28 Driver information system
Fue l economy messages are displayed when
fuel consumption is increased by certain con­
ditions. If you follow these fuel economy mes ­
sages, you can reduce your vehicle's consump­
t ion of fuel. The messages appear automati­
cally and are only displayed in the efficiency
program . The fuel economy messages turn off
automatically after a certain period of time .

ately after it appears, press the

-Once you have turned a fuel economy
message off, it will only appear again af­
ter you turn the ignition on aga in.
- The fuel economy messages are not dis­
played in every instance, but rather in in­
tervals over a period of ti me.
Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due.

The schedule for the next oil change or inspec­
tion is calculated automatically and displayed
according ly . The display works in two stages :
Service reminder
30 days before the next service is due, a serv­
ice rem inder appears in the display when you
turn on the ignition.
After about 5 seconds the display sw itches
back to normal. The d istance and time re- maining are
updated each time the ignition is
turned on until the date due for service is
reached.
Service due
When the due date for service is reached, th e
message
Service due! appears in the instru­
ment cluster immediately after you turn on
the ignition . Additionally, a warning tone
sounds. After about 5 seconds the disp lay
switches back to normal.
Calling up the service schedules
If or when an oil change or inspection is due,
can be shown in the instrument cluster by se­
lecting the service interval display . Select
Chec k > Service > Oil change or Service by us­
ing the
I RESET I button and the rocker switch

Resetting the service interval display
Your authorized Audi dealer will reset the cor­
responding service schedule after performing
the appropriate service on you r vehicle. You
also have the possibility to reset the oil
change schedule after having performed an
o il change according to Audi specif ications.
- Switch the ignition on.

button is not pulled within 5 seconds, the
display reset mode closes.

If you disconnect the battery terminals, no
calculations can be made for the service
interval display dur ing this time and no
serv ice reminder will appear. Remember
that observing the proper service intervals
i s vitally important to extending the life of
your vehicle, pa rticularly the engine, and
maintaining its value. Even if the mileage
driven is low, the maximum period of one
year from one service to the next m ust not
be exceeded.

Power locking system
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors simultaneously.
The power lock ing system in your ve hicle in­
corporates the fo llow ing funct ions:
- Central locking function
- Remote con tro l feature q page 33 .
- Anti -Theft Alarm Sys tem q page 38.
A ll the doors and the rear lid are locked by the
centra l locking system when you lock the vehi­
cle.
The unlocking a nd lock ing mode * can be
changed in t he d river i nfo rmation system
qpage24.
Unlocking the vehicle
You can un lock the vehicle from outs ide e ither
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in t he driver's door lock.
When you
unlock your veh icle:
- The anti-theft alarm system is deactivated br iefly.
- The veh icle inter ior lights ill uminate for ap­
proximate ly 30 seconds.
- All turn signa l lights will f lash twice w hen
the car is unlocked.
- After unlock ing the vehicle, yo u have 30 sec­
onds to open a door or the rear lid. After 30
seconds, the vehicle automatically locks and
the ant i-theft a larm system activates again.
The rear lid can be locked or un locked either
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in the driver's door lock.
Unlock ing the ve hicle w ith the remote co ntrol
c::::5 will only unlock the rear lid, to open it, the
lid handle needs to be p ressed .
Locking the vehicle
You can lock the vehicle from o utside e ither by
using the remote control
or by insert ing and
turning the key in the drivers's door lock.
When you
lo ck the vehicle:
- All doors and the rear lid are locked. -
All turn signal lights wi ll flash once when
the car is loc ked .
- The ant i-theft a larm system is ac tiva ted.
The ho rn of the anti -theft alarm system wi ll
sound and t he anti-theft a la rm system read­
iness light, located in the center of the in­
strument panel be low the w indshield on the
r ight side of the air vent, will start to blink.
- The vehicle interior lights turn off.
Automat ic lock ing*
T he au tom atic locking fea ture locks a ll the ve­
hicle doors an d the rear lid when you drive
faster than 9 m ph (15 km/h).
You can unlock t he vehi cle from the i nside by:
- remov ing the key from the igni tion swi tc h
(the vehi cle w ill automatically u nlock itself)
or
- pressi ng the un loc k pa rt of the power lock
sw itch

pull ing the door ha ndle (to open the doo r).
If you wish, yo u can have an a utho rized Aud i
dealer convert your power doo r lock system to
automat ic locking.

