WARNING
If you smell exhaust fumes insideyour vehicle, have your vehiclechecked by your authorized dealerimmediately. Do not drive your vehicle ifyou smell exhaust fumes. Carbonmonoxide is present in exhaust fumes.Take precautions to avoid its dangerouseffects.
Important Ventilating Information
If you stop your vehicle and then leave theengine idling for long periods, werecommend that you do one of thefollowing:
•Open the windows at least 1.0 in(2.5 cm).
•Set your climate control to outside air.
STARTING A DIESEL ENGINE
Cold or Hot Engine
1.Switch the ignition on and wait untilthe glow plug indicator goes off.
2.Fully depress the clutch pedal (manualtransmission) or brake pedal(automatic transmission).
3.Start the engine.
Note:Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
Note:Releasing the clutch pedal (manualtransmission) or brake pedal (automatictransmission) while the engine is startingwill stop the engine cranking and return toignition on.
Note:When the temperature is below 5°F(-15°C), you may need to crank the enginefor up to 10 seconds.
Note:You can only operate the starter fora limited period of time.
Note:After a limited number of attemptsto start your engine, the system does notallow you to try again until a period of timehas elapsed, for example 30 minutes.
Failure to Start
If the engine does not crank when theclutch pedal has been fully depressed andthe ignition key is turned to position III.
1.Fully depress the clutch and brakepedals.
2.Turn the key to position III until theengine starts.
DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER
The filter forms part of the emissionsreduction system on your vehicle. It filtersharmful diesel particulates (soot) from theexhaust gas.
Regeneration
WARNING
Do not park or idle your vehicle overdry leaves, dry grass or othercombustible materials. Theregeneration process creates very highexhaust gas temperatures and the exhaustwill radiate a considerable amount of heatduring and after regeneration and after youhave switched the engine off. This is apotential fire hazard.
Note:Avoid running out of fuel.
Note:During regeneration at low speed orengine idle, you may smell a hot metallicodor and could notice a clicking metallicsound. This is due to the high temperaturesreached during regeneration and is normal.

The system reduces fuel consumption andCO2 emissions by shutting down theengine when your vehicle is idling, forexample at traffic lights.
WARNINGS
The engine may restartautomatically if required by thesystem.
Switch the ignition off beforeopening the hood or carrying out anymaintenance.
Always switch the ignition off beforeleaving your vehicle, as the systemmay have shut down the engine butthe ignition will still be live.
In an automatic transmission vehicle, always shift to park (P) beforeleaving your vehicle.
Note: The Start-Stop indicatorwill illuminate green when theengine shuts down, flashingamber (accompanied by a message) if youneed to take action, and grey if start-stopis not available. See Warning Lamps andIndicators (page 81).
Using Start-Stop (ManualTransmissions)
To Stop the Engine
1.Stop your vehicle.
2.Move the transmission to neutral.
3.Release the clutch and acceleratorpedals.
To Re-Start the Engine
Press the clutch pedal.
Note:To obtain maximum benefit from thesystem, move the transmission to neutraland release the clutch pedal during any stopof longer than three seconds.
Note:Start-stop also comes with stallrecovery. If you fully press the clutch pedalafter stalling the engine, it will automaticallyrestart the engine for you.
Using Start-Stop (AutomaticTransmissions)
To Stop the Engine
1.Stop your vehicle in drive (D).
2.Release the accelerator pedal.
3.Keep the brake pedal pressed.
Note:The engine will also shut down inneutral (N) and park (P) – with or withoutfoot on brake.
To Re-Start the Engine
Release the brake pedal or press theaccelerator pedal.
Limitations of use:
The engine may not shut down undercertain conditions, for example:
•Engine is warming up.
•To maintain climate comfort.
•Low battery charge.
•The outside temperature is too low ortoo high.
•The driver door has been opened.
•The driver seatbelt has been undone.
•The heated windshield is switched on.
•During regeneration of the dieselparticulate filter.

Adjust your vehicle speed and the distanceto other vehicles without the need forheavy braking or acceleration.
Efficient Speed
Higher speeds use more fuel. Reduce yourcruising speed on open roads.
Accessories
Try not to add unnecessary accessories tothe exterior of your vehicle. If you use a roofrack, remember to fold it down or removeit when not in use.
Electrical Systems
Switch off all electrical systems when notin use, for example air conditioning. Makesure you unplug any accessories from theauxiliary power points when not in use.
COLD WEATHER
PRECAUTIONS
The functional operation of somecomponents and systems can be affectedat temperatures below -13°F (-25°C).
DRIVING THROUGH WATER
WARNING
Do not drive through flowing or deepwater as you may lose control of yourvehicle.
Note:Driving through standing water cancause vehicle damage.
Note:Engine damage can occur if waterenters the air filter.
Before driving through standing water, check the depth. Never drive through waterthat is higher than the bottom of the frontrocker area of your vehicle.
When driving through standing water, drivevery slowly and do not stop your vehicle.Your brake performance and traction maybe limited. After driving through water andas soon as it is safe to do so:
•Lightly press the brake pedal to dry thebrakes and to check that they work.
•Check that the horn works.
•Check that the exterior lights work.
•Turn the steering wheel to check thatthe steering power assist works.
FLOOR MATS
WARNINGS
Always use floor mats that aredesigned to fit the foot well of yourvehicle. Only use floor mats thatleave the pedal area unobstructed. Onlyuse floor mats that are firmly secured toretention posts so that they cannot slip outof position and interfere with the pedalsor impair safe operation of your vehicle inother ways.
Pedals that cannot move freely cancause loss of vehicle control andincrease the risk of serious personalinjury.
