Basic requirements for the Start-Stop
mode
-The driver's door is closed .
- The driver' seat belt is latched.
- The hood is closed.
- The vehicle must have been driven faste r
than 2.5 mph (4 km/h) since the last stop .
- A tra ile r is not hitched to the veh icle.
& WARNING
- Never let the vehicle roll with the engine
switched off. You could lose contro l
over
the vehicle. This can lead to a collision
and serious injuries.
- T he brake booster and the steering sup­
port do not work wh ile the engine is
switched off. More force is required to
stop and to steer the vehicle.
- To reduce the risk of injuries, make sure
that the Start-Stop-System is turned off
when working in the engine compart­ ment¢
page 90.

Starting/stopping the engine

.. Slow the vehicle to a stop using the brake
and keep pressing the brake pedal. The en­
gine will switch off. The
[I] indicator light
appears in the information line in the instru­
ment cluster d isplay.

.. When you take your foot off the brake ped ­
al, the engine restarts. The indicator light
turns off.
Additional information
The engine will switch off in the P, D, N and S
pos itions as well as in manual mode. In the P
position, the engine will also remain off if you
take your foot off the brake pedal. The engine
starts again when you select another selector lever position and take your foot off the brake
pedal.
If you se lect the R position during a Stop
phase, the engine will start again.
S hi ft from D to P quickly to prevent the engine
from starting unintentionally when shifting
through R .
You can determine for yourself if the engine
will stop or not by reducing or increasing the
amount of force you use to press the brake
pedal. For example, if you only lightly press
on the brake pedal in stop-and and-go traffic
or when turning, the engine will not switch off
when the vehicle is stationary. As soon as you
press the brake down harder, the engine will
switch off.

The standard Start-Stop-mode can be cancel­
led for different system-related reasons.

Engine will not swit ch off
Before each stop phase, the system checks i f
certain cond itions have been met. For exam ­
p le, the engine will
n ot be switched off in the
following situations:
- T he eng ine has not reached the minimum
required temperature for Start -Stop-mode .
- The inter io r temperature selec ted by the A/C
system has not been reached .
- T he outs ide temperature is extremely h igh/
low .
- T he w indshield is being defrosted

-The parking system* is switched on.
- The battery charge level is too low .
- The steering wheel is sharply turned or
there is a steering movement.
- After engaging the reverse gear.
- On sharp inclines.

Engine automatically restarts
The stop phase is interrupted in the following
situations, for examp le. The engine restar ts
witho ut any act ion by the driver.
- T he interio r temperature varies from the
temperature selected in the A/C system .
- The w indshield is being defrosted
<=:> page 82.
- The brake pedal is pressed several times i n a
row .
- The battery charge level becomes too low .
- High power consumption.
Sw itching the ignition automatically
To prevent the battery from d raining, the igni­
tion will switc h off
automat ically when a ll of
the following conditions have been met:
- T he veh icle has already been driven.
- T he eng ine has been tu rned off by the Star t-
Stop-System*.
- The driver's door is opened.
- The driver's seat belt is removed.
- The brake pedal is not pressed dow n. -
The vehicle is stationa ry .
In this case, the activated low beam will be re­
placed by the side ma rke r lights. The s ide
marker lights w ill switch off after approxi­
mately 30 minutes or when you lock the vehi ­
cle .
If the Star t-Stop System h as n ot turned off
the engine or if you have sw itched the Start­
Stop system off man ua lly, the ignition will
not
be automatica lly switched off and the engine
will continue to ru n ¢ ,& .
A WARNING
=
Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation.
(D Tips
If you shift into the D, Nor S posit ions af­
ter sh ifting into reverse, the vehicle must
be driven faster tha n 6 mph (10 km/h) in
order for the engine to sw itch off again.

The speed is kept constant via an engine o ut­
p ut adjustment or act ive brake intervention .
A WARNING
-Always pay attention to traffic even when
the cruise control is switched on . You are
always responsible for your speed and
the distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.
- For safety reasons, the cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go t raff ic, on twist ing roads and
when ro ad conditions are poor (such as
ice , fog, grave l, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -risk of accident.
- T urn off the cruise control tempor aril y
when entering turn lanes, highway exit lanes or in construction zones.
- Please note tha t inadvertent ly "rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerator peda l causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is
because the cr uise control is overridden
by t he driver 's acce lerat ion.
- If a brake system malfunction such as
overheat ing occurs when the cru ise con­
tro l system is sw itched on, the braking
function in the system may be switched
off . The other cruise control functions re­
ma in active as long as t he indicator light
[ij;rn~i~ (US models) Iii.I (Canad ian mod­
els) is on.
(D Tips
The b rake lights illuminate as soon as the
brakes decelerate automat ica lly.
Changing speed
• To increase/decrease the speed in inc re ­
men ts, tap the lever in the
0 10 direction
¢ page 91, fig. 91 .
• To increase/decrease the speed quick ly, hold
the lever in the
0 10 direction until the de ­
sired speed is displayed.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down
to increase yo ur speed, e.g . if you want to
pass someone . The speed you saved earlier
will res ume as soon as you release the acce ler­
ator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
6 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes,
the cr uise control w ill turn off temporari ly.
The green symbol
[ij;(l)~i~ (US mode ls) ,ii in
the d isplay is replaced with a white symbol.
T he saved speed remains the same .
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.
• Switch on the ign ition.
• Pull lever into position