- When you loc k yo ur vehicle from o utside,

main inside the vehicle. Remember,
when yo u lock the vehicle from the out­
side th e wi ndows cannot be o pened from
the inside.
- Wh en you leav e th e ve hicle, always re ­
move the ign ition key and take it w ith
you. This will preven t passe ngers (chil­
d ren, f or example) from acci denta lly be­
i n g loc ke d in the vehicle s hould they

With the ignition switched ON, the glow of in­
strument needles can be adjusted to appear
brighte r or d immer.

instrument cluster (i.e. needles, gauges and
displays) and center console illuminat ion can
be adjusted.

The instrument cl uster and cente r console
illumination (gauges and needles) comes
on when you switch on the ignition and the
veh icle headlights are off. Be aware of the
following difference between mode ls built
to US or Canadian specifications:
- USA mode ls : illumination of the instru­
ment cluster (gauges and needles), dash
and cente r consol e around the gearsh ift
l ever is controlled by a light senso r locat­
ed in the instrument panel. The instru­
ment pane l ill umination will a utomat i­
ca lly become dimmer as the daylight
fades away and eventually will go o ut
complete ly when outside light is very
l ow . Th is is to rem ind you, the driver, to
switch on the headlights before it gets
too dark . -
Canada models: instr ument panel illumi ­
nation will stay bright regardless of the
intensity of ambient light . A lways be
aware of changes in outside light condi­
tions while you are driving. Respond in
time to fading daylight by tur ning the
light switch to position fD (o r "AUTO" if
your car is equipped with this feature) to
t ur n on you r headlights.
Luggage compartment light
The light is located on the right side of the
lu ggage compartme nt. These lights come on
automat ica lly when the rea r lid is opened . The
lights turn off automatica lly if the lid is left
open for more then 10 minutes.

Turn the knob to the desired posit ion:

rors in when maneuvering in tight spaces or
when leaving the car parked close to other

- Switching off the dimming function of
the inside rear view mirror also deact i­
vates the automatic dimming f unction of
the exterior m irrors.
- The automatic dimming mirrors do not dim when the interior lighting is turned
on or the reverse gear is selected .
-Automat ic dimming for the m irror only
operates properly if the light striking the inside mirror is not hindered in any way.
Sun visors
Using the sun visors makes driving safer.

ped with lids. Push lid in direction of a rrow to

Wiper and washer system

The windshield wiper lever controls both the
windshield wipers and the washer system .

Turning off the wipers
.. Move the lever back to position @ .
The w indshield w ipers and washer only work
when the ignition is turned on . If you sw itch
off the igni tion with the windshie ld w iper lev­
er st ill in the inte rva l wipe position and then
come back a whi le later and drive off, the ra in
sensor will reactivate itself after the vehicle speed has exceeded 4 mph (6 km/h) .
T he rai n sensor* is only activated with the
wiper lever set to position
(D . When it starts
to rain, the rain senso r will a utomat ically acti­
vate the intermittent wiping mode .
T o reduce the sensi tivity of the sensor, move
swi tch @ down . To increase the sensi tivity,
move the switc h up. The higher you adjust the
sensitivity, the faster the senso r will react
when it senses moisture on the windsh ield.
The pauses between wiper turns depend not only on the sensitivity setting, but on the ve-
hicle speed as well. ..,.

Digital compass

The direction is displayed on the interior rear
view mirror.

