Do not modify your front seats, center pil- lar or center console. Such modifications can adversely affect SRS performance and may lead to injury. Also, if you discover any tear or openseam in the seat fabric near the side air- bag, have the seat inspected by an autho- rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. If you find a crack in or damage to the front pillar, rear pillar, or roof side railwhere the curtain airbag is located, have the SRS inspected by an authorized Mit- subishi Motors dealer.NOTE
When you transfer ownership of the vehicle to another person, we urge you to alert the new owner that it is equipped with the SRS and refer that owner to the applicable sec-tions in this owner’s manual. If you decide to junk or scrap your vehicle, we urge you to first take
it to an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer so that the SRS can be made safe for disposal. If any of the following parts needs to be modified for use by a handicapped person, the advanced airbag system will be greatly affected. Only keys that have been programmed to the vehicle’s electronics can be used to start the vehicle. If you lose the key, you can order a key from your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer by referring to the key number. To prevent vehicle theft, the ID code for thevehicle keys must be changed. Take your vehicle and all remaining keys to your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer tohave your ID code changed. To add a key, you need to register the ID code to the vehicle. Registering the ID code can be done by your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Or itcan be done by yourself (except for vehicles sold in Canada).
NOTE
Do not attach additional keys or accessories to the ignition key. Such objects could pre- vent the driver’s knee airbag from inflating normally. Refer to “Deployment of front air- bags” on page 4-29. In the following cases, the vehicle may not be able to recognize the registered ID codefrom the key. This means the engine will not start even when the key is turned to the “START” position. • When the key contacts a key ring or other metallic or magnetic object (Type A) • When the key grip contacts metal of another key (Type B) • When the key contacts or is close to other immobilizer keys (including keys of othervehicles) (Type C)
In cases like the above, move the offending object(s) away from the key and turn the key back to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position. Then try to start the
engine again. If the
engine does not start, contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.

The key may not operate properly when it is near an object or facility that emits strong electromagnetic waves. Electronic immobilizer is not compatible with commercially available remote startingsystems. Use of commercially available remote starting systems may result in vehicle starting problems and a lo
ss of security pro-
tection. A system failure is suspected when the igni- tion switch is turned to the “START” posi- tion, and the engine does not start. In such a case, contact an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer.NOTE

4. Insert the F.A.S.T.-key into the emergency key. 5. Press and hold the brake pedal down with your right foot. 6. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the waydown (manual transaxle).
7. On vehicles with manual transaxle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position. On vehicles with CVT or Twin ClutchSST, make sure the selector lever (CVT) or the gearshift lever (Twin Clutch SST) is in the “P” (PARK) position. 8. Turn the emergency key with the F.A.S.T.-key to the “ON” position andmake certain that all warning lights and warning displays are functioning properly before starting the engine.9. Turn the emergency key with the F.A.S.T.-key to the “START” position without pressing the accelerator pedal.Release the emergency key with the F.A.S.T.-key when the engine starts.
10. Remove the F.A.S.T.-key from the emer-
gency key.
NOTE
For models equipped with a manual trans- axle, the starter will
not operate unless the
clutch pedal is fully depressed (Clutch inter- lock). This is a safety feature.
NOTE
On vehicles with continuously variable transmission (CVT) or Twin Clutch SST, the starter will not operate unless the selector lever (CVT) or the gearshift lever (TwinClutch SST) is in the “P” (PARK) position or the selector lever (CVT) or the gearshift lever (Twin Clutch SST) is in the “N” (NEU-TRAL) position with the brake pedal depressed. For safety reasons, start the engine in the “P”(PARK) position so that the wheels are locked.
NOTE
Minor noises may be heard on engine start- up. These will disappear as the engine warms up. WA R N I N G Make sure to remove the F.A.S.T.-key from the emergency key after the engine is started.If not removed, the F.A.S.T.-key could fall to the floor, which may interfere with pedal operation.Furthermore, the F.A.S.T.-key could pre- vent the driver’s knee airbag from inflat- ing normally or could be propelled tocause serious injury if the airbag inflates.NOTE
When using the emergency key to start the engine, first remove the key from the key holder. If the emergency key is attached to a key holder (key ring), it may become impos-sible to insert the keyless operation key into the emergency key, and it may prevent the engine from being started.

The vehicle is being driven with the parking brake still applied.

There is a fault in the engine oil circula- tion system.

If the cur- tain airbag was activated, any such item could be propelled away with great force and could prevent the curtain airbag frominflating correctly. Hang clothes directly on the coat hook (without using a hanger). Make sure there are no heavy or sharpobjects in the pockets of clothes that you hang on the coat hook.

Check the fluid level in the reservoir while the engine is idling. Check to make certain that the power steering fluid level is always between the “MAX” and“MIN” level markings on the fluid reservoirand refill the fluid, if necessary.

WA R N I N G An SRS airbag sensor is located in the front of the engine compartment near the battery. When checking or replacing the battery,or when working around this area, do not strike or damage this sensor.

1. Open the fuse lid and pull to remove it. 2. For vehicles with the bottom cover, use the puller to loosen the 2 clips (A) and push down the bottom cover. The puller is in the fuse block in the engine compart-ment. Refer to “Fuse replacement” on page 9-32.
3. To put back the fuse lid, line up the fuse lid hook (B) with the clamp (C) on theinstrument panel and push the lid back in.
In the engine compartment, the fuse block is located as shown in the illustration. 1. Push the lock lever. 2. Remove the fuse block cover.

This fuse list shows the names of the electri- cal systems and their fuse capacities. There are spare fuses in the cover of the fuseblock in the engine compartment. Always replace a blown fuse with one of the same capacity as the original.
WA R N I N G When changing fuses, do not damage the driver’s knee airbag harness or acciden- tally strike the airbag area with hard objects. Improper work methods could result in an accidental driver’s knee air-bag deployment or could make the driver’s knee airbag inoperable. Either of these situations could result in seriousinjury or death.NOTE
When finished, be sure to return the puller to the fuse block in the engine compartment.
