Remove the key at the “LOCK” position. Turn the steering wheel until it is locked. Turn the key to the “ACC” position while moving the steering wheel slightly.

Do not operate the starter motor continu- ously for longer than 15 seconds as thiscould run the battery down or damage the starter motor. If the engine does not start, turn the ignition switch back to the“LOCK” position, wait a few seconds, and then try again. Trying repeatedly with the engine or starter motor still turningwill damage the starter mechanism. If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to“Jump-starting the engine” (on page 8-2) for instructions.
If the engine is turned off while driving, the power brake booster will stop functioning and braking efficiency will be reduced. Also, the power steering system will not function and it will require greater effort to manuallysteer the vehicle. Do not leave the key in the “ON” position for a long time when the engine is not running. This will cause the battery to run down. Do not turn the key to the “START” position when the engine is running. It will damage the starter motor.

CAUTION Remove the key when leaving the vehicle.
NOTE
If the front wheels are turned, the anti-theft lock may sometimes make it difficult to turn the key from “LOCK” position to “ACC” position. Firmly turn the steering wheel to the left or to the right as you turn the key.

There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine. The starter should not be run for more than 15 seconds at a time.To prevent battery drain, wait a few seconds between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened 2. Insert the ignition key. 3. Make sure the parking brake is applied.4. Press and hold the brake pedal down withyour right foot. 5. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual transaxle).
WA R N I N G Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated area any longer than is needed to move your vehicle out of the area. Car- bon monoxide gas, which is odorless and extremely poisonous, could build up andcause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine
at high rpms or drive
at high speeds until the engine has had a chance to warm up. Release the ignition switch as soon as the engine starts. Otherwise, the starter motorwill be damaged.

For models equipped with a manual trans- axle, the starter will not operate unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed (Clutch inter-lock). This is a safety feature.

When the selector lever cannot be shifted from the “P” (PARK) position to anotherposition while the brake pedal is pressed andheld down with the ignition switch at the “ON” position, the battery may be flat or the shift-lock mechanism may be malfunction-ing. Immediately have your vehicle checked by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice. If you need to move the vehicle, shift the selector lever as follows.
1. Make sure the parking brake is fully applied. 2. Stop the engine if it is running. 3. Insert a screwdriver with a cloth over itstip into the notch (A) of the cover. Pry gently as shown to remove the cover. 4. Depress the brake pedal with the right foot.5. Turn the ignition switch to the “ACC”position.
6. Insert a screwdriver in the shift-lock release hole (B). Shift the selector lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position while pressing the screwdriver down.

When the ignition switch is turned to the“ON” position, the selector lever position is shown on the multi-information display.
NOTE
To ensure proper transmission operation, stop at each detent position when shifting. After shifting, check the position in the multi-information display. If the brake pedal is not depressed and held, the shift-lock device activates to prevent the selector lever from being moved from the“P” (PARK) position. For a shift indicated by in the illustration, depress the brake pedal before moving the selector lever. If y

When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position, operate the AWC switch to change the control mode. Each time the switch is pushed, the control mode changes in the order “TARMAC”
“GRAVEL”
“SNOW”
“TARMAC”.
Example: “TARMAC” mode is selected. The currently selected control mode is dis- played on the multi-information display.
In addition, when the control mode is changed, the selected mode appears on the interrupt display screen of the information screen in the multi-information display.The control mode display will appear on the information screen for a few seconds, and then the original screen will return.

When there is a malfunction in the system, the warning display will appear on the information screen in the multi-information display. In addition, the ACD control mode display insection (A) will go out at the same time.

The control mode can be changed while the vehicle is moving. The selected control mode is stored in mem- ory even if the engine is stopped. However, if a battery terminal is discon-nected, the control mode stored in memory will be erased and the control mode will be set to the “TARMAC” mode.

CAUTION The ACD control mode display may flash under aggressive driving conditions.At this time, ACD control is temporarily sus- pended in order to protect the ACD device, but this will not affect normal driving.After the vehicle is driven for a while, if the ACD control mode display remains on, the ACD control will start operating again.

This indicator will come on when the cruise control “ON OFF” switch (A) is pressed to turn on the cruise control system.

1. Lightly press the “ON OFF” switch (A).
2. Confirm that the Twin Clutch SST control mode is set to “Normal” (on vehicles with Twin Clutch SST). Refer to “Twin Clutch SST control mode”on page 5-76. 3. Accelerate or decelerate to your desired speed, then press and release the “COAST SET” switch (B) when the “CRUISE”indicator light is illuminated. The vehicle will then maintain the desired speed.

When operating the cruise control switches, correctly press each cruise control switch.The cruise control may be turned off auto- matically if two or more of the cruise control switches are pressed at the same time.

