Never d rive until the tank is completely
empty. The irregular supp ly of fuel that re­
sults from that can cause the engine to
misfire. Uncombusted f uel will then enter
the exha ust system. This can cause over­
heating and damage to the catalytic con­
verter .
Coolant temperature indicator
The coolant temperature ind icator @
c::> page 10, fig . 3 only works when the ignition
is switched on . T o prevent engine damage, ob­
serve the fo llow ing notes about the tempe ra­
ture ranges.
Cold range
If only the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge
turn on, the engine has not reached operat ing
temperature yet . Avoid high engine speeds,
fu ll acce le rat ing and heavy engine loads.
Norm al range
The engine has reached its operating temper­
ature once the LEDs up to the center of the
gauge turn on under normal driving condi­
tions. The L EDs higher up may turn on if the
engine is under heavy load or the o uts ide tem­
perat ure is h igh. This is not a cause for con­
cern as long as the. indicator light in the
display does not t urn on. Hot range
If the L
EDs in the upper area of the d isp lay
and the. indicator light in the instrumen t
cluster disp lay t urn on, the coo lant tempe ra­
ture is too high

A WARNING
-Always observe the warning in
c;, page 214 before opening the hood
and checking the engine coolant level.
- Never open the eng ine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coo lant
dripping from the engine compartment .
You could burn yourself. Let the engi ne
coo l off first until you can no longe r see
or hea r steam or coolant escaping.

- Add itiona l headlights and other compo ­
ne nts in front of the a ir intake impairs
the cooling eff ect of the coolant. This in­
creases the risk of the engine over heat ­
ing dur ing high outs ide temper atures
and heavy eng ine load .
- The front spoiler also he lps to distr ibute
cooling air correct ly wh ile driving.
If the
spoiler is damaged, the coo ling effect
wi ll be impai red and the risk of the en­
gine overheating will increase. See an au­

a System indicator light (MIL)
The system indicator light (MIL) is part of the
On Board Diagnostic system (OBD II). The
¢4 symbol turns on when the ign it ion is
switched on and turns off aga in once th e en­
g ine is started an d running at a st eady idle
speed. This ind icates that the M IL is funct ion­
ing cor rectly .
The indicator light turns on if there is a mal ­
function in the engine electronics . See an au­
thor ized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Se rv­
ice Facility to have the malfunction co rrected.
The system indicator light (MIL) may turn on
if the fuel fille r cap is not closed correctly

!?) Engine speed limitation

The engine speed is automatically lim ited to
the speed disp layed in the driver information
system. This protects the engine from over­ heat ing.
The engine speed limitation deactivates once
the eng ine is no longer in the cr it ica l tempera ­
ture range and you have released the accelera­
tor peda l.
If the engine speed limitation was activated by an eng ine control malfunction, the~ indi­
cator light also turns on. Make s ure the en­
g ine speed does not go above the speed dis­
p layed, for examp le when downsh ifting. Drive
to an author ized Audi dealer or author ized
Aud i Service Fac ility immediately to have the
malfunct ion corrected .

F ue l economy messages are disp layed when

ditions. If yo u follo w these fuel economy mes­
sages, you can reduce your vehicle's consump­

On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
System indicator light (MIL)
The system indicator ligh t (M IL) ¢.§ in the in ­
str ument cl uster is part of the On Board Diag­
nostic System (OBD II).
T he warni ng/i ndicator light t urns on when the
ignition is sw itched on and t urns off once the
engine is sta rted and is runn ing in id le at a
stab le speed. This indicates that the MIL is
funct ioning correct ly.
If the light does not turn off after sta rting
the engine
or turns on while driving, t his may
indicate there is a ma lfunction in the engine.
If the indicator turns on, the cata lytic convert­
er may be damaged .
Drive
with reduced engine performance
(avoid high speeds for extended periods of
time and/or fast acceleration) and have the
malfunction corrected. See an authorized Audi
dealer or author ized Audi Service Facility.
The indicator may turn on if the electronic
speed limiter is faulty. For addit ional informa­
tion, refer to Q
page 30, Electronic speed

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo­
nents of your emission con trol system. Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code . In case of a mal­
function, the component will be ident ified
and the fau lt stored as a code in the control
module memory .
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fue l vapor recovery sys­
tem.
If the lig ht illuminates after a refuelling ,
stop the veh icle and ma ke sure the fuel filler
cap is proper ly closed

