Lower soft-top compartment lid 001E.X
With yourh and flat, pres sdown the
material tensioning frame until it rests on
soft-top support 001Fof the soft-top
compartment lid.
X With your hand flat, press the soft-top
compartment cover forwards/downwards
on both sides simultaneously until it
engages in the guide. Apply your hands to
the points indicated with arrows.
At the same time, press the material
tensioning frame gently downwards with
your flat hand. X
Insert the Allen key into the roof lock.
X Turn the Allen key counter-clockwise 0024as
far as possible.
X Have the soft-top mechanism repaired
immediately at a specialist workshop.
i Press the soft-top compartment lid again
if the trunk lid cannot be opened.
! Do not under any circumstances open the
trunk lid with the emergency key. You could
otherwise damage the trunk lid and the
soft-top compartment cover. Relocking the soft top
Important safety notes G
WARNING
If you do not fully open/close the soft top, the
soft-top hydraulics depressurize after a short
time. This causes the soft top to lower
unexpectedly and may cause you or others to
be trapped. There is a risk of injury.
Always open or close the soft top completely.
The soft top is not locked if:
R the Convertible Top in Operation message appears in the multifunction
display.
R you hear a warning tone for up to ten
seconds when pulling away or while driving.
To lock You can lock the soft top again if it is not
locked fully.
X
Pull over and stop the vehicle safely as soon
as possible, paying attention to road and
traffic conditions.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X Press the soft-top switch (Y page 100). Soft top (Cabriolet)

To apply: depress parking brake 0003firmly.
Whe nthe engine is running, the 000B(USA
only) or 0005(Canada only) indicator lamp
lights up in the instrumentc luster.
X To release: depress the brake pedal and
keep it depressed.
X Pull release handle 0002.
When the ignition is switched on or the
engine is running, the 000B(USA only) or
0005 (Canada only) indicator lamp goes out
in the instrument cluster. Parking the vehicle for
along period
If you leave the vehicle parked for longer than
four weeks, the battery may be damaged by
exhaustive discharging.
If you leave the vehicle parked for longer than
six weeks, the vehicle may suffer damage as
a result of lack of use.
X Visit a qualified specialist workshop and
seek advice.

Important safety notes G
WARNING
If you switch off the ignitio nwhile driving,
safety-relevant functions are only available
with limitations, or not at all. This could affect,
for example, the power steering and the brake
boosting effect.Y ou will require considerably
more effort to steer and brake. There is a risk
of an accident.
Do not switch off the ignition while driving. G
WARNING
If you operate mobile communication
equipment while driving, you will be distracted from traffic conditions. You could
also lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk
of an accident.
Only operate this equipment when the vehicle
is stationary.
Observe the legal requirements for the
country in which you are driving. Some
jurisdictions prohibit the driver from using a
mobile phone while driving a vehicle.
If you make a call while driving, always use
hands-free mode. Only operate the telephone
when the traffic situation permits. If you are
unsure, pull over to a safe location and stop
before operating the telephone.
Bear in mind that at a speed of only 30 mph
(approximately 50 km/h), the vehicle covers
a distance of 44 ft (approximately 14 m) per
second.
Drive sensibly –save fuel Observe the following tips to save fuel:
X
The tires should always be inflated to the
recommended tire pressure.
X Remove unnecessary loads.
X Remove roof racks whe nthey are not
needed.
X Warm up the engine at low engine speeds.
X Avoid frequent acceleration or braking.
X Have all maintenance work carried out as
indicated by the service intervals in the
Maintenance Booklet or by the service
interval display.
Fuel consumption also increases when
driving in cold weather, in stop-start traffic
and in hilly terrain.

WARNING
Drinking and driving and/or taking drugs and
driving are very dangerous combinations.
Even a small amount of alcohol or drugs can
affect your reflexes, perceptions and
judgment. 184

