The Intelligent Key system canoperate theignition
switch without takingthekey outfrom yourpocket or
bag. Theoperating environment and/orconditions may
affect theIntelligent Key system operation. Some
indicators andwarnings foroperation aredisplayed
on the vehicle information displayand/orinthe meter.

CAUTION:
. Besure tocarry theIntelligent Keywith you
when operating thevehicle.
. Never leavetheIntelligent Keyinside the
vehicle whenyouleave thevehicle. .
Ifthe vehicle battery isdischarged, the
ignition switchcannot beswitched from
the ªLOCKº position, andifthe steering lock
is engaged, thesteering wheelcannot be
moved. Chargethebattery assoon as
possible. (SeeªJump startingº (P.6-8) .)

The Intelligent Key can only beused forstarting the
engine whentheIntelligent Key iswithin thespecified
operating range

When theIntelligent Key battery isalmost discharged
or strong radiowaves arepresent neartheoperating
location, theIntelligent Key system's operating range
becomes narrowerandmay notfunction properly.
If the Intelligent Key iswithin theoperating range,itis
possible foranyone, evensomeone whodoes notcarry
the Intelligent Key ,to push theignition switchtostart
the engine.
. The luggage roomareaisnot included inthe
operating range,buttheIntelligent Keymay
function.
. Ifthe Intelligent Key isplaced onthe instrument
panel, insidetheglove box,door pocket orthe
corner ofthe interior compartment, theIntelligent K
ey may notfunction.
. Ifthe Intelligent Key isplaced nearthedoor or
window outsidethevehicle, theIntelligent Key
may function.

The ignition lockisdesigned sothat theignition switch
cannot beswitched tothe ªLOCKº position untilthe
shift lever ismoved tothe ªPº (Park) position.
When theignition switchcannot beswitched tothe
ªL OCKº position:
1. ªShift toParkº warning appears onthe vehicle
information displayandachime sounds.
2. Move theshift lever tothe ªPº (Park) position.
3. Push theignition switch.Theignition switchis
switched tothe ªOFFº position.
4. Open thedoor. Theignition switchturnstothe
ªL OCKº position.
For warnings andindicators onthe vehicle information
display ,see ªVehicle information displayº(P.2-20) .
If the ignition switchisswitched tothe ªLOCKº
position, theshift lever cannot bemoved fromtheªPº
(Park) position. Theshift lever canbemoved ifthe
ignition switchisin the ªONº position withthefoot
brake pedaldepressed.