I n o rder to make an accurate d iagnosis, the
stored data can only be displayed using spe­
cia l diagnostic eq uipment (gener ic s can tool
for OBD).
I n o rder to connect the special diagnostic
equipment, push the p lug i nto the Data Link
Connector (DLC). The DLC is located to the
right of the hood release¢

service station can interp ret the code and pe r­

A WARNING

Electronic speed limiter*
Applies to vehicles: with electronic speed limiter
Your vehicle may be factory eq uipped w ith
t ir es that are rated fo r a max imum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h) . This is less than the
maximum speed of your vehicle. To reduce the
risk of sudden tire fa ilure and loss of contro l if
the vehicle is operated at excessive speeds,
your vehicle a lso has an electronic speed limit­
er . The elec tronic speed limi ter prevents your
vehicle from going faster than the tire speed rating . For more information ¢
page 248.
If the engine control unit receives faulty veh i­
cle road speed signa ls, the Malfunction Ind i­
cator Lamp (M IL)
¢..fi will illuminate . If this
occurs, contact the nea rest authorized A udi
dealer for assistance .
A WARNING
Always observe the posted speed lim its
a nd adjust your speed to suit prevai ling
road, traffic and weather cond itions. Never
d rive your vehicle faster than the maxi­
mum speed rating of the tires installed. -

ized persons to start the engine and oper­
ate vehicle systems such as the power win­
dows or sunroof . This can increase the risk
of serious injury .

-The vehicle cannot be started if an unau­
thorized key is used. It may not be poss i­
ble to start the vehicle under certain cir­
cumstances, for example if there is an­
other radio module like the key from an­
other vehicle or a transponde r on the
same keychain.

Safety central locking
Applies to vehicles: with safety central locking
Safety central locking provides the possibility,
to only unlock the driver's door and the fuel
filler door. The rest of the vehicle remains
locked.

The front passenger's door must be locked
separately if the power locking system fails.

The driver's door can be locked using the door

The emergency lock is located on the edge of
the front passenger 's door . It is only visible
when the door is open .
.. Pull the cover cap out of the opening.
.. Insert the key bit into the slit on the inside
and turn the key all the way to the right .
Once the door has been closed, it can no lon­ ger be opened from the outside. The door can
be unlocked and opened from the inside by
pulling the door handle once .

Many gasoline grades are blended to perform
especially well for winter or summer driving. During seasonal change-over , we suggest that
you fill up at busy gas stations where the sea­ sonal adjustment is more likely to be made in
time.

- Methanol fuels which do not meet these requirements may cause corrosion and
damage to plastic and rubber compo ­
nents in the fuel system .
- Do not use fuels that fail to meet the
specified criteria in this chapter .
- If you are unable to determine whether
or not a particular fuel blend meets the
specificat ions, ask your service station or
i ts fuel supp lier .
- Do not use fuel for which the contents cannot be identified .
- Fuel system damage and performance
problems resulting from the use of fuels
different from those specified are not
the responsibility of Audi and are not
covered under the New Vehicle or the
Emission Control System Warranties.
- If you experience a loss of fuel economy
or driveability and performance prob­
lems due to the use of one of these fuel
blends, we recommend that you switch
to unblended fuel.
Gasoline additives
A major concern among many auto manufac­
turers is carbon deposit build-up caused by
the type of gasoline you use .
Although gasoline grades differ from one manufacturer to another, they have cer tain
things in common. All gasoline grades contain substances that can cause deposits to collect
on vital engine parts, such as fuel injectors
and intake valves. Although most gasoline
brands include additives to keep engine and
fuel systems clean, they are not equally effec­
tive.

Audi recommends using TOP TIER Detergent
Gasoline . For more information on TOP TIER
Detergent Gasoline, please go to the official

After an extended period of using inadequate
fuels, carbon deposit build-ups can rob your engine of peak performance.

