDR is needed. In add ition to the ve
h icle manufacturer, other parties, such as law
e nfo rcement, that have the special equip
ment, can read the information if they have
access to the ve hicl e or the EDR. Some state
laws restrict the retrieval o r down
loading of data stored by ED Rs insta lled in a
vehicle for the express purpose of retrieving data after an accident or crash event w ithout
the owner's consent .
Audi will not access the EDR and/or simi lar
data or g ive it to others -
- un less the vehi cle owner (or lessee if the ve
hicle has been leased) agrees; or
- upon the officia l request by the police ; or
- upon the o rder of a court of law or a govern-
ment agency; or
- for the defense of a lawsuit through the ju
dicia l discovery p rocess.
- Aud i may also use the data for research
about vehicle ope rat ion and safety perform
ance or provide the da ta to a third party fo r
research purposes without iden tif ying the
specif ic vehicle or in formation about the
identity of its owner or lessee and only after
the recorded vehicle data has been ac
cessed .
Vehicle control modul es
Your vehicle is also equ ipped with a n umber of
electron ic control modules for various vehicle
systems, such as engine management, emis
sion contro l, airbags, and safety belts.
T hese electronic con trol mod ules record data
during norma l vehicle operation that may be
needed by trained technicians for diagnostic
and repair purposes. The recording capability
of these modu les is limited to data (no sound
is recorded). Only a small amount of data is
actually recorded over a very lim ited period of
t ime, or stored when a system fault is detect
ed by a contro l modu le. Some of the data
stored may re late to vehicle speed, direction,
o r braking, as well as restraint system use and
performance in the event of a crash. Stored
data can also only be read and dow nloaded
with special eq uipment that is directly con-
nected to the vehicle. .,..

Electronic Stabilization
Control (ESC)
Description
ESC helps to improve road holding and vehicle
dynamics to help reduce the probability of
skidd ing and loss of veh icle control. It works
only when the eng ine is running. ESC detects
certain difficult driv ing situations, including
when the vehicle is beginning to spin (yaw) out of cont ro l and he lps you to get the vehicle
back under control by select ively b rak ing the
wheels, and/or red ucing engine powe r and
p roviding steering assistance to help hold the
ve hicle on the driver's intended course . The in
dicator light
DJ in the instrument cluster
blinks when ESC is taking action to help you
control the vehicle.
ESC has limitations.
It is important to remem
ber that ESC cannot overcome the laws of
phys ics. It will not a lways be able to help out
under all conditions you may come up against.
For example, ESC may not always be able to
h elp you master situat ions where there is a
sudden change in the coefficient of fr iction of
the road surface. When there is a sect io n of
d ry road that is s udden ly cove red with water,
slush o r snow, ESC canno t perform the same
way it would on the dry su rface.
If the vehicle
hydroplanes (rides on a c ush ion of wate r in
stead of the road surface), ESC wi ll not be
ab le to he lp you steer the veh icle because con-

tact with the pavement has been interrupted
and the vehicle cannot be braked or steered .
D uring fast corner ing, particular ly on wind ing
roads, ESC cannot always deal as effectively
with difficult dr iv ing s ituations than at lower
speeds. When towing a trailer, ESC is not able
to help you regain control as it would if you
were not tow ing a trailer.
Always adjust your speed and driving style to road, traffic and weather conditions . ESC can
not override the vehicle's physical lim its, in
crease the availab le tract ion, or keep a veh icle
o n the road if road departu re is a result of
driver ina ttent io n. Instead , ESC imp roves the
poss ibility of keep ing t he vehicle under con
trol and on the road during extreme maneu
vers by using the driver's steering i nputs to
help keep the vehicle go ing in the intended di
rect ion. If you are traveling at a speed that
causes you to run off the road before ESC can
provide any assistance, you may not experi
ence the benefits of ESC.
ESC is switched on all the time. In certain sit
uat ions when you need less traction, you can
switch off ASR by pressing the butto n
[ill
~ page 187, fig. 174 or~ page 187,
fig. 175. Be sure to sw itch ASR on aga in when

The following systems are integrated in the
ESC:
Anti-lock bra king sy stem (ABS )
ABS prevents the whee ls from locking up
when brak ing. T he vehicle can st ill be steered
even dur ing hard braking. App ly steady pres
su re to the brake peda l. Do not pump the ped
al. A pulsing in the brake pedal ind icates that
the system is helping you to brake the veh icle .
Brake assi st system
The brake ass ist system can decrease braking
distance. It increases brak ing power when the
drive r presses the brake peda l quickly in emer
gency s ituations. You must press and hold the
brake pedal unti l the s ituation is over. In
vehicles wi th adap tive c rui se control*, the
brake assis t system is more sensitive if the