The digital compass only works with the igni­
tion turned on. The direct ions are displayed as
in itials:
N (North), NE (Northeast), E (East),
SE (Southeast), S (South), SW (Southwest),

To avo id inaccurate directions, do not al­
low any remote controls, electrical sys­
tems, or metal parts close to the mirror.
Setting the magnetic deflection zone
Applies to vehicles: with digital compass
The correct magnetic deflection zone must be
set in order to display the directions correctly.

Calibrating the compass

The compass has to be recalibrated if the dis­
play is wrong or inaccurate.

Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the rearmost position .
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is de­
p loying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the following manner:
"' Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upright
pos it ion.
Do not ride with the seat reclined.
"'T he idea l position for the head restraint is
with the upper edge of the restraint level
with the top of your head

A WARNING -
-Never adjust the driver's or front pas­
senger's seat while the vehicle is moving.
If you do this while the vehicle is moving,
you will be out of position. A lways adjust
the driver's or front passenger's seat
when the vehicle is not moving.
- Be careful when adjusting the seat
height . Check to see that no one is in the
way, or ser ious injury cou ld result!
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of
sudden braking or accident, front pas­
sengers must never ride in a moving ve­
hicle with the seatback reclined. Safety
be lts and the airbag system only offer
maximum protection when the seatback
is upr ight and the safety belts are prop­
erly positioned on the body. The more
the seatback is reclined, the greater the
risk of persona l injury from an incorrect

The air conditioning automatically maintains the selected temperature in the vehicle interior
throughout each season .

We recommend the following sett ing :
> Rotate the knob 9 fig. 79 @ to the right to
switch on the air conditioning .
> Set the temperature to 72 °F (22 °().
> Press the !AUTO !~ fig. 79 button .
Using the previously recommended setting is
the quickest way to achieve a comfortable cli ­
mate in the vehicle . This setting should there­
fore only be changed when personal comfort
l eve ls or certain circumstances require it.
The climate controls are a combination of au ­
tomatic heating and ventilation systems and a
coo ling system which dehum idifies and coo ls
the air inside the vehicle.
The climate controls automatically maintain a temperature once it has been set. The tem­
perat ure of the air from the vents, fan speed
(air vol ume) and air distribution are also auto­
matically adjusted . The system also takes into
account strong sunshine so that manua l ad­
justment is not necessary. So in almost all
cases,
automatic mode offers the best condi­
tions for the comfort of the occupants at all
times of the year
9 page 71 .
Please note :
In cooling mode , relative humidity in the inte­
rior is reduced . This prevents the windows
from fogg ing up.
When relative humidity and temperatures outside are high ,
condensation can drip from
the a ir condition ing evaporator and form a
pool of water under the vehicle. This is normal
and not an ind ication of a leak!
When outside temperatures are low, the fan
does not switch to a higher speed until the
coolant has reached an adequate tempera ­
tu re, with the exception of the defrost set­
t in g.
When accelerating at wide-open throttle, the air conditioning compressor is temporarily
switched off to maintain full engine power.
In order to ensure engine cooling under ex­
treme engine loads, the compressor is switch­
ed off if coolant temperatures climb too high.
Functions are set by turning the rotary knob
or switched on and off by tapp ing the buttons.

The windshield and side windows ore defrost­
ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possible .

Automatic operation ensures constant tem­ pe rat ures in the inter ior and dehum idifies the

ume , and distribution are controlled a utomat­
ically to reach or maintain the desired interior
temperature as quickly as possib le. Fluctua­
tions in exterior temperature and the effects
of temperature from the posi tion of the sun
are compensated for automat ically.
Manual air recirculation mode~
The recirculation mode prevents polluted out­
side air from entering the vehicle interior .

If the LED in the switch stays on after A/C
ope ration has been switched off(= switch­
i ng the A/C off), there is a fau lt in an air
cond itioning component. Please consult
an authorized Audi dealer when there is an
operat ing problem.
Rear window defogger~
The rear window defogger clears the rear win­
dow of condensation .
