When the selector lever cannot be shifted from the “P” (PARK) position to anotherposition while the brake pedal is pressed andheld down with the ignition switch at the “ON” position, the battery may be flat or the shift-lock mechanism may be malfunction-ing. Immediately have your vehicle checked by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice. If you need to move the vehicle, shift the selector lever as follows.
1. Make sure the parking brake is fully applied. 2. Stop the engine if it is running. 3. Insert a screwdriver with a cloth over itstip into the notch (A) of the cover. Pry gently as shown to remove the cover. 4. Depress the brake pedal with the right foot.5. Turn the ignition switch to the “ACC”position.
6. Insert a screwdriver in the shift-lock release hole (B). Shift the selector lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position while pressing the screwdriver down.

NOTE
 To ensure proper transmission operation, stop at each detent position when shifting. After shifting, check the position in the multi-information display.  If the brake pedal is not depressed and held, the shift-lock device activates to prevent the selector lever from being moved from the“P” (PARK) position.  For a shift indicated by in the illustration, depress the brake pedal before moving the selector lever. If you attempt to move theselector lever before depressing the brake pedal, the selector lever will be immovable.

This system, like any other system, has limits and cannot help you to maintain traction and control of thevehicle in all circumstances. Reckless driv- ing can lead to accidents. It is the driver’s responsibility to drive carefully. This meanstaking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use tires that are the same speci- fied size, type, and brand, and have no differ- ence in the amount of wear for all fourwheels. Otherwise, the ACD may not work properly.NOTE
 If the parking brake lever is pulled up while the vehicle is moving, the center differential is designed to switch to a free state condition which will allow the rear wheel to lock eas-ier.

Several rec- ommendations for achieving the greatest fuel economy are listed below.  Whenever accelerating from a stop, always accelerate slowly and smoothly. When parked for even a short period, do not idle the engine. Replace your tires before they are heavily worn out. As your vehicle is equipped with a tire pres- sure monitoring system, there is a risk ofdamage to the tire inflation pressure sensors when the tire is replaced on the rim. Tire replacement should, therefore, be performedonly by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Have someone watch while you turn all the exterior lights on and off. Also check the turn signal indicators and high-beam indicators on the instrument panel. Check the ground under the vehicle after parking overnight, for fuel, water, oil, orother leaks. Make sure all the fluid levels are correct. Also, if you can smell fuel, you need to find out why immediately and have itfixed.

following terms:  Cold tire pressure: • The measured pressure after the vehiclehas been parked for at least three hours, or • The measured pressure when the vehicleis driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) after having been parked for three hours.
 Maximum inflation pressure: the maxi- mum permissible cold tire inflation pres- sure for this tire.
 Recommended inflation pressure: the inflation pressure for optimum tire perfor- mance.  Intended outboard sidewall: • The sidewall that contains a whitewall, bears white lettering or bears manufac- turer, brand, and/or model name moldingthat is higher or deeper than the same molding on the other sidewall of the tire, or• The outward facing sidewall of an asym-metrical tire that has a particular side that must always face outward when mounted on a vehicle.
 Passenger car tire: a tire intended for use on passenger cars, multipurpose passen- ger vehicles, and trucks, that have a grossvehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,000 pounds or less.  Light truck (LT) tire: a tire designated by its manufacturer as primarily intended for use on lightweight trucks or multipurpose passenger vehicles. Tread: portion of a tire that comes into contact with the road.  Tread rib: a tread section running circum- ferentially around a tire.  Tread separation: pulling away of the tread from the tire carcass. Carcass: the tire structure, except tread and sidewall rubber which, when inflated, bears the load.
 Battery terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds. Wash hands after handling. NOTE
 Check each battery terminal for corrosion. You can stop more corrosion by washing with a solution of baking soda and water.Grease the posts and clamps after cleaning or tightening them.  Check to see that the battery is securely installed and cannot be moved. Also check each terminal for tightness.  If you will not be driving your vehicle for a long period of time, remove the battery andstore it in a place where the battery fluid will not freeze. Memory data for settings made by the user may be erased when the battery isremoved. If this happens, reset the settings again using the relevant procedures. The bat- tery only should be stored with a full charge.  Before cleaning the battery, tighten all the filler port caps to keep dirt and moisture out.WA R N I N G

These type tire conditions will adversely affect vehicle performance.These type tire conditions can also cause a tread separation or blowout which may result in an accident causing seriousinjury or death. Tires, including spare tire, degrade over time with age even when they are not being used. It is recommended that tires over 6 years generally be replaced even ifdamage is not obvious.
