Adjusting the armrest
.. To adjust the angle, raise the armrest from
the starting position detent by detent.

position, lift it above the top position and
then fold it back down.
Opening the storage compartment
.. Press the button -arrow- upward.
Please note that the driver's arm movements
may be restr icted w ith the armrest folded
down. For this reason, the armrest should not
be folded down when driving in city traffic.

Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge is
as even as possible with the top of your head.
If that is not possible, try to adjust the head
restraint so that it is as close to this position
as possible. Move the head restraint so that it
is as close to the back of the head as possible .

A WARNING

- The backrest must be securely latched in
posit ion so that no items contained in
the luggage compar tment can slide for­
wa rd upo n sudden b raking . -
Always check whether the latch is fully
engaged by pull ing the seatback for­
ward.
- Never allow safety belts to become dam­
aged by be ing caught in door or seat
hardware.
-Torn or frayed safety be lts can tear and
damaged be lt hardware can break in a
crash . Inspect the belts periodica lly.
Belts show ing damage to webb ing, b ind­
ings, buckles, o r retractors must be re­
p laced.

- If you move the front seat back when the
rear seat backrest is folded forward, you
cou ld damage the head r estraints on th e
rea r seat.
- Slide the be lt guide on the outside safety
be lt a ll the way up befo re fold ing the
backrest bac k forward. Make sure the
se at belt is not pinched or damaged
when the rear seat backrest if fo lded
back. Other objects should be removed
from the rear seat bench to protect the
seatback from damage.

Tie-downs and cargo net

Stowing luggage.
In a collis ion, the laws of phys ics mean that
even smaller items that are loose in the vehi­
cle will turn into heavy missiles that can cause
serious injury. Items in the veh icle pick up ki­
netic energy which varies with the vehicle and
the weight of the item. Vehicle speed is the
most significant factor.
F or example, in a frontal coll is ion at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a
10- lb (5 kg) object are about
20 times the
normal weight of th e item. This means that
the weight of the item would suddenly be the
equivalent of about 200 lbs (90 kg). One can
easi ly imagine the injuries that an item of that
weight flying freely through the passenger

compartment can cause in a collision at a
speed considered relatively low.
A WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used
to secure items to tie-down s can fail dur­
ing hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury.
- Always use suitable retaining straps and
properly secure items to the tie-downs in
the luggage compartment to help pre­
vent items from shifting or flying for­
ward.
- Never attach a child seat tether strap to
a t ie-down .
- For strength-related reasons, the mount­
ing hooks can only be used to secure ob­
jects weigh ing up to 10 lb. (5 kg). Heavi­
er objects will not be adequately secured
- there is a risk of injury.

A WARNING
-The ski sack is intended only for the
t ransportation of skis and other light ob­
jects . To reduce the risk of serious per­

pointed objects in the ski sack .
- When brak ing rapidly or during an acci­
dent the load could be displaced and
cause injury to occupants .
- Sharp edges on the load must be covered
for protection . Always fasten the belt
tightly around the sack and its contents

- Never stow the ski sack away when it is
still wet or damp (for example, snow
melting from skis). Allow it to dry com­
pletely before stowing it away.
- Position skis in the ski sack with the
pointed ends facing the front and ski
poles with the pointed ends facing the
rear.

Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks .
11-In an emergency, pull the switch C®) and
conti nue to pull it to slow your vehicle down
with the parking brake .
11-As soon as you release the sw itch C®) or ac-
celerate, the braki ng p rocess stops.
If you pull the sw itch (®) and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy braking function is in itiated. The vehicle is
b ra ked at a ll four wheels by activating the hy­
d raul ic br ake system. The b rake performance
i s sim ilar to making an emergency stop¢.&. .
I n o rder not to activate the emergency brak­
i ng by m istake, an audible warning tone (bu z­
z er) sounds when the switc h(®) is p ulled. As
soon as the switch(®) is released, or the accel ­
erator pedal is dep ressed, emergency braking
stops .
.&_ WARNING
Emergency braking shou ld only be used in
an emergency, when the normal foot brake
has failed or the brake pedal is obstructed.
Using t he parking brake to perform emer­
gency braking will slow you r vehicle down
as if you had made a fu ll brake applicat ion.
The laws of phy sic s ca nnot be s uspended
eve n w ith ES C and its a ssoci ated compo­
nents (ABS, ASR, EDL). In corners and
when road or weather conditions are bad,
a full brake application can cause the vehi­
cle to skid or the rear end to break away -
r isking a n accident.
Start-Stop-System
Description
Appl ies to vehicles : wit h Start-Stop-System
The Start-S top -System can he lp increase fuel
economy and reduce C O2 emissions.
I n the Start-Stop-mode , the eng ine shuts off
automatically whe n the vehicle is stopped,
such as at a traffic light. The ig nit ion remains

