Do not operate your vehicle on gasoline con- taining methanol (wood alcohol). Using thistype of alcohol could adversely affect the vehicle’s performance and damage critical parts of the vehicle’s fuel system. Many areas of the country require the use of cleaner burning fuel referred to as “Reformu- lated Gasoline”.Reformulated gasoline contains oxygenates and is specially blended to reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality.Mitsubishi Motors Cor
poration strongly sup-
ports the use of reformulated gasoline. Prop- erly blended reformulated gasoline has noadverse effect on vehicle performance or the durability of the engine and fuel system. MMT is a manganese-containing metallic additive that is blended into some gasolinesto increase the octane number. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation recommends using gasolines without MMT.
Use of gasolines blended with MMT may adversely affect performance, and cause the malfunction indicator on your instrument panel to come on. If this happens, contact anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance. Your vehicle may have been designed to sat- isfy California’s low-emission regulations based on clean-burning low-sulfur gasoline. Gasoline sold in parts of the country otherthan California is allowed to have a higher sulfur content. Using such gasoline could adversely affect the vehicle’s catalytic con-verter and cause the engine malfunction indi- cator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “CHECK ENGINE”) to come on. Illumina-tion of this indicator while you are using high-sulfur gasoline does not necessarily mean the vehicle’s emis
sion-control system is
malfunctioning. Your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer may suggest you try using a different, lower-sulfur brand of unleaded gas-oline to determine whether the problem is fuel-related.

abnormal engine noise, and poor accelera- tion. If you experience any of these prob- lems, try using a different brand of gasoline.If the engine malfunction indicator (“SER- VICE ENGINE SOON” or “CHECK ENGINE”) flashes, have the vehicleinspected as soon as possible by the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. Repeatedly driving short distances at low speeds can cause deposits to form in the fuelsystem and engine, resulting in poor starting and poor acceleration. If these problems occur, you are advised to add a detergentadditive to the gasoline when you refuel the vehicle. The additive will remove the depos- its, thereby returning the engine to a normalcondition. Be sure to use a Mitsubishi Motors Genuine cleaning additive. Using an unsuitable additive could make the enginemalfunction. For details, please contact the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.

Regularly check your seat belt buckles and their release mechanisms for positive engage- ment and release of the latch plate. Check the retractors for automatic locking when in theAutomatic Locking Retractor function. The entire seat belt assembly should be replaced if the webbing shows any obvious cuts, tears, increase in thickness in any sec-tion of the webbing from broken fibers, or severe fading from sunlight. All of these con- ditions indicate a weakening of the belt,which may adversely affect seat belt perfor-mance in an accident.

This vehicle is equipped with a SupplementalRestraint System (SRS), which includes air-bags for the driver and passengers.
The SRS front airbags are designed to supple- ment the primary protection of the driver and front passenger seat belt systems by provid- ing those occupants with protection againsthead and chest injuries in certain moderate to severe frontal collisions. The SRS front airbags, together with sensorsat the front of the vehicle and sensors attached to the front seats, form an advanced airbag system. The SRS driver’s knee airbag is designed to supplement the primary protection of thedriver’s seat belt system. It can reduce the forward movement of the driver’s lower legs and provide increased overall body protectionin certain moderate to severe frontal colli- sions. The SRS side airbags (if so equipped) and the curtain airbags (if so equipped) are alsodesigned to supplement the seat belts. The SRS side airbags provide the driver and front passenger with protection against chest inju-ries by deploying the bag on the side impacted in moderate to severe side impact collisions. The SRS curtain airbags providethe driver and passengers on the front seat and rear outboard seat with protection against head injuries by deploying a bag on the sideimpacted in moderate to severe side impact collisions.
The SRS airbags are NOT
a substitute for use
of the seat belts. For maximum protection in all types of accidents, seat belts must ALWAYS be worn by everyone who drives orrides in this vehicle (with infants and small children in an appropriate child restraint sys- tem in the rear seat, and older children buck-led in the rear seat). Refer to “Child restraint systems” on page 4-14.
WA R N I N G Do not attempt to repair or replace any part of the seat belt assemblies. This work should be done by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Failure to havean authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer perform the work could reduce the effec- tiveness of the belts and could result in aserious injury or death in an accident.

