WARNING
The reversing feature does not react:
R to soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small
fingers
R over the last 1/3 in(8 mm) of the closing
movement
This means that the reversing feature cannot
prevent someone being trapped in these
situations. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure.
If somebody becomes trapped:
R press the 0054button on the SmartKey, or
R press the remote operating switch on the
driver's door, or
R press the closing or locking button on the
trunk lid, or
R pull on the trunk lid handle Opening/closing from outside

Press the 0036button on the SmartKey.
X Pull handle 0043.
X Raise the trunk lid. Closing X
Pull the trunk lid down using recess 0043.
X Lock the vehicle if necessary with
the 0037 button on the SmartKey or with
KEYLESS-GO.
i If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
trunk, the trunk lid cannot be locked and
will open again. Opening automatically from outside

The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.

Opening You can automatically open the trunk lid
using the handle in the trunk lid.

If the trunk lid is unlocked, pull the trunk lid
handle and let it go again immediately.
Vehicles with the trunk lid remote closing
feature: the trunk lid can also be opened
automatically with the SmartKey.
X Press and hold the 0054button on the
SmartKey until the trunk lid opens. 80

Locking the trunk separately
You can lock the trunk separately. If you then
unlock the vehicle centrally, the trunk
remains locked and cannot be opened.
X Close the trunk lid.
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 72). 0047
Basic position
0048 To lock
X Insert the mechanical key into the trunk lid
lock as far as it will go.
X Turn the mechanical key clockwise from
position 0047to position 0048.
X Remove the mechanical key.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey. Unlocking the trunk (mechanical key)
! The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.
If the trunk cannot be unlocked with the
SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO, use the
mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the trunk lid, the anti-theft alarm system
will be triggered ( Ypage 67).
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 72).
X Insert the mechanical key into the trunk lid
lock as far as it will go. 0047
Basic position
0048 To unlock
X Turn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
as far as it will go from position 0047to
position 0048.
X Pull the trunk lid handle.
The trunk is unlocked.
X Turn the mechanical key back to position
0047 and remove it.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
i When you lock the vehicle ( Ypage 78),
the trunk is also locked. Trunk emergency release
You can unlock the trunk lid from the inside
with the emergency release button. X
Press emergency release button 0043briefly.
The trunk lid unlocks and opens.
The trunk lid can be unlocked with the trunk
lid emergency release when the vehicle is
stationary or while driving. Trunk

The trunk lid emergency release does not
unlock the trunk lid if the battery is
disconnected or discharged.
Trunk lid emergency release light:
R emergency release button 0043flashes for
30 minutes after the trunk lid is opened

WARNING
While opening the side windows, body parts
could become trapped between the side
window and the door frame as the side
window moves. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody touches the side
window during the opening procedure. If
somebody becomes trapped, release the
switch or pull the switch to close the side
window again. G

While opening the side windows, body parts
in the closing area could become trapped.
There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure. If
somebody becomes trapped, release the
switch or press the switch to open the side
window again. G
WARNING
If children operate the side windows they
could become trapped, particularly if they are
left unsupervised. There is a risk of injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle. Side window reversing feature
The side windows are equipped with an
automatic reversing feature. If a solid object
blocks or restricts a side window during the
closing process, the side window opens again
automatically. However, the automatic
reversing feature is only an aid and does not
relieve you of the responsibility of paying
attention when closing a side window. G

windows in the front
The switches for the front side windows are
located on the driver's door. There is also a
switch for the front-passenger side window
on the front-passenger door.
The switches on the driver's door take

there is sufficient clearance, as the roof
swings upwards.
R there is sufficient clearance behind the
vehicle, as the trunk lid swings
backwards beyond the bumper.
R the trunk is only loaded to below the
trunk partition.
R the trunk partition is not pushed up by
the load.
R the trunk partition is closed.
R the trunk lid is closed.
R the outside temperature is above 5 ‡
(00F815 †).
You could otherwise damage the roof,
trunk and other parts of the vehicle.
i The vehicle's dimensions when opening/
closing the roof (Y page 350).
i Make sure that the roof and rear window
are clean and dry before opening the roof.
Otherwise, water or dirt could enter the

X To open: pull soft-top switch 0043until the
entire soft top is stowed away in the trunk.

message in the multifunction display. As
soon as the opening procedure has ended,
the message disappears and you hear a
tone.
All of the side windows open.
X To close: press and hold soft-top
switch 0043until the soft top is fully closed.

Opening and closing using the
SmartKey
Important safety notes G

When opening or closing the roof, body parts
could be trapped by, for example, the roof
mechanism, trunk lid or side windows. There
is a risk of injury.
When raising or lowering the roof, make sure
that no body parts are in the vicinity of moving
components. If someone becomes trapped,
release the button.

