• Does the steering wheel have the correct amount of free play?
• There should not be any strange sounds coming from the steering
wheel.

Maintenance and care
Check the 12-volt battery as follows.
■12-volt battery exterior
Make sure that the 12-volt battery terminals are not corroded and that
there are no loose connections , cracks, or loose clamps.
Terminals
Hold-down clamp
■Checking 12-volt battery fluid
Check that the level is between the “UPPER LEVEL” and “LOWER
LEVEL” lines.
“UPPER LEVEL” line
“LOWER LEVEL” line
If the fluid level is at or below the
“LOWER LEVEL” line, add distilled
water.
NOTICE
■If the fluid level is low or high
It is normal for the brake fluid level to go down slightly as the brake pads wear out
or when the fluid level in the accumulator is high.
If the reservoir needs frequent refil ling, there may be a serious problem.

If a warning light turns on or a warning buzzer
sounds
The following warning indicates a possible problem in the brake system.
Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact your Lexus
dealer.
*: Brake system warning buzzer (hybrid vehicles): When there is a possible problem that could affect braking performance, the
warning light will come on an d a warning buzzer will sound.

■Brake system warning light operation (hybrid vehicles)
Although depressing the brake pedal repeatedly may cause the red brake system
warning light to turn on and the buzzer to sound, this does not indicate a malfunction.
Calmly perform the following actions if any of the warning lights comes
on or flashes. If a light comes on or flashes, but then goes off, this does
not necessarily indicate a malfunction in the system. However, if this
continues to occur, have the vehicle inspected by your Lexus dealer.
Stop the vehicle immediately. Cont inuing to drive the vehicle may
be dangerous.

Brake system warning light (warning buzzer)*
•Low brake fluid
• Malfunction in the brake booster system
This light also comes on when the parking brake is not released.
If the light turns off after the parking brake is fully released the
system is operating normally.

The following warning indicates the possibility of damage to the vehicle
that may lead to an acc ident. Immediately stop th e vehicle in a safe place
and contact your Lexus dealer.
Failure to investigate the cause of th e following warnings may lead to the
system operating abnormally and possib ly cause an accident. Have the
vehicle inspected by your Lexus dealer immediately.

When trouble arises
Electric power steering system warning light (warning buzzer)Indicates a malfunction in the EPS (Electric Power Steering)

Pre-collision system warning light Indicates a malfunction in the pre-collision system
The warning light will operate as follows, even when the system
is not malfunctioning:
• The light will flash quickly when the system is operating. ( P. 3 1 0 )
• The light will turn on when the pre-collision system is dis- abled. ( P. 3 1 1 )
• The light will flash when the system cannot temporarily be used. ( P. 7 7 9 )
Slip indicator
Indicates a malfunction in:
• The VSC system;
•The TRAC system; or
• The hill-start assist control system (hybrid vehicles)
Gasoline vehicles:
The light will flash when the VSC or the TRAC is operating.
Hybrid vehicles:
The light will flash when the ABS, the VSC, the TRAC or the
hill-start assist control system is operating.

• The regenerative brake system; or
• The electronically controlled brake system

CAUTION
■If both the ABS and the brake system warning lights remain on
Stop your vehicle in a safe place immediately and contact your Lexus dealer. The
vehicle will become extremely unstable during braking, and the ABS system may
fail, which could cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
■When the electric power steering system warning light comes on
The steering wheel may become extremely heavy.
If the steering wheel becomes heavier than usual when operating, hold firmly and
operate using more force than usual.
■If the tire pressure warning light comes on
Be sure to observe the following precautions. Failure to do so could cause a loss of
vehicle control and result in death or serious injury.
●Stop your vehicle in a safe place as soon as possible. Adjust the tire inflation pres-
sure immediately.
●If the tire pressure warning light comes on even after tire inflation pressure adjust-
ment, it is probable that you have a flat tire. Check the tires. If a tire is flat, change
it with the spare tire and have the flat tire repaired by the nearest Lexus dealer.
●Avoid abrupt maneuvering and braking. If the vehicle tires deteriorate, you could
lose control of the steering wheel or the brakes.
■If a blowout or sudden air leakage should occur
The tire pressure warning system may not activate immediately.

One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
●One or both of the 12-volt battery terminals may be disconnected.
●The 12-volt battery may be discharged. ( P. 813)
●There may be a malfunction in the steering lock system.
Contact your Lexus dealer if the problem cannot be repaired, or if repair proce-
dures are unknown.
When the engine does not start, the following steps can be used as an
interim measure to start the engine if the “START STOP ENGINE” switch
is functioning normally:
Set the parking brake.
Shift the shift lever to P.
Turn the “START STOP ENGINE” switch to ACCESSORY mode.
Press and hold the “START STOP ENGINE” switch for about 15 sec-
onds while depressing the brake pedal firmly.
Even if the engine can be started using the above steps, the system may be
malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by your Lexus dealer.
The starter motor does not turn ov er, the interior lights and head-
lights do not turn on, or the horn does not sound.

One of the following may be the cause of the problem:

dures are unknown.
When the hybrid system does not start, the following steps can be used as
an interim measure to start the hybr id system if the “POWER” switch is
functioning normally:
Set the parking brake.
Shift the shift lever to P.
Turn the “POWER” switch to ACCESSORY mode.
Press and hold the “POWER” swit ch for about 15 seconds while
depressing the brake pedal firmly.
Even if the hybrid system can be star ted using the above steps, the system
may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by your Lexus dealer.
The interior lights and headlights do not turn on, or the horn does
not sound.