• Press the lever in t he 0 o r 0 direction to
increase or decrease your speed .
• Release t he lever to save that speed .
Th is function makes it possib le, for examp le,
to save the speed you want before dr iv ing on
the highway. Once on the h ighway, act ivate
the cr uise con trol by pulling the leve r toward
CD -

Switching adaptive cruise control off
.. Push the lever away from you into position
@ until it clicks into place. The message
ACC off appears.

vehicles are detected up ahead . The stored
speed is ma intained.
I -A moving vehicle is detected up ahead .
The adaptive cruise control system regulates
the speed and distance to the moving vehicle
ahead and acce lerates/brakes automatica lly.
f¥i -Adaptive cruise control is switched on. A
mov ing vehicle up ahead was detected . Your
veh icle remains stopped .
I· When automatic braking is not able to
keep enough distance to a previously detected
mov ing vehicle up ahead, you must take con­
trol and brake

If adaptive cruise control is not shown in the
d isplay, you can call it up with the multifunc­
tion steering wheel buttons¢
page 24 .
Based on the symbols in the display, you can
determine if the system is maintaining a dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead and what that dis ­
tance is.
No vehicle -No vehicle ahead was detected.
White vehicle -A vehicle ahead was detected.
Red vehicle -Prompt for the driver to take ac­
tion

Both
arrows o n the scale © indicate the dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead . No arrow appears
when the vehicle is on an open road and there
is no object ahead.
If an object is detected
ahead, the arrow moves on the scale.
The green zone on the scale shows the stored
distance. For information on changing the stored distance, refer to
c:::> page 98
. If the
distance selected is too close or may soon be­
come too close, the arrows move into the red
z one on the sca le .
A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collisions, other accidents
and serious personal injuries.
- Pressing the
!SET ! button when driv ing at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), w ill au­
tomatically accelerate the vehicle to 20
mph (30 km/h), which is the minimum
speed that can be set.
@ Tips
-If you switch the ignit ion or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- You cannot switch the Electronic Stabili­
zation Control (ESC) to the SPORT mode
when adaptive cruise control is switched
on.

hicle ahead accelerates, adaptive cr uise con­
trol will also accelerate up to the stored
speed.
The higher the speed, the greater the distance
in yards (meters) ¢.&. . The
Distance 3 setting
is recommended .
The distances prov ided are spec ified values.
Depending on the driving situation and the
how the vehicle ahead is driving, the actual
d istance may be more or less than these tar­
get distances.
The various symbols for the time increments
appear briefly in the information line @
¢ page 96, fig. 98 when you change the set­
tings.

sponds to a distance of 92 feet/28 meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interva l of
l second.
~ -- ~-- Distance 2: This setting corre­
sponds to a distance of 118 feet/36 meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interva l of 1.3 seconds .
~--- ~-Distance 3: This setting corre ­
sponds to a distance of 164 feet/SO meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interva l of 1.8 seconds .
~---- ~ Distance 4: This setting corre ­
sponds to a distance of 210 feet/64 meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interva l of 2.3 seconds .
A WARNING
Following other vehicles too closely in­
creases the risk of collisions and serious
personal injury.
- Setting short distances to the traffic
ahead reduces the time and distance
available to br ing your vehicle to a safe
stop and makes it even more necessary
to pay close attention to traffic.
- Always obey applicable traffic laws, use
good judgment, and select a safe follow- ing distance
for the traffic, road and
weather conditions.
@ Tips
- Distance 3 is set automatically each time
you switch the ignition on.
- Your standard settings are automatically
stored and assigned to the remote con­
tro l key being used.

In certa in situations, the system will prompt
you to take action . Th is could happen, for ex­
amp le, if braking by the adaptive cruise con­
trol system is not enough to maintain enough
distance to the vehicle ahead.
The indicator light

- Press the brake pedal to slow your vehicle
down.

