system
You can change the settings of the locking
system in such a way that only the driver's
door and the fuel filler flap are unlocked. This
is useful if you frequently travel on your own.
X To change the setting: press the%
and & buttons until the battery check
lamp ( Ypage 78) flashes twice.
The SmartKey now functions as follows:
X To unlock the driver's door: press the
% button once.
X To unlock centrally: press the%
button twice.
X To lock centrally: press the&button. The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as
follows:
X
To unlock the driver' sdoor :pull the door
handle on the driver's door.
X To unlock centrally: pull the door handle
on the front-passenger door.
X To lock centrally: touch the outer sensor
surface on one of the door handles. Restoring the factory settings
X Press the %and& buttons
simultaneously for approximately six
seconds until the battery check lamp

General notes If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door or the trunk lid, the
anti-thef
talarm system will be triggered
(Y page 70).
There are several ways to tur noff the alarm:
X To stop the alarm with the SmartKey:
press the %or& button on the
SmartKey.

X Insert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
or
X To stop the alarm with KEYLESS-GO:
press the Start/Stop button in the ignition
lock. The SmartKey must be in the vehicle.
or
X Lock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey must be outside the

Removing the mechanical key

substances. For this reason, keep batteries
out of the reach of children.
If a battery has bee nswallowed, seek medical
help immediately. G

The SmartKey batteries contain perchlorate
material, which may requir especial handling
and regard for the environment. Observe

Press the &or% button.
The key battery is working properly if
battery chec klamp :lights up briefly.
If battery check lamp :does no tlight up
briefly during the test, the key battery is
discharged.

i Consult any authorized Mercedes-Benz
Service Center for a key battery.
i If the key battery is tested within the
signal range of the vehicle, the vehicle is
opened or closed by pressing the &or
% button respectively.
Replacing the battery You require a CR 2025 3 V cell battery.

of lint, grease, or other dirt.
X Insert the front tabs of the battery tray's
cover first and then press to close it.
X Replace the mechanical key in the
SmartKey.
X Check the function of all SmartKey buttons

Problems with the SmartKey
Problem Possible causes/consequences and

You cannot lock or
unlock the vehicle
using the SmartKey. The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged.
X
Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door handle from a
distance of approximately 1.5 ft (50 cm) and try to unlock or
lock the vehicle again.
If this does not work:
X Check the key battery and replace it if necessary (Y page 78).
X Unlock (Y page 83) or lock (Y page 83) the vehicle with the
mechanical key. The SmartKey is faulty.
X
Unlock (Y page 83) or lock (Y page 83) the vehicle with the
mechanical key.
X Have the SmartKey checked at a qualified specialist workshop. You can no longer
lock/unlock the
vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO. KEYLESS-GO is in standby mode because the vehicle has not been
unlocked for an extended period.
X
Pull the door handle twice and then insert the SmartKey into the
ignition lock. There is a malfunction with KEYLESS-GO.
X
Lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the %or& button.
X Have KEYLESS-GO checked at a qualified specialist workshop. There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.
X
Lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the %or& button. You have lost a
SmartKey. X
Have the SmartKey canceled at an authorized Mercedes-Benz
Center.
X Report the loss immediately to the vehicle insurers.
X If necessary, have the locks changed as well. You have lost the
mechanical key. X

WARNING
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take
the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.
Do not leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle, even if they are secured in a child
restraint system, and do not give them access
to an unlocked vehicle. Achild's unsupervised
access to a vehicle could result in an accident
and/or serious personal injury. They could:
R injure themselves on vehicle parts
R be seriously or fatally injured by extreme
heat or cold
R injure themselves or have an accident with
vehicle equipment that may still be in
operation even after the SmartKey has
been removed from the ignition, such as the
seat adjustment, steering wheel
adjustment or memory function. If children open a door, they could cause
severe or even fatal injury to other persons; if
they get out of the vehicle, they could injure
themselves when doing so or be seriously or
even fatally injured by any passing traffic.
Do not expose the child restraint system to
direct sunlight. The child restraint system's
metal parts, for example, could become very
hot, and a child could be burned on these
parts. G
WARNING
Do not carry heavy or hard objects in the
passenger compartmentu nless they are
firmly secured in place.
Unsecured or improperly positioned cargo
increases a child's risk of injury in the event
of:
R strong braking maneuvers
R sudden changes of direction

