Refuel to prevent Hybrid battery
damage
If the fuel tank is nearly empty, a
message “Refuel to prevent Hybrid
battery damage” will appear on the
LCD display. Also, the chime will
sound several times.
You must stop and obtain additional
fuel as soon as possible.
Check hybrid system stop vehicleand tarn off engine
If the hybrid system error occurs, a
message Check hybrid system stop
vehicle and tarn off engine will
appear on the LCD display and the
Ready indicator will blink. Also, the
chime will sound until the problem is
solved.
In this case, have your vehicle towed
to an authorized Kia dealer and
inspect the hybrid system.
Stop vehicle to charge battery
If the SOC (State Of Charge) is very
low, a message Stop vehicle to
charge battery will appear on the
LCD display.
To charge the hybrid battery, stop in
a safe place and move the shift gear
to the P(Park) position as soon as
possible.OTFH044304NOTFH044305N

ACC(Accessory)
Press the ENGINE START/STOP
button while it is in the OFF position
without depressing the brake pedal.
The steering wheel unlocks and
electrical accessories are opera-
tional.
If the ENGINE START/STOP button
is in the ACC position for more than
1 hour, the button is turned off auto-
matically to prevent battery dis-
charge.
ON
Press the ENGINE START/STOP
button while it is in the ACC position
without depressing the brake pedal.
The warning lights can be checked
before the engine is started. Do not
leave the ENGINE START/STOP
button in the ON position for a long
time. The battery may discharge,
because the engine is not running.
START/RUN
To start the hybrid system, depress
the brake pedal and press the
ENGINE START/STOP button with
the shift lever in the P (Park) position.
If you press the ENGINE
START/STOP button without
depressing the brake pedal, the
hybrid system will not start and the
button will change as follows:

If the battery is weak or the smart
key does not work correctly, you
can start the engine by pressing
the engine start/stop button with
the smart key.
The side with the lock button
should contact the engine
start/stop button directly.
When you press the engine
start/stop button directly with the
smart key, the smart key should
contact the button at a right angle.
WARNING - Unintended
vehicle movement
Never leave the smart key in the
vehicle with children or vehicle
occupants who are unfamiliar
with the vehicle operation.
Pushing the ENGINE
START/STOP button while the
smart key is in the vehicle may
result in unintended engine
activation and/or unintended
vehicle movement.
CAUTION
If ambient temperature is low, the "READY" symbol may stayilluminated longer than the nor-mal amount of time.
WARNING
The Hybrid system will start
only when the smart key is in
the vehicle. Never allow chil-
dren or any person who is unfa-
miliar with the vehicle to touch
the Hybrid system start/stop
button or related parts.

Driving your vehicle
Power brakes
Your vehicle's brake system is
power-assisted by the electric
hydraulic pump.
In the event the brakes lose power
because of a brake control system
malfunction, unstable power supply
or some other reason, you can still
stop your vehicle by applying greater
force to the brake pedal than you
normally would. The stopping dis-
tance, however will be longer. Please
have the system checked as soon as
possible.
BRAKE SYSTEM
WARNING - Steep hillbraking
Avoid continuous application of
the brakes when descending a
long or steep hill by shifting to a
lower gear. Continuous brake
application will cause the
brakes to overheat and could
result in a temporary loss of
braking performance.
CAUTION - Brake pedal
Do not drive with your foot rest- ing on the brake pedal. This willcreate abnormally high braketemperatures which can causeexcessive brake lining and padwear.
WARNING
If the brake pedal does not
return to its normal position
when released, there may be a
malfunction in the brake sys-
tem. Take your vehicle to an
authorized Kia dealer and have
the system checked.
WARNING
Do not turn off the Hybrid sys-
tem while going down a hill. The
brake booster may not work
sufficiently and the braking dis-
tance may be longer.
CAUTION
Do not depress the brake pedalcontinuously without READYstatus. The battery may be dis-charged.

Driving your vehicle
Use high quality ethylene gly-
col coolant
Your vehicle is delivered with high
quality ethylene glycol coolant in the
cooling system. It is the only type of
coolant that should be used because
it helps prevent corrosion in the cool-
ing system, lubricates the water
pump and prevents freezing. Be sure
to replace or replenish your coolant
in accordance with the maintenance
schedule in chapter 7. Before winter,
have your coolant tested to assure
that its freezing point is sufficient for
the temperatures anticipated during
the winter.
Check battery and cables
Winter puts additional burdens on
the battery system. Visually inspect
the battery and cables as described
in section 7. Never attempt to check
the Hybrid High Voltage Battery. The
level of charge in your battery can be
checked by an authorized Kia dealer
or a service station.
Change to "winter weight" oil
if necessary
In some climates it is recommended
that a lower viscosity "winter weight"
oil be used during cold weather. See
chapter 8 for recommendations. If
you aren't sure what weight oil you
should use, consult an authorized
Kia dealer.
Check spark plugs and igni-
tion system
Inspect your spark plugs as
described in chapter 7 and replace
them if necessary. Also check all
ignition wiring and components to be
sure they are not cracked, worn or
damaged in any way.
To keep locks from freezing
To keep the locks from freezing,
squirt an approved de-icer fluid or
glycerine into the key opening. If a
lock is covered with ice, squirt it with
an approved de-icing fluid to remove
the ice. If the lock is frozen internally,
you may be able to thaw it out by
using a heated key. Handle the heat-
ed key with care to avoid injury.
Use approved window washer
anti-freeze in system
To keep the water in the window
washer system from freezing, add an
approved window washer anti-freeze
solution in accordance with instruc-
tions on the container. Window wash-
er anti-freeze is available from an
authorized Kia dealer and most auto
parts outlets. Do not use engine
coolant or other types of anti-freeze
as these may damage the paint fin-
ish.

If An Accident Occurs
WARNING
• After parking the vehicle, shiftthe transmission into "P"
position. Turn off the hybrid
system by pushing the Engine
Start/Stop button.
For your safety, do not touch high voltage cables, connec-
tors and package modules.
High Voltage components are
orange in color.
Exposed cables or wires may be visible inside or outside of
the vehicle. Never touch the
wires or cables, because an
electrical shock may occur
causing injury or death.
(Continued)
(Continued)
If a fire occurs, to extinguish asmall high-voltage battery
fire, the following techniques
can be used:
- Dry chemical
- CO2
- Large amounts of water
- Regular foam
For a large high-voltage bat-
tery fire, use these types of
extinguishing methods:
- Large amounts of water
- Fog
- Regular foam
If you need towing, refer to chapter 6.WARNING
If a vehicle accident occurs:
1.Stop the vehicle and shift thetransmission into "P" posi-
tion.
And then depress the parking
brake.
2.Turn off the Hybrid system by pushing the Engine Start/Stop
button.
3.Evacuate to the safety place.
4.Call emergency services for help and let them know the
vehicle is a Hybrid vehicle.
Do not touch high voltage
cables, connectors and pack-
age modules. High voltage com-
ponents are orange in color.
Exposed cables or wires may
be visible inside or outside of
the vehicle. Never touch the
wires or cables, because an