Close the trunk partition (Y page 88).
X Close the trunk lid (Y page 79).
X Vehicles without KEYLESS-GO: point the
tip of the SmartKey at the door handle on
the driver's door.
X Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: the
SmartKey must be within 6 ft (2 m) of the
vehicle.
X To open: press and hold the 0036button
on the SmartKey until the roof is fully
opened.
The roof and the rear side windows open.
The front side windows close.
X To interrupt the opening procedure:
release the 0036button.
X To open the front side windows: press
and hold the 0036button on the SmartKey
again.
X To close: press and hold the 0037button
on the SmartKey until the roof is fully
closed.
The roof and the side windows close.
X To interrupt the closing procedure:
release the 0037button.
i When the roof is closed and the trunk
partition is open, the roof cannot be
opened using the SmartKey functions.
Instead, all of the side windows open or
close simultaneously (Y page 83).Additionally, the
Trunk Partition Open Trunk Partition Open
message appears in the multifunction

WARNING
If you do not fully open/close the soft top, the
soft-top hydraulics depressurize after a short
time. This causes the soft top to lower
unexpectedly and may cause you or others to
be trapped. There is a risk of injury.
Always open or close the soft top completely.
The roof is not locked if:
R the 0059 symbol and the Vario-Roof Vario-Roofin
in
Operation
Operation message appear in the
multifunction display.
R the 0059 symbol and the Open/Close

Vario-Roof Completely message
appear and you hear a warning tone.
R you hear a warning tone for up to
10 seconds when pulling away or while
driving.
Locking You can lock the roof again if it is not locked
fully.

Pull over and stop the vehicle safely as soon
as possible, paying attention to road and
traffic conditions.
X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position
2in the ignition lock.

The following conditions must be fulfilled
for installation:

R latch 0087facing you is unlocked.
R latch 0044facing away from you is locked.
X To unlock the latch: press unlocking

X To lock the latch: push the unlocked latch
upwards by hand until it engages.

Stop the vehicle, paying attention to road
and traffic conditions.
X Take the wind screen out of the trunk.
X Prepare for installing (Y page 89).
X Hold wind screen 0043at an angle and slide
it with locked latch 0044in the direction of
arrow 0085into the bracket of the opposite
roll bar.
X Press wind screen 0043on the side of the
vehicle facing you downwards in the
direction of arrow 0083until it engages.
Make sure that studs 0084and latch 0087fit
into the respective brackets.
X Check whether wind screen 0043is fully
inserted into all four brackets and is sitting
securely.
X If this is not the case, remove wind
screen 0043again and repeat the steps

Stop the vehicle, paying attention to road
and traffic conditions.
X Press unlocking button L0043. Meanwhile,
pull wind screen 0044on the side of the
vehicle facing you upwards and tilt it. Removing from the left side of the vehicle

Pull wind screen 0044out of the bracket of
the opposite roll bar in the direction of the
arrow.
X Secure wind screen 0044to the trunk floor by
the rubber strips (Y page 256).90

Problems with the roof

Close the trunk partition (Y page 89). The trunk lid is open.

Close the trunk lid (Y page 80). The on-board voltage is too low.

Leave the engine running. The roof has been opened and closed several times in a row. The
roof drive has been automatically deactivated.
You can open and close the roof again after approximately ten
minutes.

Switch off the ignition and turn it back on.
X Repeat the opening or closing procedure. The automatic roof mechanism is faulty.

Consult a qualified specialist workshop. Roof

Engaging and releasing manually
X
To engage: push handle 0043.
When the electric parking brake is
engaged, the 0049(USA only) or 0024
(Canada only) red indicator lamp lights up
in the instrument cluster.
i The electric parking brake can also be
applied when the SmartKey is removed.
X To release: switch on the ignition.
X Pull handle 0043.
The red 0049(USA only) or 0024(Canada
only) indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster goes out.
i The electric parking brake can only be
released:
R if the SmartKey is in position 1in the
ignition lock or
R if the ignition was switched on using the
Start/Stop button.
Applying automatically The electric parking brake is applied
automatically:
R
if DISTRONIC PLUS brings the vehicle to a
standstill or
R if the HOLD function is keeping the vehicle
stationary
In addition, at least one of the following
conditions must be fulfilled: R
the engine is switched off.
R the driver's seat belt is not inserted in the
belt buckle and the driver's door is open.
R the vehicle is stationary for a lengthy
period.
The red 0049(USA only) or 0024(Canada
only) indicator lamp in the instrument cluster
lights up.
Releasing automatically The electric parking brake is released
automatically when all of the following
conditions are fulfilled:
R
the engine is running.
R the transmission is in position Dor R.
R the driver's seat belt is fastened.
R you depress the accelerator pedal.
If the transmission is in position R, the trunk
lid must be closed.
If your seat belt is not fastened, the following
conditions must be fulfilled to automatically
release the electric parking brake:
R the driver's door is closed.
R you have shifted out of Por you have
previously driven faster than 2 mph
(3 km/h).
i The electric parking brake can only be
released automatically on vehicles with
automatic transmission.
Emergency braking The vehicle can also be braked during an
emergency by using the electric parking
brake.
X
While driving, push handle 0043of the electric
parking brake.
i The vehicle is braked for as long as the
handle of the electric parking brake is
pressed. The longer the electric parking
brake handle is depressed, the greater the
