If your vehicle does not have a multi-function steering wheel with menu controls, the instrument cluster
menus are controlled with buttons on the end of the windshield wiper lever (⇒ fig. 17). On vehicles with menu control multi-function steering wheels, the instrument cluster menus are controlled with buttons
on the right side of the steering wheel ⇒ fig. 18.
Accessing the instrument cluster menus
x Switch on the ignition.
x If a message or the vehicle icon is displayed, push the rocker switch (1) (⇒ fig. 17) on the end of
the windshield wiper lever or the OK button (⇒ fig. 18) on the right side of the multi-function steering wheel to display the main menus (on some vehicles, a list of main menus) in the instrument cluster display.
x For operation with windshield wiper lever: To show the main menu ,Main menus (Premium version)
or to go back to the main menu from another menu, press and hold the rocker switch ⇒ fig. 17 (2).
x For operation with multi-function steering wheel: To scroll through the various main menu items,
push the button # or ∃ several times ⇒ fig. 18.
Displaying a submenu
x Windshield wiper lever: Move up and down in a menu by pushing the top or bottom of rocker
switch (2) (⇒ fig. 17) until the menu item / selection you want is highlighted.
x Multi-function steering wheel: Press arrow buttons * or + until the menu item / selection you want is highlighted. Press and hold an arrow button to increase or decrease values faster.

NOTICE
The remote control vehicle keys contain electrical components. Protect them from damage, moisture and rough handling.
Do not press the buttons on the remote control vehicle key unless you actually want to use the function in question. Since terrain and conditions vary, pressing a button on the remote control vehicle key when it is not necessary may unlock the vehicle or set off the panic alarm, even if you think you are out of range.
Remote control vehicle key functions can be temporarily disrupted by interference from transmit-ters near the vehicle that use the same frequency range (such as radio equipment or mobile phones).
Things between the remote control vehicle key and vehicle, bad weather, as well as a weak battery can reduce the operating range.
If the remote control vehicle key buttons, Unlocking or locking the vehicle from the outside or the power locking buttons, Unlocking or locking the vehicle from the inside are pushed repeatedly in quick succession, the power locking system is switched off for a brief period to help keep it from being overloaded. The vehicle is then unlocked for about 30 seconds. Unless a door or the luggage com-partment lid is opened in this span of time, the vehicle is automatically locked afterwards.

The doors and the luggage compartment lid can be locked manually if the remote control vehicle key or the power locking system is not working, Emergency closing and opening.
Automatic locking (Auto lock)
The vehicle locks automatically when it reaches a speed of about 10 mph (15 km/h). When the vehicle
is locked, the indicator light 1 comes on in the power locking button ⇒ fig. 26.
Automatic unlocking (Auto unlock)
All doors automatically unlock when you switch off the ignition and open a door from inside the vehicle. On vehicles with automatic transmission, the doors will also unlock when the selector lever is in Park (P) and the ignition is switched off. Auto unlock works only if the vehicle has been automatically locked with the Auto lock feature. The indicator light W goes out in the power locking button when the doors
unlock ⇒ fig. 26.
Locking the vehicle after airbag inflation
If the airbags are activated during a collision, the entire vehicle is unlocked. Depending on the severity of the damage, the vehicle can be locked after a collision when the airbags have deployed as follows:

Function Action
Locking the vehicle with the power locking button: – Switch the ignition off. – Open and close a door once. – Press the power locking button 1.
Locking the vehicle with the remote control vehicle key: – Switch the ignition off. OR: Remove the vehicle key from the ignition. – Open a door once. – Lock the vehicle with the remote control vehicle key.

Note: Depending on the central remote control settings, it may be necessary to press the 0 button on the remote control vehicle key twice to unlock all doors and the luggage compartment lid, Volkswagen Information System. If you would like to have these settings changed, please see your authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
The vehicle key unlocks or locks the vehicle only when the battery in the remote control vehicle key has enough power, and the remote control vehicle key is within a few yards/meters of the vehicle.
x All turn signals flash once and the horn beeps once to confirm that the vehicle has been locked. The horn beep can be disabled by deactivating the “ATA confirmation” feature. Please see your au-thorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility to have this setting adjusted.
x All turn signals flash twice to confirm that the vehicle has been unlocked.
If the turn signals do not flash to confirm locking, one or more doors or the luggage compartment lid is not locked.
If the driver door is open, the vehicle cannot be locked with the remote control vehicle key.
If the vehicle was unlocked with the remote control vehicle key and the door or the luggage compart-ment lid has not been opened within a few seconds, the vehicle is automatically locked again. This feature helps prevent you from leaving the vehicle unlocked unintentionally.
NOTICE
Check to make sure that the windows go down slightly when you unlock the vehicle. Otherwise the windows and seals could be damaged when opening the door.

