On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (M IL) Iii in
the instrument cluster is part of the On-Board
Diagnostic (OBD
II) system.
The warning/indicator ligh t illuminates whe n
the ignition is switched on and goes out after
the eng ine starts and the idle has stabilized.
This indicates that the MIL is working proper­
ly .
If the light does not go out after t he engine
is started, or illuminates while you are driv­
i ng, a malfunction may exist in the eng ine sys­
tem. If the light illuminates, the catalytic con­
verter could be damaged .
Contin ue driving
with reduced power (avoid­
i ng sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel­
erations) and have the cond ition corrected.
Contact your a uthorized Audi dea ler.
If the light il luminates, the electronic speed
limiter may also be malfunct ioning. For more
information
c:> page 31, Electronic speed
limiter.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate
c:> page 163.
On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo­
nents of your emission contro l system . Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code. In case of a mal­
funct ion, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the control
module memory.
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery sys·
tem. If the light illuminates after a refuelling,
stop the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is properly closed
c:> page 163.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the
stored data can on ly be displayed using spe­
c ial dia gnost ic equipment (generic scan tool
furOBD) .

light sensor checked as soon as possible at a
dealership.
Adaptive light *
The benefit of adaptive l ight is that the curve
and the edge of the road are better i llum inat­
ed . The adaptive light is contro lled automati­
cally, depending on vehicle speed and steering
wheel angle.
When driving a round bends, the head lights
are contro lled according to steering wheel an­
g le . So that there is no black area ahead of the
ve hic le, the two main beams pivot at different
angles. The system works above a speed of
about 6 mph (10 km/h).
Com ing home /le avi ng home function *
The function is swit ched on when the switch is
in the AUTO* position and the function is
shown as active in the driver information sys­
tem.
The
coming hom e function illuminates the
area around the vehicle when the ign ition is
switched off and the driver's door is ope ned.
The length of time the lights remain on can be
set in the menu display
( Illumination > Exte­
rior lights > coming home ).
The leavi ng home function i lluminates the
area around the vehicle when unlocking it.
A WARNING
- Never use dayt ime running l ights to see
where you are going. They are not bright
enough and w ill not let you see far
enough ahead for safety, especially at
dusk or when it is dar k. Always switch on
the low beams at dusk or when i t is dar k.
- Automatic headlights a re only intended
to assist the dr iver. They do not re lieve
t he driver of his responsibi lity to check
t he headlights and to turn them on man­
ually according to the current light and
visibility conditions. For example, fog
and rain cannot be detected by the light
sensors. So a lways switch on the head­
lights under these weather cond itions
and when driving in the dark

- Crashes can happen when you cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by other motorists.
- Always turn on the headlights so that

can see your car from the back .
- Please observe legal regulat ions w hen

- T he light sensor for head light control is
located in the rear view mirror mount.
Do not apply any stickers to t he wind­
shield in th is area to preven t malfunc­
tions or fa ilures.
- Some exter io r l ighting funct ions can be
adjusted in t he driver i nformat ion sys­
t em

- I f you remove the igni tion from t he igni ­
t ion lock while the headligh ts are s till
on, a buzzer wi ll sound as long as the
driver's door is o pen to remind yo u to
t u rn off the lights.
- Always observe the specific local regula ­
tions for your area as to when to use your
lights.
- With automatic headlights, the high­
beam f unction is also available, but w ith
one restrict ion: If you have not sw itched
the high beams back to low beams dur­
ing automatic headlight operation (for
example, after d riving throug h a tunnel),
only the low beams come on the next
t ime au tomati c headlights a re swi tched
on. To use the high beams , you firs t have
t o pull the hig h beam lever back and
then push the lever fo rward again .
- In coo l or damp weather, the inside of
the headlights, turn signals an d tail
lights can fog over due to the tempera­
t u re difference between the inside and
outside. They w ill clear shortly after
switching them on. This does not affect
the se rv ice life of the lighting.

With the ignition switched ON, the glow of in­
strument needles can be adjusted to appear
brighte r or d immer.

With the l ights sw itched on, the brightness of
instrument cluster (i.e. needles, gauges and
displays) and center console illuminat ion can
be adjusted.
@ Note
The instrument cl uster and cente r console
illumination (gauges and needles) comes
on when you switch on the ignition and the
veh icle headlights are off. Be aware of the
following difference between mode ls built
to US or Canadian specifications:
- USA mode ls : illumination of the instru­
ment cluster (gauges and needles), dash
and cente r consol e around the gearsh ift
l ever is controlled by a light senso r locat­
ed in the instrument panel. The instru­
ment pane l ill umination will a utomat i­
ca lly become dimmer as the daylight
fades away and eventually will go o ut
complete ly when outside light is very
l ow . Th is is to rem ind you, the driver, to
switch on the headlights before it gets
too dark . -
Canada models: instr ument panel illumi ­
nation will stay bright regardless of the
intensity of ambient light . A lways be
aware of changes in outside light condi­
tions while you are driving. Respond in
time to fading daylight by tur ning the
light switch to position fD (o r "AUTO" if
your car is equipped with this feature) to
t ur n on you r headlights.
Luggage compartment light
The light is located on the right side of the
lu ggage compartme nt. These lights come on
automat ica lly when the rea r lid is opened . The
lights turn off automatica lly if the lid is left
open for more then 10 minutes.