Unlocking and opening doors from
the inside
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked.
Open the door only when the traffic
conditions permit.
If the vehicle has been opened with the
SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO key, opening from
inside triggers the anti-theft alarm system.
Switch off the alarm (Y page 70).X
Pull door handle ;.
If the door is locked, locking knob :pops
up. The door is unlocked and can be
opened.
i When a door is opened, the side window
on that side opens slightly. When the door
is closed, the side window closes again.
! The side windows will not open/close if
the battery is discharged or if the side
windows have iced up. It will then not be
possible to close the door. Do not attempt
to force the door closed. You could
otherwise damage the door or the side
window. Centrally locking and unlocking the
vehicle from the inside
You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle
from the inside. This feature may be useful if,
for example, you wish to unlock the front-
passenger door from the inside or lock the
vehicle before you pull away. The locking or unlocking buttons of the
central locking do not lock or unlock the fuel
filler flap.
X
To lock: press button ;.
The vehicle locks when all front-passenger
doors are closed.
X To unlock: press button :.
You can open a locked door from inside the
vehicle. Open the door only when the traffic
conditions permit.
If the vehicle has been locked with the central
locking button:
R and the SmartKey is restored to the factory
settings, the entire vehicle is unlocked if a
door is opened from inside the vehicle.
R and the SmartKey is set to individual
settings, only the door that is opened from
inside the vehicle is unlocked.
If the vehicle has been locked centrally with
the SmartKey or with KEYLESS-GO, it does
not unlock if you use the unlocking button of
the central locking. Automatic locking feature
The vehicle locks automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the wheels of the
vehicle are moving at a speed of more than
9 mph (15 km/h). You may therefore lock
yourself out if the vehicle is being pushed,
towed, or located on a test rig.

Insert the mechanical key into the trunk lid
lock as far as the stop.
X Turn the mechanical key clockwise from
position 1to position 2.
X Remove the mechanical key.
X Replace the mechanical key in the
SmartKey. Unlocking the trunk (mechanical key)
! The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.
If the trunk can no longer be unlocked with
the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO:
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 77). X
Insert the mechanical key into trunk lid
lock :as far as the stop.
X Turn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
as far as possible.
The trunk is unlocked. X
Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
X Replace the mechanical key in the
SmartKey. Trunk emergency release
You can open the trunk lid from inside the
vehicle with the emergency release button. X
Briefly press emergency release
button :.
The trunk lid unlocks and opens.
The trunk lid can be unlocked and opened
with the trunk lid emergency release when
the vehicle is stationary or while driving.
Trunk lid emergency release light:
R The button flashes for 30 minutes after the
trunk lid is opened.
R The button flashes for 60 minutes after the
trunk lid is closed.
The trunk lid emergency release does not
open the trunk lid if the battery is
disconnected or discharged. Trunk

Folding the backrest forwards
In order to make it convenien
tfor passengers
to get in and out of the rear compartment,t he
driver's or front-passenger seat:
R is automatically moved forwards when the
backrest is folded forwards
R is automatically moved backwards when
the backrest is folded back X
Pull seat release handle :in the direction
of the arrow and fold the backrest
forwards.
The head restraint is lowered and the seat
moves forwards.
Folding back the backrest X
Fold the seat backrest back until it
engages.
The seat moves to its original position. The
head restraint is raised. The seat backrest
is engaged again. Adjusting the multicontour seat
You can adjust the multicontour seat using
COMAND (Y page 243). Adjusting the active multicontour
seat
You can adjust the active multicontour seat
using COMAND (Y page 245).
i If PRE-SAFE ®
has been activated, the air
pressure in the air chambers of the multicontour seat or active multicontour
seat is increased. These air chambers are
located in the side bolsters of the seat
cushion and backrest.
Adjusting the lumbar support
You can adjust the lumbar support using
COMAND (Y page 243). Switching the seat heating on/off

WARNING
Repeatedly setting the seat heating to level
3 may result in excessive seat temperatures.
The health of passengers that have limited
temperature sensitivity or a limited ability to
react to excessively high temperatures may
be affected or they may even suffer burn-like
injuries. Therefore, do not use seat heating
level 3repeatedly.
The three red indicator lamps in the button
indicate the heating level you have selected.
i If the battery voltage is too low, the seat
heating may switch off. The system automatically switches down
from level
3to level 2after approximately
eight minutes.
The system automatically switches down
from level 2to level 1after approximately ten
