4. Add coolant to the maximum level
mark, and then install the coolant
reservoir cap. NOTICE: If coolant
is not availa ble, use d istilled wa-
ter or soft tap water instea d. Do
not use har d water or salt water
since it is harmful to the en gine.
If water has been used instead
of coolant, replace it with cool-
ant as soon as possi ble, other-
wise the coolin g system will not
b e protected against frost an d
corrosion. If water has been
a dde d to the coolant, have a
Yamaha dealer check the anti-
freeze content of the coolant as soon as possi
ble, otherwise the
effectiveness of the coolant will
b e red uced.

5. Route the coolant reservoir
breather hose through the guide
as shown.

To chan ge the coolant
1. Place the vehicle on a level sur- face and let the engine cool if nec-
essary.
2. Remove cowling A and panel B. (See page 6-8.) 3. Place a container under the en-
gine to collect the used coolant.
4. Remove the radiator cap retaining bolt, radiator cap retainer and ra-
diator cap. WARNING! Never at-
tempt to remove the ra diator
cap when the en gine is hot.

66. Remove the coolant reservoir cov-
er and coolant reservoir by remov-
ing the bolts. 7. Drain the coolant from the coolant
reservoir by turning it upside
down.
8. Remove the coolant drain bolt and its gasket to drain the cooling sys-
tem.
9. After the coolant is completely drained, thoroughly flush the cool-
ing system with clean tap water.
10. Install the coolant drain bolt and its new gasket, and then tighten
the bolt to the specified torque. 11. Install the coolant reservoir and its
cover by placing them in the origi-
nal position, and then installing the
bolts.
12. Pour the specified amount of the recommended coolant into the ra-
diator and reservoir.
13. Install the radiator cap.
14. Install the coolant reservoir cap.
15. Start the engine, let it idle for sev- eral minutes, and then turn it off.
16. Remove the radiator cap to check the coolant level in the radiator. If
necessary, add sufficient coolant
until it reaches the top of the radi-

17. Check the coolant level in the res- ervoir. If necessary, remove the
coolant reservoir cap, add coolant
to the maximum level mark, and
then install the cap.
18. Route the coolant reservoir breather hose through the guide
as shown. 19. Start the engine, and then check
the vehicle for coolant leakage. If
coolant is leaking, have a Yamaha
dealer check the cooling system.
20. Install the cowling and the panel.

Replacin g the air filter ele-
mentThe air filter element should be re-
placed at the intervals specified in the
periodic maintenance and lubrication
chart. Replace the air filter element
more frequently if you are riding in un-
usually wet or dusty areas.
1. Remove the seat. (See page 3-18.)
2. Remove the fuel tank bolts, and then lift the fuel tank away from
the air filter case.

WARNING
EWA10401
Do not remove the ra diator cap when the en gine an d ra diator are hot. Scal din g hot flui d an d steam may be
b lown out un der pressure, which coul d cause serious injury. Be sure to wait until the en gine has coole d.
After removin g the ra diator cap retainin g b olt, place a thick ra g, like a towel, over the rad iator cap, and then
slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the d etent to allow any residual pressure to escape. When the hiss-
in g soun d has stoppe d, press d own on the cap while turnin g it counterclockwise, an d then remove the cap.TIPIf coolant is not available, tap water can be temporarily used instead, provided that it is changed to the recommended cool-
ant as soon as possible.
Wait until the
engine has cooled.
Check the coolant level in the
reservoir and radiator.
The coolant level
is OK.The coolant level is low.
Check the cooling system
for leakage.
Have a Yamaha dealer checkand repair the cooling system.Add coolant. (See TIP.)
Start the engine. If the engine overheats again,
have a
Yamaha dealer check
and repair the cooling system.
There is
leakage.