You are we ll-advised to fold the exterior mir­
rors in when maneuvering in tight spaces or
when leaving the car parked close to other
vehicles. ..,,.

The washer jets extend forward out o f the
front bumper driven by water pressure to
spray the front headlights with water.
You shou ld inspect the headlights regularly
(for example when refueling) and clean
off
any solid dirt or insects from the lenses .
To ensure the system wo rks properly in wi nter,
keep the washer jets free of snow and remove
any ice using a de-icing spray.
Service position
It is only possible to change wiper blades if
you move the wiper arms to the service posi ­
tion .
In o rder to use the windsh ield wipers, t he
front lid mus t be comp lete ly closed.

• When there is a risk of frost, make s ure that
the wiper b lades a re not frozen to the wind­
shield.

for example, if yo u want to protect the

Cleaning windshield wiper blades
Clean the windshie ld w iper blades when they
begin to leave streaks.

.. Use a soft cloth and glass cleaner to clean
the windshield wiper blades .
A WARNING
Dirty windsh ield wipe r blades can impair
your view. This can lead to accidents .

-Commercial hot waxes applied by auto ­
matic car washes affect the cleanability
of the glass surface.

Digital compass
Activating or deactivating the compass

The direction is displayed on the interior rear
view mirror.

The digital compass only works with the igni­
tion turned on. The direct ions are displayed as
in itials:
N (North), NE (Northeast), E (East),
SE (Southeast), S (South), SW (Southwest),
W (West), NW (Northwest).

To avo id inaccurate directions, do not al­
low any remote controls, electrical sys­
tems, or metal parts close to the mirror.
Setting the magnetic deflection zone
Applies to vehicles: with digital compass
The correct magnetic deflection zone must be
set in order to display the directions correctly.

The compass has to be recalibrated if the dis­
play is wrong or inaccurate.

A WARNING
This is how you can reduce the risk of in­
jury when leaving your veh icle.
- Never park the vehicle where it can come
in contact with dry grass, spilled fuel or
any other flammable mater ials.
- Never allow anyone -especia lly small
children -to remain in the vehicle when
it is locked. Locked doors make it more
difficult for rescuers to access the pas­
senger compartment in the event of an
eme rgency. Danger to life!
- Never leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle . Children could re lease the park­
ing brake o r move the gea rshift lever out
of gear. The vehicle could start to roll
away and ca use an accident.
- N o matter wha t the season is, the tem­
perature in a par ked vehicle can rea ch
dangero us levels .
Starting on hills

The system is act ivated when the brake pedal
i s depressed
for a few s econds .
After releasing the brake pedal, the brake
power is held for a brief moment to prevent
the vehicle from rolling back when start ing . At
th is time, you can easi ly beg in to move your
vehicle.
A WARNING
-- If you did not begin moving immed iate ly
after releasing the brake pedal, under
c e rtain ci rcumstances, the vehicle would
begin to ro ll backwa rd. Depr ess the
b rake ped al immedi ately o r engage the
hand brake .
- Should t he e ngine sta ll, dep ress the
b ra ke ped al immediate ly or eng age the
hand b rake .
- I n or der to prevent the vehicle from roll­
ing back unintentionally when s tarti ng in
s top -and-go traffic, keep the brake pedal
depressed for a few seconds before driv­
ing off.

Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warn ing system warns the driver if
he exceeds a previous ly stored max imum
speed . A warning tone will sound as soon as
the ve hicle speed exceeds the set speed by
about 3 mph (3 km/h). At the same time, a
warning symbo l appea rs in the display.
The speed warn ing system has
two warning
thr esho lds
that f unction independently of
each other and that have somewhat different
purposes:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the maxi­ mum speed while you are driving . This setting
will remain in effect unti l yo u tur n off the ..,.

ignition, assuming that you have not changed
or reset the setting.
The speed warning symbo l
Jmj (USA models)/
caj (Canada models) in the wa rning 1 display
appears when you exceed the maximum
speed. It goes out when the speed falls below
the stored max imum speed .
The speed warning symbo l wi ll also go out if
the speed
exceeds the sto red maximum speed
by more than about 25 mph (40 km/h) for at
least 10 seconds. The stored maximum speed
is deleted .

Storing warning 2 is recommended if you al­
ways
want to be reminded of a certain speed,
for example when yo u are traveling in a coun­
try that has a general max imum speed limit,
or if you do not want to exceed a specified
speed for winter tires.

Unlike warning 1, it will not go out until the

Cruise control
Switching the system on
The cruise control system makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph (30 km/h) .
