CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE
TRANSMISSION (CVT) (if so
equipped)
WARNING
●Do not depress the accelerator pedal
while shifting from P (Park) or N (Neu-
tral) to R (Reverse) , D (Drive) or L (Low) .
Always depress the brake pedal until
shifting is completed. Failure to do so
could cause you to lose control and
have an accident.
● Cold engine idle speed is high, so use
caution when shifting into a forward or
reverse gear before the engine has
warmed up.
● Do not downshift abruptly on slippery
roads. This may cause a loss of control.
● Never shift to P (Park) or R (Reverse)
while the vehicle is moving. This could
cause an accident.
CAUTION
● Except in an emergency, do not shift to
the N (Neutral) position while driving.
Coasting with the transmission in the N
(Neutral) position may cause serious
damage to the transmission.
● When stopping the vehicle on an uphill
grade, do not hold the vehicle by de-
pressing the accelerator pedal. The foot
brake should be used for this purpose.
The CVT in your vehicle is electronically con-
trolled to produce maximum power and smooth
operation.
The recommended operating procedures for this
transmission are shown on the following pages.
Follow these procedures for maximum vehicle
performance and driving enjoyment.
NOTE:
Engine power may be automatically re-
duced to protect the CVT if the engine
speed increases quickly when driving on
slippery roads or while being tested on
some dynamometers.
Starting the vehicle
1. After starting the engine, fully depress the foot brake pedal before moving the shift
lever out of the P (Park) position.
2. Keep the foot brake pedal depressed and move the shift lever into a driving gear.
3. Release the foot brake, then gradually start the vehicle in motion.
4. Stop the vehicle completely before shifting the shift lever to the P (Park) position.
The CVT is designed so the foot brake
pedal MUST be depressed before shifting
from P (Park) to any drive position while
the ignition switch is in the ON position.
The shift lever cannot be moved out of P
(Park) and into any of the other gear posi-
tions if the ignition switch is turned to the
LOCK or OFF position or if the key is re-
moved.
DRIVING THE VEHICLE
5-16Starting and driving
Adjusts the throttle sensitivity and transmission
points (CVT only) to enhance performance. Press
the SPORT button on the instrument panel to
activate. The SPORT mode indicator light (on the
speedometer) will illuminate. The SPORT mode
indicator light will remain lit while the mode is
active.
NOTE:
In the SPORT mode, fuel economy may be
reduced. The ECO mode helps to enhance the fuel
economy by controlling the throttle sensitivity and
transmission points (CVT if so equipped) .
To turn on the ECO mode, push the ECO mode
switch. The ECO mode indicator light (on the
speedometer) will remain lit while the mode is
active.
To turn off the ECO mode, push the ECO mode
switch again. The ECO mode indicator light (on
the speedometer) will turn off.The ECO mode cannot be turned off while the
accelerator pedal is depressed, even if the ECO
mode switch is pushed to OFF. Release the
accelerator pedal to turn off the ECO mode.
The ECO mode will turn off automatically if a
malfunction occurs in the system.
Turn off the ECO mode, or depress the accelera-
tor pedal fully when:
● driving with a heavy load of passengers or
cargo in the vehicle
● driving on a steep uphill slope
● ECO mode may affect air conditioner perfor-
mance
NOTE:
Selecting this drive mode will not necessar-
ily improve fuel economy as many driving
factors influence its effectiveness.
