TUNE : From TEL mode's normal view,
turn clockwise to display the phone book or counterclockwise for the phone list. Itcan also be used for navigating in dis-played menus. The thumb wheel in the steering wheel keypad can be used in thesame way.
OK/MENU
: Press to answer an incoming
call, confirm your selection or access the phone menus. Incoming calls can also beanswered by pressing the thumb wheelon the steering wheel keypad.
EXIT : Press to end or reject calls, erase
characters that have been entered, end an ongoing function and goes back in themenus. This button on the steering wheelkeypad can also be used in the sameway.
Getting started
Use the controls on the steering wheel key- pad and in the center console to access, nav-igate and make selections in the hands-freesystem’s menus.
ActivationA short press on the TEL button in the center
console activates the Bluetooth ®
hands-free
system. If the system is already activatedwhen the button is pressed, a shortcut menu will be displayed. The
symbol at the
upper right of the display indicates that the hands-free system is active.
Pairing (connecting) external Bluetooth ®
devices
A maximum of 10 cell phones or other devi- ces can be paired with the hands-free sys-tem. Pairing only needs to be done once foreach phone. After pairing, the cell phone nolonger needs to be in sight or discoverable. Two Bluetooth ®
devices (e.g., a phone and an
iPod ®
) can be active at the same. However,
two phones cannot be used at the same time to make calls. There are two ways of pairing a cell phone to the hands-free system for the first time: Method 1: Search for the external device
using the infotainment menus1. Activate the cell phone’s Bluetooth ®
func-
tion to make it discoverable (refer to the phone’s user manual if necessary) or goto www.volvocars.com
2. Press TEL.
> The infotainment system will search for previously paired devices.
3. Press the thumb wheel on the steering wheel keypad or OK/MENU and select
Add phone.1

Select Change phone if the cell phone or device has already been paired with the infotainment system. If several phones or devices have already been paired, their names will also be displayed. Scroll to the device to be connected and press the thumb wheel on the steering wheel keypad or OK/MENU.

Making a call1. Ensure that is shown at the top of
the center console display and that the hands-free function is in telephone mode.
2. Dial the desired phone number using the center console keypad or use the speeddial function (see page 260). In normalview (see page see page 225 for informa-tion about the various display views), it isalso possible to turn TUNE clockwise to
access the phone book and then counter-clockwise for the call list. See page 261for more information about the phonebook.
3. Press the thumb wheel or OK/MENU.
End or reject a call by pressing EXIT.
Disconnecting the cell phoneThe cell phone is automatically disconnectedfrom the infotainment system if it is movedout of range. The cell phone can be manually disconnected from the hands-free system by pressing andholding TEL or in phone mode, going to
Phone menuDisconnect phone. See also
page 257 for more information about con- nections. The hands-free system is also deactivatedwhen the ignition is switched off (or if thedriver’s door is opened). When the cell phone is disconnected from the hands-free system, a call in progress can becontinued using the cell phone’s own speakerand microphone. Even if the cell phone has been disconnected manually, some phones may reconnect auto-matically, for example when a new call is initi-ated.
Removing a paired deviceA paired phone or device can be removedfrom the list. To do so:
1. Press
TEL.
2. Select
Phone menuRemove
Bluetooth device.
Handling calls
Incoming calls–Press OK/MENU (or the thumb wheel on
the steering wheel keypad) to answer a call, even if the infotainment system is currently in another mode (e.g.,
RADIO orMEDIA).
Press EXIT to reject a call.
Auto answerThis function means that incoming calls will be answered automatically. Activate or deac-tivate the function in the menu system under
Phone menuCall optionsAuto
answer.
Call settingsWhile a call is in progress, press OK/MENU
or the thumb wheel on the steering wheel keypad to access the following functions:

Mute: mute the infotainment system’s
microphone.
•
Mobile phone: transfer the call from
hands-free to the cell phone. On certain cell phones, the connection will be bro-ken, which is normal. The hands-freefunction will ask if you would like toreconnect.
•
Dial number: dial a third party during an
ongoing call using the keypad (the current call will be put on hold).
Call listsCall lists are copied to the hands-free func- tion each time a cell phone is connected andthe lists are updated while the phone is con-nected. In normal view, turn TUNE counter-
clockwise to see the

connected when the contact is saved. These contacts will be displayed regard-less of the cell phone that is connected. Ifa contact has been saved in the infotain- ment system, the
symbol will be
displayed next to it.
NOTE
Changes made from the infotainment sys- tem to a contact in the cell phone's phonebook will result in a new contact beingadded to the infotainment system's phonebook. However, this contact will not besaved in the cell phone's phone book. Theinfotainment system's display will showduplicate contacts with different icons. Please also note that if a speed dial num- ber is saved or if a contact's information isedited, this will result in a new contact inthe infotainment system's phone book.
The symbol must be displayed before
the phone book can be used and the hands- free function must be in phone mode. The infotainment system saves a copy of each paired cell phone's phone book. Thisphone book can be copied each time thephone is connected.