switched on during this stop phase. The en­
gine wi ll be a utomatica lly restarted when
needed .
T he las t Start -Stop-Sys tem se tting (on/off us­

ignition is turned on. The LED in the

ton t urns on when the Start-Stop-System is
switched off manually.
Basic requir ements for the Start -Stop
mode
- The driver 's door is closed.
- The driver' seat belt is latched.
- The hood is closed.
- The vehi cle must have bee n dr iven faster
t han
2.5 mph (4 km/h) since the las t stop.
- A t railer is not hitched to the ve hicle.
.&_ WARNING
- Never let the ve hicle roll with the eng ine
sw itched off. You co uld lose control over
the vehicle. This can lead to a collision
an d serio us in juries .
- The brake boo ster and the s teering sup­
port do not work while the engine is
switched off . More force is required to
stop and to steer the veh icle.
- To reduce t he risk of injuries, make sure
that the Start-Stop -System is tu rned off
when working in the eng ine compart­
ment¢

Switching the ignition automatically
To prevent the battery from draining, the igni­
tion will switch off
automatically when all of
the following conditions have been met:
- The vehicle has already been driven .
- The engine has been turned off by the Start-
Stop-System*.
- The driver's door is opened .
- The driver's seat belt is removed.
- The bra ke peda l is not pressed down.
- The vehicle is stationary.
In this case, the activated low beam will be re­
placed by the side marker lights. The side
marker lights will switch off after approx i­
mately 30 minutes or when you lock the vehi­
cle .
If the Start-Stop System has
not turned off
the engine or if you have switched the Start­
Stop system off manually, the ignition wil l
not
be automatically switched off and the engine
will continue to run ~,& .
& WARNING
Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation.
(0 Tips
If you shift into the D, N or S positions af­
ter shifting into reverse, the vehicle must
be driven faster than 6 mph (10 km/h) in
order for the engine to switch off again .

Start-Stop-System will

matically. The engine must be started with

I START ENGINE STOP! button.
Start-Stop system: System fault! Function
unavailable
There is a malfunction in the Start-Stop-Sys­
tem . Drive the vehicle to an authorized repair
facility for servicing as soon as possible to cor­
rect the malfunction.

Improper use of the A udi drive select can

Description
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the veh icl e's featu res. The engine, t ransm is­
sion, stee ring, reve rsible sa fe ty belt tension­
e rs a nd adap tive air su spension are alw ays in­
volved.
Engine and transmission
Depending on the mode, the e ng ine and the
tra nsmission respond quic ker or i n a more bal­
an ced manne r to acce le rator pedal move­
men ts. In the sporty dyn ami c mode, the
tra nsmission sh ifts at highe r RP Ms.
Air suspension*
The adaptive air suspens ion/adaptive air sus­
pension spor t*
(Air suspen sion in the MM I) is
a n e lec tronic ally con trolled air suspension and
da mpi ng sys tem. They are adjus ted depend­
ing on the se lected driving mode, the drive r's
steeri ng, braking an d acceleration input and
the road s urface, ve hicle speed and load. A
sporty setting is generally used in ve hicles
with adaptive air suspension sport*. T
he veh icle clearance varies depending on the
se lected mo de an d the speed .
T he highway setti ng is a ct ivated automatic ally
whe n you dr ive above 7 5 mph (120 km/ h) fo r
more than
3 0 seconds in the Auto or Dynamic
mode. The gro und clea rance is increased a uto ­
matically if the speed drops below
44 mph
(70 km/h) for more than 120 seconds.
Steering
T he s teer ing adap ts in terms of s teer ing effor t
and steering ratios . Indirect stee ring that
moves easily, like the steer ing in comfo rt
mode, is best suited to long drives on a high­
way. In contrast, dynamic mode provides sporty, direct steer ing .
Sport differential*
As a component of the all whee l drive system
(quattro)

dist ributes the driving power to the rear ax le
depending on the sit uat ion. The distrib ution
of power var ies depend ing on the selected
mode, from balanced (comfort) to agile (dy­
nam ic) . Th e goal is a h igh level of ag ility and
ability to acce lerate on cu rves . Th e ve hicl e is
very res ponsive to stee ring.
Curve light*
The curve light adapts to driving on curves .
T he pivo ting act io n and the lighting are also
adapt ed to the mode .
Adaptive cruise control*
The behav ior when accelerating can be adjust­
ed from comfortab le to sporty, depending on
the drive select mode. Adaptive cru ise cont ro l
also responds to th e dr iv ing behavior o f th e
vehicle a head in a mo re co nse rvative o r sporty
man ne r.
Engine sound*
The sound of the eng ine is adapted to the se­