If the cruise control is on when the ignition switch is turned to “OFF” position, cruise control will turn on automatically and the “CRUISE” control indicator will illuminatethe next time you start the engine. If the battery voltage is insufficient, the memory data for the cruise control will be erased. As a result, the “CRUISE” control indicator may not come on when you restartthe engine. If this happens, press the “ON OFF” switch once again to activate the cruise control.Type 1 Type 2

If the tire pressure monitoring system warning light remains illuminated after you have been driving for about 20 min-utes after you adjust the tire inflation pres- sure, one or more of the tires may have a puncture. Inspect the tire and if it has apuncture, have it repaired by an autho- rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer as soon as possible.
The tire pressure monitoring system may not work normally in the following circum- stances: A wireless facility or device using the same frequency is near the vehicle. Snow or ice is stuck inside the fenders and/or on the wheels. The tire inflation pressure sensor’s battery is dead. Wheels other than Mitsubishi genuine wheels are being used. Wheels that are not fitted with tire infla- tion pressure sensors are being used. Wheels whose ID co
des are not memo-
rized by the vehicle are used. Compact spare tire is fitted on a road wheel. A window tint that affects the radio wave signals is installed.
When inspecting or adjusting the tire pres- sure, do not apply excessive force to the valve stem to avoid breakage. After inspecting or adjusting the tire pres- sure, always reinstall the valve cap on the valve stem. Without the valve cap, dirt or moisture couldget into the valve, resulting in damage to the tire inflation pressure sensor. Do not use metal valve caps, which may cause a metal reaction, resulting in corrosion and damage of the tire inflation pressure sen-sors. Once adjustments have been made, the warn- ing light will go off after a few minutes of driving.NOTE
WA R N I N G If the warning light/display illuminates while you are driving, avoid hard braking, sharp steering maneuvers and high speeds. Driving with an under-inflated tire adversely affects vehicle performance andcan result in an accident.CAUTION If a tire has a puncture, replace that tire with the spare tire. Driving on a punctured tirecould lead to an accident. The warning light/displ

immediately in the event of a tire blowout or rapid leak.NOTE
To avoid the risk of damage to the tire infla- tion pressure sensors, have any punctured tire repaired by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. If the tire repair is not done byan authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer, it is not covered by your warranty. Do not use an aerosol puncture-repair prod- uct on any tire. Such a spray could damagethe tire inflation pressure sensors. Have any puncture repaired by an authorized Mitsubi- shi Motors dealer.
NOTE
Tire inflation pressures vary with the ambi- ent temperature. If the vehicle is subjected to large variations in ambient temperature, the tire inflation pressures may be under-inflated (causing the warning light/display to come on) when the ambient temperature is rela-tively low. If the warning light/display comes on, adjust the tire inflation pressure.

When there is information to be announced,such as a key reminder, the buzzer sounds and switches to the warning display screen. Refer to the appropriate page and take the necessarymeasures. When the cause of the warning display is eliminated, the warning display goes outautomatically.
It is possible to measure two currently traveled distances, from home using trip odometer and from a particular pointon the way using trip odometer . To reset the trip odometer: To return the display to 0, hold down the multi-information meter switch for about2 seconds or more. Only the currently dis- played value will be reset. Example: If trip odometer is displayed, only tripodometer will be reset.

Both trip odometers and can count up to 9999.9 miles/kilometers. When a trip odometer goes past 9999.9 miles/kilometers, it returns to 0.0 miles/kilo-meters. When the battery is disconnected, the memo- ries of trip odometer displays and are cleared, and their displays return to “0.0 miles/kilometers”.

When the average speed is being dis- played, if you hold down the multi-infor- mation meter switch, the average speed displayed at that time is reset. When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position from the “ACC” or “LOCK” position, the mode settingchanges automatically from manual to auto. Switching to auto occurs automatically. Ifswitching to manual mode is done, how-ever, the data from the last reset is dis- played. When the average speed is being dis- played, if you hold down the multi-infor-mation meter switch, these calculations will be reset to zero. When the ignition switch has been set to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position for about 4 hours or more, the average speed dis- play will automatically reset.
This displays the average fuel consumption from the last reset to the present. There are 2 types of mode settings as follows.For details on how to change the average fuel consumption display setting, refer to “Chang- ing the function settings (With ignition switchin the “ON” position)” on page 5-126. The “ ” mark in the momentary fuel gauge shows the average fuel consumption. (Type 2)
When the average fuel consumption is being displayed, if you hold down the multi-information meter switch, the aver- age fuel consumption displayed at thattime is reset. When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position from the “ACC” or“LOCK” position, the mode setting changes automatically from manual to auto. Switching to auto occurs automatically. “---” is displayed when the average speed cannot be measured. The initial (default) setting is “Auto reset mode”. The display setting can be changed to the preferred units (mph or km/h).Refer to “Changing the function settings (With ignition switch in the “ON” position)” on page 5-126. The average speed display memories for auto reset mode and manual reset mode are erasedif the battery is disconnected.