Contact shortcutsA quick way of searching the phone book forcontacts in normal view is to turn TUNE

Each name in the phone book has a default phone number. If the
symbol is displayed
to the right of it, this indicates that there are additional phone numbers for this contact. Touse a phone number other than the default one, press the

console control panel. Turn TUNE to select a
different phone number and press OK/MENU
to call. It is also possible to search for a contact by using the center console keypad to enter thefirst letter(s) of the contact's name (see alsothe following table "Buttons in the center con-sole" for each button's function). The list of contacts can also be accessed from normal view by pressing and holding thebutton on the center console keypad with the first letter of the contact's name. Before a long distance tripIt is always worthwhile to have your vehicle checked by a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician before driving long dis-tances. Your retailer will also be able to sup-ply you with bulbs, fuses, spark plugs andwiper blades for your use in the event thatproblems occur. As a minimum, the following items should be checked before any long trip:• Check that engine runs smoothly and that fuel consumption is normal.
• Check for fuel, oil, and fluid leakage
• Have the transmission oil level checked.
• Check condition of drive belts.
• Check state of the battery's charge.
• Examine tires carefully (the spare tire aswell), and replace those that are worn.Check tire pressures.
• The brakes, front wheel alignment, andsteering gear should be checked by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian only.
• Check all lights, including high beams.
• Reflective warning triangles are legallyrequired in some states/provinces.
• Have a word with a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician if you intend to drive in countries where it may be difficultto obtain the correct fuel.
• Consider your destination. If you will bedriving through an area where snow or iceare likely to occur, consider snow tires.
Cold weather precautionsIf you wish to check your vehicle before the approach of cold weather, the followingadvice is worth noting:
• Make sure that the engine coolant con- tains 50 percent antifreeze. Any othermixture will reduce freeze protection. Thisgives protection against freezing down to–31 °F (–35 °C). The use of "recycled"antifreeze is not approved by Volvo. Dif-ferent types of antifreeze must not bemixed.
• Volvo recommends using only genuineVolvo antifreeze in your vehicle's radiator.
• Try to keep the fuel tank well filled – thishelps prevent the formation of condensa-tion in the tank. In addition, in extremelycold weather conditions it is worthwhileto add fuel line de-icer before refueling.
• The viscosity of the engine oil is impor-tant. Oil with low viscosity (thinner oil)improves cold-weather starting as well asdecreasing fuel consumption while theengine is warming up. Full synthetic0W-30 oil is recommended for driving inareas with sustained low temperatures. •
The load placed on the battery is greaterduring the winter since the windshieldwipers, lighting, etc., are used moreoften. Moreover, the capacity of the bat-tery decreases as the temperature drops.In very cold weather, a poorly chargedbattery can freeze and be damaged. It istherefore advisable to check the state ofcharge more frequently and spray an anti-rust oil on the battery posts.
• Volvo recommends the use of snow tireson all four wheels for winter driving, seepage 300.
• To prevent the washer fluid reservoir fromfreezing, add washer solvents containingantifreeze. This is important since dirt isoften splashed on the windshield duringwinter driving, requiring the frequent useof the washers and wipers. Volvo WasherSolvent should be diluted as follows:Down to 14 °F (–10 °C): 1 part washersolvent and 4 parts water Down to 5 °F(–15 °C): 1 part washer solvent and3 parts water Down to 0 °F (–18 °C):1 part washer solvent and 2 parts waterDown to –18 °F (–28 °C): 1 part washersolvent and 1 part water.
• Use Volvo Teflon Lock Spray in the locks.
• Avoid using de-icing sprays as they cancause damage to the locks.

Opening/closing the fuel filler door
The fuel filler door is located on the right rear fender (indicated by an arrow beside the fueltank symbol on the information display
)
With the ignition switched off, press and release the button on the lighting panel tounlock the fuel filler door. Please note that thefuel filler door will remain unlocked until thevehicle begins to move forward. An audibleclick will be heard when the fuel filler doorrelocks. • If you intend to leave your vehicle while it is being refueled, this feature enables youto lock the doors/trunk while leaving thefuel filler door unlocked.
• You can also keep the vehicle locked ifyou remain inside it during refueling. The central locking button does not lock thefuel filler door.
• Be sure the fuel filler door is not obstruc-ted and is completely closed after refuel-ing.
• Open the fuel filler cap slowly during hotweather.
Close the fuel filler door by pressing it; a click indicates that it is closed.
CAUTION
• Avoid spilling gasoline during refueling. In addition to causing damage to theenvironment, gasolines containingalcohol can cause damage to paintedsurfaces, which may not be coveredunder the New Vehicle Limited War-ranty.
Manually opening the fuel filler door

If necessary, the fuel filler door can be opened manually:
1. Open the side hatch in the trunk (on the
same side as the fuel filler door).
2. Grasp the handle on the green cord.
3. Gently pull the cord straight rearward until the fuel filler door clicks open.