Pay attention also to the importan
tsafety
notes for DISTRONIC PLUS (Y page 192).
The steering interventions are carried out
with a limited steering moment. The system
requires the driver to keep his hands on the
steering wheel and to steer himself.
If you do no tstee ryourself or if take your
hands off the steering wheel for a prolonged
period of time, the system will first alert you
with a visual warning. Asteering wheel
symbol appears in the multifunctio ndisplay.
If you have still not started to steer and have
not taken hold of the steering wheel after five
seconds, a warning tone also sounds to
remind you to take control of the vehicle.
DISTRONIC PLUS Steering Assist is then
switched to passive .DISTRONIC PLUS
remains active.
The system is switched to passive and no
longer assists you by performing steering
interventions if:
R you actively change lanes
R you switch on the turn signal
R take yourh ands off the steering wheel or
do no tstee rfor a prolonged period of time
i After you have finished changing lanes,
DISTRONIC PLUS Steering Assist is
automatically active once more.
DISTRONIC PLUS Steering Assist does not
provide assistance:
R on very sharp corners
R if no lane markings or no clear lane
markings have been detected
R if the vehicle in front is not detected at
speeds below 37 mph (60 km/h)
R in tire run-flat mode
Activating Steering Assist
X Select the DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering
Assist function using the on-board
computer (Y page 242).
The DTR+: Steering Assistant On message appears in the multifunction
display .DISTRONIC PLUS Steering Assist
is activated. Information in the multifunction display
If DISTRONIC PLUS Steering Assist is
activated but is not ready for a steering

Deactivating Steering Assist
X Deactivate the DISTRONIC PLUS with

is deactivated.
When DISTRONIC PLU Sis deactivated,
DISTRONIC PLUS Steering Assist is
deactivated automatically. HOLD function
General notes The HOLD function can assist the driver in the
following situations:
R
when pulling away, especially on steep
slopes
R when maneuvering on steep slopes
R when waiting in traffic
The vehicle is kept stationary without the
driver having to depress the brake pedal.
The braking effect is canceled and the HOLD
function deactivated when you depress the

X Stop the vehicle without making any sudden steering or braking
maneuvers. Pay attention to the traffic conditions as you do so.
X Secure the vehicle against rolling away (Y page 182).
X Check the tires and, if necessary, follow the instructions for a
flat tire (Y page 328).
X Check the tire pressures and, if necessary, correct the tire
pressure.
X Restart the tire pressure loss warning system when the tire
pressure is correct (Y page 352).Check Tire Pressure

Flat Indicator The tire pressure loss warning system generated a display
message and has not been restarted since.

Stop the vehicle on solid, non-slippery and
level ground, as far away as possible from
traffic.
X Switch on the hazard warning lamps.
X Secure the vehicle against rolling away
(Y page 182).
X If possible, bring the front wheels into the
straight-ahead position.
X Switch off the engine.
X Vehicles without KEYLESS-GO: remove
the SmartKey from the ignition lock.
X Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: openthe
driver's door.
The on-board electronics now have status
0.T his is the same as the SmartKey having
been removed.
X Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: remove the
Start/Stop button from the ignition lock
(Y page 165).
X All occupants must get out of the vehicle.
Make sure that they are not endangered as
they do so.
X Make sure that no one is near the danger
area while a wheel is being changed.
Anyone who is not directly assisting in the
wheel change should, for example, stand
behind the barrier.
X Get out of the vehicle. Pay attention to
traffic conditions when doing so.
X Close the driver's door. MOExtended tires (tires with run-flat
properties)
General notes With MOExtended tires (tires with run flat
characteristics), you can continue to drive
your vehicle even if there is a total loss of
pressure in one or more tires. The affected
tire must not show any clearly visible damage.
You can recognize MOExtended tires by the
MOExtended marking which appears on the
sidewall of the tire. You will find this marking
next to the tire size designation, the load- bearing capacity and the speed index
(Y
page 361).
MOExtended tires may only be used in
conjunction with an active tire pressure loss
warning system or with an active tire pressure
monitor.
If the pressure loss warning message
appears in the multifunction display:
R Observe the instructions in the display
messages (Y page 269).
R Check the tire for damage.
R If driving on, observe the following notes.
The maximum driving distance is
approximately 50 miles (80 km) when the
vehicle is partially laden and approximately
18 miles (30 km) when the vehicle is fully
laden.
In addition to the vehicle load, the driving
distance possible depends upon:
R speed
R road condition
R outside temperature
The driving distance possible in run-flat mode
may be reduced by extreme driving
conditions/maneuvers, or it can be increased
through a moderate style of driving.
The maximum permissible distance which
can be driven in run-flat mode is counted from
the moment the tire pressure loss warning
appears in the multifunction display.
You must not exceed a maximum speed of
50 mph (80 km/h).
i When replacing one or all tires, make sure
that you use only tires:
R of the size specified for the vehicle and
R marked "MOExtended"
If a tire has gone flat and cannot be
replaced with a MOExtended tire, a
standard tire may be used as a temporary
measure. Make sure that you use the
proper size and type (summer or winter