WA R N I N G IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT PROPERLY EVEN WITH AN AIRBAG.• Seat belts help keep the driver and pas-sengers properly positioned. This reduces the risk of injury in all collisions,and reduces the risk of serious injuries or death when the airbags inflate. During sudden braking just before a col-lision, an unrestrained or improperly restrained driver or passengers can move forward into direct contact with, orwithin close proximity to, the airbag when it begins to inflate. The beginning stage of airbag inflation isthe most forceful and can cause serious injuries or death if the occupant comes in contact with the airbag at this time. • Seat belts reduce the risk of injury inrollovers, rear impact collisions, and in lower-speed frontal collisions, because the airbags are not designed to inflate inthose situations.

left. The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag are designed to deploy only in certain moderate to severe frontal collisions within the shadedarea between the arrows in the illustration to the right.
The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag will deploy if the impact to the vehicle’s main structure is above a specific threshold level. The threshold level is approximately 15 mph(25 km/h) for a frontal collision straight into a solid flat wall that does not bend or deform. If the impact to the vehicle’s main structure isbelow this threshold level, the front airbags and driver’s knee airbag may not deploy. This threshold level may also be higher if the vehi-cle hits something that absorbs the impact, either by bending or moving (for example,
another stationary vehicle, a pole or a guard rail). The beginning stage of airbag inflation is the most forceful, and can cause serious injuriesor death if you are too close to the deploying airbag. Accordingly, it is important that you always wear the available seat belt.

Advanced automobile manufacturing tech- niques permit you to operate your new vehi-cle without requiring a long break-in period of low-speed driving. However, you can add to the future perfor-mance and economy of your vehicle by observing the following precautions during the first 300 miles (500 km).Drive your vehicle at moderate speeds duringthe break-in period. Avoid revving the engine. For vehicles with turbocharger, do not exceed 5,000 rpm for the first 600 miles (1,000 km). Avoid rough driving such as fast starts, sudden acceleration, prolonged high- speed driving and sudden braking. Thesewould have a detrimental effect on the engine and also cause increased fuel and oil consumption, which could result inmalfunction of the engine components. Be particularly careful to avoid full accelera- tion while in low gear. Do not overload the vehicle. Observe the seating capacity (See “Cargo load precau- tions” on page 6-11). Do not use this vehicle for trailer towing.

If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to “Jump-starting the engine” on page 8-2 for instructions. A longer warm up period will only con- sume extra fuel. The engine is warmed up enough for driving when the bar graph ofthe engine coolant temperature display starts to move. Refer to “Interrupt display screen (With ignition
switch in the “ON”
position)” on page 5-121. On vehicles equipped with the Twin Clutch SST, the following may occur after the engine is started, but they do not indi-cate an abnormality. • You may hear operational sounds of the Twin Clutch SST and you may feelvibration in the vehicle body. • If you shift the gearshift lever into the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and depressthe accelerator pedal, increases in the engine speed will be limited.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system. This isa system that automatically controls fuel injection. There is no need to depress the accelerator pedal when starting the engine.The starter motor should not be run for more than 15 seconds at a time. To prevent battery drain, wait a few secondsbetween attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened. 2. Press and hold the brake pedal down withyour right foot.
3. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual transaxle). 4. On vehicles with manual transaxle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral)position.On vehicles with continuously variable transmission (CVT) or Twin Clutch SST, make sure the selector lever (CVT) or thegearshift lever (Twin Clutch SST) is in the “P” (PARK) position.

Starting the engine

For models equipped with a manual trans- axle, the starter will not operate unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed (Clutch inter-lock). This is a safety feature.NOTE
On vehicles with CVT, the starter will not operate unless the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position. On vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, thestarter will not operate unless the gearshift lever is in the “P” (P

gearshift lever is in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position with the brake pedal depressed. For safety reasons, start the engine in the “P”(PARK) position so that the wheels are locked.