Fuel vapor expands in hot weather. Open the filler cap slowly. After refueling, close the fuel filler cap by turning it clockwise until it clicks into place.
CAUTION
•Do not refuel with the engine running 2
.
Turn the ignition off or to position I. If
the ignition is on, an incorrect reading could occur in the fuel gauge.
• Avoid overfilling the fuel tank. Do notpress the handle on the filler nozzlemore than one extra time. Too muchfuel in the tank in hot weather condi-tions can cause the fuel to overflow.Overfilling could also cause damage tothe emission control systems.
Emission controls
Three-way catalytic converter
•
Keep your engine properly tuned. Certain engine malfunctions, particularly involvingthe electrical, fuel or distributor ignitionsystems, may cause unusually high three-way catalytic converter temperatures. Donot continue to operate your vehicle ifyou detect engine misfire, noticeable lossof power or other unusual operating con-ditions, such as engine overheating orbackfiring. A properly tuned engine will help avoid malfunctions that could dam-age the three-way catalytic converter.
• Do not park your vehicle over combusti-ble materials, such as grass or leaves,which can come into contact with the hotexhaust system and cause such materialsto ignite under certain wind and weatherconditions.
• Excessive starter cranking (in excess ofone minute), or an intermittently firing orflooded engine can cause three-way cat-alytic converter or exhaust system over-heating.
• Remember that tampering or unauthor-ized modifications to the engine, theEngine Control Module, or the vehiclemay be illegal and can cause three-waycatalytic converter or exhaust systemoverheating. This includes: altering fuelinjection settings or components, alteringemission system components or locationor removing components, and/or repea-ted use of leaded fuel.
NOTE
Unleaded fuel is required for vehicles with three-way catalytic converters.

If the fuel filler cap is not closed tightly or if the engine is running when the vehicle is refueled, the Check Engine Light (malfunction indicator lamp) may indicate a fault. However, your vehicle's performance will not be affected. Use only Volvo original or approved fuel filler caps.

Introduction
The load carrying capacity of your vehicle is determined by factors such as the number ofpassengers, the amount of cargo, the weightof any accessories that may be installed, etc. To increase loading space, the rear seat backrests can be folded down, see page 89. When loading the trunk, keep the following in mind:
The trunk lid can be unlocked anpopped open slightly via the buttonlocated on the lighting panel, see
page 68.
• Load objects in the trunk against the backrest whenever possible.
• Unstable loads can be secured to theload anchoring eyelets with straps or weblashings to help keep them from shifting.
• Stop the engine and apply the parkingbrake when loading or unloading longobjects. The gear selector can beknocked out of position by long loads,which could set the vehicle in motion.
WARNING
• Stop the engine, put the gear selector in
P, and apply the parking brake
when loading or unloading longobjects.
• The vehicle's driving characteristicsmay change depending on the weightand distribution of the load.
• A 44-pound (20 kg) object produces aforce of 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg) in ahead-on collision at 30 mph (50 km/h).
• The rear seat should not be loaded toa level higher than 2 in. (5 cm) belowthe upper edge of the rear side win-dows. Objects placed higher than thislevel could impede the function of theVolvo Inflatable Curtain.
Folding down the rear seat backrests
The rear seat backrests can be folded down for additional loading space, see page 90.
Load anchoring eyelets

The load anchoring eyelets on both sides of the vehicle are used to fasten straps, etc., tohelp anchor items in the trunk.

Towing the vehicle
1. With the remote key fully pressed into theignition slot 1
, press START/STOP
ENGINE for approximately 2 seconds to
activate ignition mode II.
2. The remote key must remain in the igni- tion slot 2
for the entire time that the vehi-
cle is being towed.
3. Keep the tow rope taut when the towing vehicle slows down by applying light pressure on the brake pedal. This willhelp prevent jarring movements of thevehicle being towed.
4. Be prepared to apply the brakes to stop the vehicle being towed.CAUTION
General towing precautions:
• Please check with state and local authorities before attempting this typeof towing, as vehicles being towed aresubject to regulations regarding maxi-mum towing speed, length and type oftowing device, lighting, etc.
• If the vehicle's battery is dead, attachjumper cables (see page 119) to pro-vide current for releasing the electricparking brake and to move the gearselector from the
P position to N. If
this is not possible, see page 124 forinformation about manually overridingthe shiftlock system to move the gearselector from P to N.
• Maximum speed: 50 mph (80 km/h).Do not exceed the maximum allowabletowing speed.
• Maximum distance with front wheelson ground: 50 miles (80 km).
• The vehicle should only be towed inthe forward direction.
Having the vehicle towed by a tow truck
Call for professional help from an authorized towing company.Volvo recommends the useof flat bed equipment. The towing eyelet may be used to pull the vehicle onto a flatbed tow truck if:
• The angle of the tow truck’s ramp is not more than 12 degrees from a horizontalplane
• The vehicle’s wheels rotate freely and rollstraight ahead
WARNING
No person or object should be behind the tow truck while the vehicle is being pulledup onto the flatbed.
