Climate control system – general information
03
94* Option/accessory, for more information, see Introduction.
Condensation on the inside of the windows
Keeping the insides of the windows clean will help reduce the amount of condensation thatforms on the windows. Use a commercialwindow cleaning agent to clean the windows.
Ice and snow
Always keep the air intake grille at the base of the windshield free of snow.
Cabin air filter
Replace the cabin air filter with a new one at the recommended intervals. Please refer toyour Warranty and Service Records Informa-tion booklet, or consult a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician for these intervals. The filter should be replaced more often whendriving under dirty and dusty conditions. Thefilter cannot be cleaned and therefore shouldalways be replaced with a new one.
Sensors
The sunlight sensor on the dashboard and passenger compartment temperature sensorin the ECC control panel should not be cov-ered in any way as this could cause incorrectinformation to be sent to the ECC system.
Parking the vehicle in warm weather
If your vehicle has been parked in the sun in warm weather, opening the windows andmoonroof* for several minutes before drivingwill help release the warm air from the pas-senger compartment. When the engine is run-ning, close the windows and moonroof anduse the recirculation function for severalminutes to enable the air conditioning to coolthe compartment as quickly as possible.
Windows and optional moonroof
The ECC system will function best if the win- dows and optional moonroof are closed. Ifyou drive with the moonroof open, we recom-mend that you manually adjust the tempera-ture and blower control (the LED in the AUTO
switch should be off).
Acceleration
The air conditioning is momentarily disen- gaged during full-throttle acceleration.
Climate control maintenance
Special tools and equipment are required to maintain and carry out repairs on the climatesystem. Work of this type should only bedone by a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician.
Refrigerant
Volvo cares about the environment. The air conditioning system in your vehicle containsa CFC-free refrigerant – R134a (HFC134a).This substance will not deplete the ozonelayer. The approximate amount of R134acontained in the system is a follows: 6-cylinder engine Single A/C system: 1.5 lbs (700 g) Dual 1
A/C system: 2.2 lbs (1000 g)
The system also uses PAG oil.
1 Includes the optional rear A/C system
06 Starting and driving
Economical driving

Economical driving conserves natural resources
Better driving economy may be obtained by thinking ahead, avoiding rapid starts andstops and adjusting the speed of your vehicleto immediate traffic conditions. Observe thefollowing rules:
• Bring the engine to normal operating tem- perature as soon as possible by drivingwith a light foot on the accelerator pedalfor the first few minutes of operation. Acold engine uses more fuel and is subjectto increased wear.
• Whenever possible, avoid using the vehi-cle for driving short distances. This doesnot allow the engine to reach normaloperating temperature.
• Drive carefully and avoid rapid accelera-tion and hard braking.
• Use the transmission's
D (Drive) position
as often as possible and avoid using"kickdown" to help improve fuel econ-omy.
• Do not exceed posted speed limits.
• Avoid carrying unnecessary items (extraload) in the vehicle.
• Maintain correct tire pressure. Check tirepressure regularly (when tires are cold).
• Remove snow tires when threat of snowor ice has ended. •
Note that roof racks, ski racks, etc, increase air resistance and also fuel con-sumption.
• At highway driving speeds, fuel consump-tion will be lower with the air conditioningon and the windows closed than with theair conditioning off and the windowsopen.
• Using the onboard trip computer's fuelconsumption modes can help you learnhow to drive more economically.
Other factors that decrease gas mileage are: • Dirty air cleaner
• Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter
• Dragging brakes
• Incorrect front end alignment.
Some of the above mentioned items and oth- ers are checked at the standard MaintenanceService intervals.
CAUTION
Drive slowly and carefully if going through standing water (i.e. flooded roadways,etc.). Damage to the engine could result ifexcess water is drawn in through the airintake system. Never drive the vehicle inwater deeper than 18 inches (48 cm).

Engine oil 09
222
Oil specifications
Full synthetic engine oil meeting the minimum ACEA A5/B5 must be used. Lower quality oilsmay not offer the same fuel economy, engineperformance, or engine protection. Refer to the Warranty and Service Records information booklet for information on oilchange intervals and oil type requirements.
NOTE
This vehicle comes from the factory with synthetic oil.
Oil additives must not be used.
Oil viscosityIncorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life under normal use. SAE 5W-30 will providegood fuel economy and engine protection.See the viscosity chart.
Viscosity chart
Extreme engine operationSAE 0W-30 oil meeting ACEA A5/B5 require- ments is recommended for driving in areaswith sustained low temperatures.
NOTE
Volvo uses different systems to indicate a low oil level or pressure. Some modelshave an oil pressure sensor, in which casea warning symbol (see page 60) is used toindicate low oil pressure. Other modelshave an oil level sensor, in which case thedriver is alerted by the warning symbol inthe center of the instrument panel and atext in the information display. Some mod-els use both systems. Contact a trainedand qualified Volvo service technician formore information.
Changing engine oil and oil filter
See page 290 for oil volumes. Refer to the Warranty and Service Records Informationbooklet for information on the oil changeintervals.
NOTE
Volvo does not recommend the use of oil additives.
Checking and adding oil

Location of dipstick (1) and oil filler cap (2)
The oil level should be checked at regular intervals, particularly during the period up tothe first scheduled maintenance service.