Opening or closing the convertible top with the remote control vehicle
key

In some vehicles equipped with the Keyless Access locking and starting system, Power locking and closing system, the convertible can be opened or closed from outside the vehicle when the ignition is off using a valid remote control vehicle key. For this to work, the vehicle key must be within range of the Keyless Access locking and starting system, Unlocking or locking the vehicle with Keyless Access. Volkswagen recommends having the vehicle key less than 1 meter from the door handle on the driver or passenger door.
Before opening or closing the convertible top with the vehicle key, note the following:
x The vehicle doors must be closed.
x Make sure there is enough room above the vehicle for the convertible top to open ⇒ .
Opening or closing the convertible top using the vehicle key
x Follow the checklists and perform the steps on, General information.
x Hold the remote control vehicle key outside the vehicle near the door handle on the driver or passenger door.
x To open: Briefly press the 0 button in the remote control vehicle key. Then press and hold the button within about 2 seconds. Continue holding the button until the convertible top is completely open
⇒ . A chime sounds repeatedly until the convertible top has opened completely.
x To close: Briefly press the 1 button in the remote control vehicle key. Then press and hold the button within about 2 seconds. Continue holding the button until the convertible top is completely
closed ⇒ . A chime sounds repeatedly until the convertible top has closed completely.
Interrupting convertible top operation
The convertible top operation will stop if you release the 0 or 1 button in the remote control vehicle key
⇒ .
When convertible top operation is interrupted, audible warning signals sound after a few seconds and the convertible top will lower either to the front or to the rear of the vehicle, depending on where it was when operation was interrupted.
Continuing convertible top operation
If convertible top operation was interrupted, you can continue operation by pressing and holding the 0
or 1 button in the remote control vehicle key ⇒ .

Removing the convertible top cover
x Press the release buttons on each side of the cover A (1) and lift the convertible top cover at the inner side (arrows).
x Pull the convertible top cover out by the loop in area A (2) (slide your other hand under the cover and lift area (2) up while pulling on the loop, if necessary).
x Pull the left and right sides of the cover out of the retainer B (4).
x Pull the rear area of the convertible top cover B (3) next to the seal above the luggage compartment lid.
x Remove the convertible top cover from the vehicle and fold it up. Clean the cover before folding, if necessary.
x Store the convertible top cover securely in the luggage compartment.
NOTICE
Dirt particles with sharp edges can cause abrasions and damage to the convertible top cover when it is folded.
x Clean the convertible top cover before folding it up.
The convertible top button does not work when the convertible top cover is installed. If the button is pressed anyway, the convertible top indicator light will blink as long as the button is pressed.
Convertible top troubleshooting

Description Possible solution
The convertible top will not open or will not close.
– Check to make sure all the preliminary and technical requirements for convertible top operation are met – If the convertible top still will not operate, use the emergency procedure to close the convertible top, if necessary – Have the system checked by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
The convertible top stops when opening or closing.
– Check the instrument cluster display for information on what to do ⇒ table
– Pull the button ⇒ fig. 33 to completely close and latch the convertible top. – If the convertible top does not close completely and latch, try to close and latch it using the emergency closing procedure – Get professional help if necessary and have the system checked by an authorized Volkswagen dealer, an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility, or another qualified workshop.

When the ignition is switched on, several warning and indicator lights come on briefly for a function check. They go out after a few seconds.
Display
Different cruise control versions are available. The stored speed is shown in the instrument cluster display on some equipment versions.
WARNING
Failure to heed warning lights and instrument cluster text messages can cause the vehicle to break down in traffic and result in a collision and serious personal injury.
x Never ignore warning lights or text WARNINGS.
x Always stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.