Damage or malfunction due to poor fuel
quality is not covered by the Audi New Ve­
hicle Limited Warranty.
Fuel tank
Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the right rear
side panel behind the fuel filler flap.
If the power locking system should fail, you
can still open the flap manually -for detailed
instructions see~
page 213.
You can find the fuel tank capacity of your ve ­
hicle in
~ page 280.
The label on the inside of the fuel filler flap
tells you the correct fuel for your vehicle. For
more information about fuel specifications,
see
~ page 210 .
Your vehicle fuel tank has an on board refuel­
ling vapor recovery system. This feature helps
to prevent fuel vapors from escaping from the
tank and polluting the environment while you refuel your vehicle. In order to fill the tank
properly while protecting the environment,
please follow this refueling procedure careful­
ly .
A WARNING ~
Under normal operating conditions, never
carry additional fuel containers in your car.
Gas canisters and other containers used to
transport fuel can be dangerous. Such con­
tainers, full or empty, may leak and could
cause a fire in a collision . If you must
transport fuel to use for your lawn mower, ..,.

snow blower, etc., be very careful and al­
ways observe local and state laws regard­ ing the use, transportation and storage of
such fuel containers . Make certain the con­
tainer meets industry standards (ANSI/
ASTM F852 -86) .

Once the pump nozzle switches off, the fue l
tank is "fu ll". Do not fill the tank more. Other­
wise the expansion space in the tank will be
filled.
The correct fuel type for your vehicle can be
f ound on a label located on the inside of the
fuel filler door. For additional information on
fuel, refer to
c::> page 210 .
The fue l tank capacity of your vehicle is in the
Techni cal D ata c::> page 280.
To avoid fuel spill ing or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel filler cap properly and completely. An improperly closed fuel fi ll­
er cap may also cause the M IL lamp

to come on .
A WARNING
Not paying attention when fueling or han­
d ling fuel incorrect ly can lead to fires, ex­
plosions or serious injuries.
- Fue l ignites easily and can cause serious
burns and other injuries.
- If you do not switch the engine off when
fue ling and/or do not insert the fuel noz­
zle completely into the tank opening ,
fuel can leak out or run over. Leaked fuel can ignite and start a fire .
- Do not use the telephone while fueling.
The electromagnetic rays can cause
sparks, wh ich can ignite fuel vapors and
start a fire.
- Do not sit in your vehicle while fueling . If
you must make an exception and enter
your veh icle again while fueling, close
the door and touch metal to discharge

nozz le . Static electricity can create
sparks, wh ich can ignite vapors when fu-

-Do not smoke or have an open flame in
the area when fueling your vehicle or fill­
ing a fuel container because this
increases the risk of an explosion .
- For your safety, carrying fuel containers
in your vehicle is recommended. Wheth­
er full or empty, the container can leak
and cause a fire in the event of an acci­
dent .
- If you must make an exception and
transport a fuel container, note the fol­
lowing:
- Never f ill the fuel container with fuel
while it is in or on the vehicle. Static
electricity is discharged when filling
which can cause the fuel vapors to ig­
nite and increases the risk of an explo ­
s10n .
- Always place a fuel container on the
ground before filling .
- Always hold the fuel nozzle completely
in the fuel container when filling.
- If the fuel container is made of metal,
the fuel nozzle must always be in con­
tact with the container when filling it
with fuel. This prevents static electrici­
ty from discharg ing.
- Never sp ill fuel in the vehicle or the
luggage compartment. Evaporated fuel
is exp losive and increases the risk of
serious injury or death .
- Follow legal requirements when using,
storing and transporting fuel contain­
ers.
- Make sure the fuel container conforms
to indust ry standards (ANSI/ASTM
F852-86).

-Remove spilled fuel from vehicle paint
immediately, because it can damage
paint.
- Never drive until the fuel tank is com­
pletely empty. The irregular supply of
fuel that results from that can cause the

@ For the sake of the environment
- If the fuel nozzle is used correctly , it will
indicate that the tank is full the first
time it switches off automatically. Do
not try to add more fuel, because it can
spill over. Also, the expansion space in
the tank will fill , which can result in fuel
spilling out when it becomes warm and
polluting the environment.
(D Tips
- If the engine is running while fueling, va­
pors can escape or the fuel can spill over .
Because of this, the fuel nozzle switches
off before the tank is full.
- Do not fuel the vehicle when the ign ition
is switched on . Otherwise, the fuel
gauge may not show the correct level af­
ter fueling the vehicle .
- The fuel filler door on your vehicle does
not lock when you lock the vehicle from
the inside .
Fuel filler door emergency release
If the central locking system is faulty, the
fuel filler door can be unlocked manually .