Selector lever lock
The selector lever lock prevents you from se­l ecting a position unintentionally, causing the
vehicle to roll. When engaging some selector lever positions, you must press the button on
the selector lever
c:> fig. 123 and/or press the
brake pedal.
You must press the brake pedal to engage a
selector lever position when the engine is run­
ning while the vehicle is stationary. The ar­
rows
c:> fig. 124 indicate when you need to
press the button on the selector lever.
The selector lever does not lock if you shift
from D to R within one second. This allows
you to "rock" the vehicle to free it when it is
stuck.
P- Park
The whee ls are locked in this position. Only
shift into park when the vehicle is stationary
c:> &. To engage the P se lector lever position,
press the button on the selector lever and
shift into the P position .
You can only shift out of park when the engine
is running and you are pressing the brake ped­
al. Press the button on the selector lever to
release the parking lock and select the desired
selector lever pos ition .
P engages automatically when you switch the
engine off while D, Sor R is engaged or in
manual mode .
If you switch the engine off when N is engag ­
ed, the transmission remains in N for approxi­
mately 30 minutes and then Pis engaged.
You must use the emergency release proce­
dure to release the parking lock before towing
the vehicle

R - Reverse
The reverse gear is engaged in this position .
Only select reverse when the vehicle is sta ­
tionary and the engine is running at idle speed
c:> &. To engage the R selector lever position,
press the button on the selector lever, press

the brake peda l and move the selector lever
into the R position.
T he back-up lights turn on when you select
the R selector lever position wh ile the engine
is running .
N -Neutral
The transmission is in idle in this pos it ion . To
engage the N selector lever posit ion, press
the button on the selector lever and shift into
the N position.
If you switch the engine off when N is engag­
ed, the transmission remains in N for approxi­
mately 30 minutes and then Pis engaged.
You cannot select the N position when the ig­
nition is switched off. When driv ing through
an automat ic car wash, first select the N posi ­
tion and then switch the engine off

The veh icle cannot be locked when the selec­
tor lever is in the N position.
D/S - Posit ion for driv ing forward
In the D/S position, the transmission can be
operated either in the normal mode D or in
the sport mode S . You can only select the S se­
lector lever position when Dis engaged. Move
the selector lever back to engage the S selec­
tor lever position. To select the D selector lev­
er position again when Sis engaged, move the
selector lever back
c:> .&. . To shift from N to D
when traveling at speeds below 1 mph (2km/
h), press the brake peda l and select the D se­
lector lever position

In the normal mode D, the transmission auto ­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio.
It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv­
ing style.
Se lect the
sport mode S for sporty driving.
The vehicle makes f ull use of the engine's
power. Shift ing may become noticeab le when
accelerat ing.
The S selector lever position engages auto­
matically when you select the dynamic mode
in Audi drive select.

when the engine is r unning at idle . To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake in all
selector lever positions except P and N
when the eng ine is running. Do not inad­
vertent ly press the accelerator pedal
when the veh icle is stationary . Otherwise
the vehicle will s tart to move immediate­
ly. This cou ld h appen even if the parking
brake is activa ted .
- Be fore opening the hood, select the P se­
le ctor lever position and set the par king
brake. This red uces the risk of a crash. Al­

the engine is running.
- If you mus t get out of the vehicle, move
the se lector lever securely into the P po ­

Transmission malfunction
[O] Transmission: plea se press the brake ped­
al and select the position again
Press the brake pedal and select the des ired
selector lever posit ion again . You can then
continue dr iving .
[O] Transmission hot: please modify driving
style
The transmission temperature has increased
significantly due to the sporty driving manner.
Drive in a less sporty manner until the tem­
perature returns to the normal range and the
indicator light switches of.
[O] Gearbox malfunction: you can continue
driving
There is a system ma lfunction in the transmis­
sion. You may continue driving. Drive to your
authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair fa­
cility soon to have the malfunction corrected.
l'i]Jffl Gearbox malfunction: you can contin­
ue driving in D only until engine is off
There is a system ma lfunction in the transmis­
sion. The transmission is switching to emer ­
gency mode. If you turn the engine off, you
will not be able to select any other selector
lever positions after starting the engine again.
Drive to your authorized Aud i dealer or quali­
fied repair facility immediately to have the
malfunction corrected.
[O] Gearbox malfunction: you can continue
driving (limited functionality)
There is a system ma lf u nction in the transmis­
sion. The transmission is switching to emer­
gency mode. Th is mode only shifts into cer­
tain gears or will not longer shift at all. The
engine may stall. Dr ive to your authorized
Aud i dealer or qualified repair facility immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected.
[O]/jj'j Gearbox malfunction: no reverse gear
(y ou can continue driving)
The re is a system malfunction in the transmis­
s ion. The transm ission is swi tching to emer­
gency mode. This mode on ly shifts into cer ­
tain gears or will not longer shift at al l. You
cannot engage the reverse gear . Dr ive to your
authorized Aud i dea ler immediately to have
the malfunction corrected.
[O] Vehicle may roll! Cannot shift to P. Please
apply parking brake
-The parking lock was re leased using the
emergency release
¢page 121. Or
- The parking brake cannot engage automati­
cally. Drive to your authorized Audi dea ler or
qualified repair facility immediately to have
the malfunction corrected.
[O] Gearbox malfunction: Stop and shift to P
Do not continue dr iving . Select the P selector
