Features of your vehicle84Immobilizer systemYour vehicle is equipped with an
electronic engine immobilizer system
to reduce the risk of unauthorized
vehicle use.
Your immobilizer system is com-
prised of a small transponder in the
ignition key and electronic devices
inside the vehicle.
With the immobilizer system, when-
ever you insert your ignition key into
the ignition switch and turn it to ON,
it checks and determines and verifies
if the ignition key is valid.
If the key is determined to be valid,
the engine will start.
If the key is determined to be invalid,
the engine will not start.
To activate the immobilizer sys-tem:Turn the ignition key to the OFF posi-
tion. The immobilizer system acti-
vates automatically. Without a valid
ignition key for your vehicle, the
engine will not start.To deactivate the immobilizersystem:Insert the ignition key into the key
cylinder and turn it to the ON position.
✽ ✽ NOTICEWhen starting the engine, do not use
the key with other immobilizer keys
around. Otherwise the engine may
not start or may stop soon after it
starts. Keep each key separate in
order to avoid a starting malfunction.✽ ✽NOTICEIf you need additional keys or lose
your keys, contact an authorized
Kia dealer.
WARNING
In order to prevent theft of your
vehicle, do not leave spare keys
anywhere in your vehicle. Your
Immobilizer password is a cus-
tomer unique password and
should be kept confidential. Do
not leave this number anywhere
in your vehicle.
CAUTION
Do not put metal accessories
near the ignition switch.
Metal accessories may interruptthe transponder signal and mayprevent the engine from beingstarted.

"Limp Home" Mode and Related
ProceduresIf the immobilizer warning indicator
blinks for five seconds when the igni-
tion key is turned to the "ON" posi-
tion, this indicates the immobilizer
system requires service. The engine
cannot be started without using the
procedure below.
The following procedure describes
how to start the engine using the
limp home function (0, 1, 2, 3 as a
sample password).✽ ✽ NOTICEYou can get a limp home password
when the vehicle is first delivered to
you. If you do not have a password,
consult your authorized Kia dealer.
CAUTION
Changes or modifications not
expressly approved by the partyresponsible for compliancecould void the user’s authorityto operate the equipment. If thekeyless entry system is inopera-tive due to changes or modifica-tions not approved by the partyresponsible for compliance, itwill not be covered by your man-ufacturer’s vehicle warranty.
CAUTION
The transponder in your ignitionkey is an important part of theimmobilizer system. It isdesigned to give years of trou-ble-free service, however youshould avoid exposure to mois-ture, static electricity and roughhandling. Immobilizer systemmalfunction could occur.
CAUTION
Do not change, alter or adjustthe immobilizer system becauseit could cause the immobilizersystem to malfunction andshould only be serviced by anauthorized Kia dealer.
Malfunctions caused by improp-er alterations, adjustments ormodifications to the immobilizersystem are not covered by yourvehicle manufacturer warranty.

41. To activate the password, turn the
ignition key "ON" and "OFF"
according to the digit numbers.
The immobilizer indicator will blink
along with the operation of the
ignition key. For example, turn the
ignition key once for digit number
"1", and twice for "2", and so on.
For the digit number "0", you must
cycle the ignition key 10 times.
2. Wait for 3~10 seconds.
3. You may set the remaining number of digits by following steps 1 and 2.
4. If all of the four password digits have been successfully entered,
turn the ignition key "ON" and
check that the immobilizer indica-
tor illuminates. From this time, you
have to start your engine within 30
seconds. If you try to start your
engine after 30 seconds, your
engine will not start.
✽ ✽NOTICEIf the engine stalls while driving in
the "limp home" mode, you can
start your engine within 3 seconds
without re-entering the password.If the immobilizer indicator blinks for
five seconds, you must re-enter the
password (steps 1~4).
After performing the limp home acti-
vation procedure, consult with your
authorized Kia dealer as soon as
possible.
CAUTION
 If the password is entered
incorrectly three consecutivetimes, wait for about one hourto perform the limp home acti-vation procedure again.
 If you cannot start your engine using the limp home activa-tion procedure, have yourvehicle towed by an author-ized Kia dealer.

Press start button again (for smart key system) This warning message illuminates if you can not operate the Engine
Start/Stop Button when there is a
problem with the Engine Start/Stop
Button system.
 It means that you could start the engine by pressing the Engine
Start/ Stop Button once more.
 If the warning illuminates each time you press the Engine
Start/Stop Button, have your vehi-
cle inspected by an authorized Kia
dealer.
Press start button with smart key
(for smart key system) This warning message illuminates if you press the Engine Start/Stop
Button while the warning message
“Key not detected” is illuminating.
 At this time, the immobilizer indica- tor light blinks.
Check fuse "BRAKE SWITCH"
(for smart key system and auto-matic transaxle) This warning message illuminates if the brake switch fuse is discon-
nected.
 It means that you should replace the fuse with a new one. If that is
not possible, you can start the
engine by pressing the Engine
Start/Stop Button for 10 seconds in
the ACC position.

Immobilizer IndicatorLight (Without Smart Key)This indicator light illuminates:
 When the vehicle detects the immobilizer in your key properly
while the ignition switch is ON.
- At this time, you can start theengine.
- The indicator light goes off after starting the engine.
This indicator light blinks:
 When there is a malfunction with the immobilizer system.
In this case, have your vehicle
inspected by an authorized Kia
dealer.
Immobilizer Indicator
Light (With Smart Key)This indicator light illuminates for up
to 30 seconds:
 When the vehicle detects the smart key in the vehicle properly
while the Engine Start/Stop Button
is ACC or ON.
- At this time, you can start theengine.
- The indicator light goes off after starting the engine.
This indicator light blinks for a few
seconds:
 When the smart key is not in the vehicle.
- At this time, you can not start theengine. This indicator light illuminates for 2
seconds and goes off:
 When the vehicle can not detect
the smart key which is in the vehi-
cle while the Engine Start/Stop
Button is ON.
In this case, have your vehicle
inspected by an authorized Kia
dealer.
This indicator light blinks:
 When the battery of the smart key is weak.
- At this time, you can not start theengine. However, you can start
the engine if you press the Engine
Start/Stop Button with the smart
key. (For more details, refer to
“Starting the Engine” in section 5).
 When there is a malfunction with the immobilizer system.
In this case, have your vehicle
inspected by an authorized Kia
dealer.
