Button Position Action Notes
ON
Press the Engine Start/Stop button while it
is in the ACC position without depressing
the clutch pedal.
The warning lights can be checked before the engine is started. If you leave the Engine Start/Stop button in
the ON position for more than one hour, the
battery power will turn off automatically to
prevent the battery from discharging.

Stop button with the shift lever in neutral. If you press the Engine Start/Stop button

Start/Stop button with shift lever in P (Park).
When you press the Engine Start/Stop but-
ton without the shift lever in P (Park), the
Engine Start/Stop button does not turn to
the OFF position, but turns to the ACC posi-
tion.

✽NOTICE
• The engine will start by pressing
the Engine Start/Stop button, only
when the smart key is in the vehi-
cle.
• Even if the smart key is in the vehicle, if it is far away from the
driver, the engine may not start.
• When the Engine Start/Stop but- ton is in the ACC or ON position,
if any door is open, the system
checks for the smart key. If the
smart key is not in the vehicle, the
" " indicator will blink, and if
all doors are closed, the chime will
also sound for about 5 seconds.
The indicator will turn off while
the vehicle is moving. Keep the
smart key in the vehicle when
using the ACC position or if the
vehicle engine is ON.
Vehicle with manual transaxle:
1.Always carry the smart key with
you.
2.Make sure the parking brake is applied.
3.Make sure the shift lever is in neu- tral.
4.Depress the clutch and brake ped- als.
5.Press the Engine Start/Stop but- ton.
WARNING
Always wear appropriateshoes when operating your
vehicle. Unsuitable shoes,
such as high heels, ski boots,
sandals, flip-flops, etc., may
interfere with your ability to
use the brake, accelerator and
clutch pedals.
Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed.
The vehicle can move and lead
to an accident.
Wait until the engine rpm is normal. The vehicle may sud-
denly move if the brake pedal
is released when the rpm is
high.

Vehicle with automatic transaxle:
1.Always carry the smart key with
you.
2.Make sure the parking brake is applied.
3.Make sure the shift lever is in P (Park).
4.Depress the brake pedal.
5 Press the Engine Start/Stop but- ton.
✽ ✽ NOTICE
• Do not wait for the engine to warm
up while the vehicle remains sta-
tionary.
Start driving at moderate engine
speeds. (Steep accelerating and
decelerating should be avoided.)
• Always start the vehicle with your foot on the brake pedal. Do not
depress the accelerator while
starting the vehicle. Do not race
the engine while warming it up.
CAUTION
To prevent damage to the vehi-
cle:
If the engine stalls while you are in motion, do not attemptto move the shift lever to the P(Park) position.
If traffic and road conditionspermit, you may put the shiftlever in the N (Neutral) posi-tion while the vehicle is stillmoving and press the EngineStart/Stop button in anattempt to restart the engine.
Do not push or tow your vehi- cle to start the engine.
CAUTION
To prevent damage to the vehi-cle:
Do not press the EngineStart/Stop button for more than10 seconds except when thestop lamp fuse is blown.
When the stop lamp fuse isblown, you can't start the enginenormally. Replace the fuse witha new one. If you are not able toreplace the fuse, you can startthe engine by pressing andholding the Engine Start/Stopbutton for 10 seconds with theEngine Start/Stop button in theACC position.
For your safety always depressthe brake and/or clutch pedalbefore starting the engine.

Manual transaxle operation
The manual transaxle has 6 forward
gears. The transaxle is fully synchro-
nized in all forward gears so shifting
to either a higher or a lower gear is
easily accomplished. To shift to R (Reverse), make sure
the vehicle has completely stopped,
and then move the shift lever to neu-
tral before moving into R (Reverse).
When you've come to a complete
stop and it's hard to shift into 1st gear
or R (Reverse):
1.Put the shift lever in neutral and
release the clutch pedal.
2.Depress the clutch pedal, and then shift into first or R (Reverse) gear.
✽ ✽ NOTICE
During cold weather, shifting may
be difficult until the transaxle lubri-
cant has warmed up.
MANUAL TRANSAXLE

The shift lever can be moved without
pressing the button (1).
The button (1) must be pressed while
moving the shift lever to R (Reverse).
WARNING
Before leaving the driver’s seat,
always make sure the shift lever
is in 1st gear when the vehicle
is parked on a uphill and in R
(Reverse) on a downhill, set the
parking brake, and place the
ignition switch in the LOCK/OFF
position. Unexpected vehicle
movement may occur if these
precautions are not followed.

Using the clutch
The clutch pedal should be
depressed all the way to the floor
before:
- Starting the engine The engine will not start without
depressing the clutch pedal.
- Shifting
When releasing the clutch pedal,
release it slowly. The clutch pedal
should always be released while
driving.
Downshifting
Downshift when you must slow down
in heavy traffic or drive up a steep hill
to prevent engine load.
Also, downshifting reduces the
chance of stalling and can accelerate
when you need to increase your
speed again.
When the vehicle is going downhill,
downshifting helps maintain safe
speed by providing brake power from
the engine and enables less wear on
the brakes.CAUTION
To prevent unnecessary wear or damage to the clutch:
Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving.
Do not hold the vehicle with the clutch on an incline, whilewaiting for the traffic light, etc.
Always depress the clutch pedal down fully to preventnoise or damage.
Do not start with the 2nd (sec- ond) gear engaged exceptwhen you start on a slipperyroad.

Good driving practices
Never take the vehicle out of gear
and coast down a hill. This is
extremely dangerous.
Don't "ride" the brakes. This can cause the brakes and related parts
to overheat and malfunction.
When you are driving down a long
hill, slow down and shift to a lower
gear. Engine braking will help slow
down the vehicle.
Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. This will help avoid
over-revving the engine, which can
cause damage.
Slow down when you encounter cross winds. This gives you much
better control of your vehicle.
Be sure the vehicle is completely stopped before you shift into R
(Reverse) to prevent damage to
the transaxle. Exercise extreme caution when
driving on a slippery surface. Be
especially careful when braking,
accelerating or shifting gears. On a
slippery surface, an abrupt change
in vehicle speed can cause the
drive wheels to lose traction and
may cause loss of vehicle control
resulting in an accidentCAUTION
To prevent damage to theengine, clutch and transaxle:
When downshifting from 5th gear to 4th gear, be careful notto inadvertently push the shiftlever sideways engaging the2nd gear. A drastic downshiftmay cause the engine speedto increase to the point thetachometer will enter the red-zone.
Do not downshift more than two gear at a time or down-shift the gear when the engineis running at high speed(5,000 RPM or higher).
WARNING
Do not use the engine brake
(shifting from a higher gear to
lower gear) rapidly on slippery
roads. The vehicle may slip
causing an accident.
