Door opening/closing
mechanism initialisation
If the battery is disconnected or the
protection fuse blows, the door
opening/closing mechanism must be
initialised as follows:
❒ close all the doors;
❒ press the
button on the key or the
door locking/unlocking button on
the dashboard;
❒ press the
button on the key or the
door locking/unlocking button on

ELECTRIC WINDOWS
IN BRIEF
These operate when the ignition key
is turned to MAR-ON and for about
three minutes after the ignition key is
turned to STOP or removed unless
one of the doors is opened.
The buttons are located on the
central tunnel.
20)
Operation
❒ A - Open/close left window;
❒ B - Open/close right window;
Push the corresponding buttons to
open/close the desired window. When one of the two buttons is
pressed briefly, the window moves in
stages; if the button is held down
to open, "continuous automatic"
operation is activated.
If the button is pressed again the
window will stop in its current position.
If the button is pressed for several
seconds, the window lowers
automatically (only with ignition key in
MAR-ON position).
Continuous automatic operation
(for versions/markets, where provided)
This is activated by pressing one of
the two buttons for longer than half a
second. The window stops when it
reaches the end of travel position, or
when the button is pressed again.
It can be used on both the driver side
and passenger side, only for lowering
the window.
Electric window system
initialisation
For versions/markets where provided,
after a break in power supply for the
control units (battery replaced or
disconnected or protective fuses for the
electric window control units replaced),
the automatic operation of the windows
must be restored.40

SPEEDOMETER (SPEED
INDICATOR)
Indicator J shows the speed of the car.
REV COUNTER
Light C shows the engine revs.
FUEL LEVEL GAUGE
Gauge G shows the amount of fuel in
the tank.
The switching on of the
digital
warning light indicates that 4–5 litres of
fuel are left in the tank; in this situation,
refuel as soon as possible.
Do not travel with the fuel tank almost
empty: any gaps in fuel delivery could
damage the catalytic converter.
ENGINE COOLANT
TEMPERATURE
INDICATOR
Indicator A shows the temperature of
the engine coolant and starts supplying
indications when the fluid temperature
exceeds approximately 50°C.
The
digital warning light may switch
on (together with a message on the
display) to indicate that the coolant
temperature is too high; in this case,
stop the engine and contact a
dedicated Alfa Romeo Dealership. GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR
The GSI (Gear Shift Indicator) system
advises the driver to change gear
through a specific indication E fig. 59
on the instrument panel.
Through the GSI, the driver is notified
that changing gear will allow a
reduction in fuel consumption.
Therefore, for driving oriented towards
reducing fuel consumption, it is
advisable to stick to “Natural” or “All
Weather” mode and to follow the
suggestions of the Gear Shift Indicator,
where traffic conditions permit.
When the (
) icon is displayed on the
instrument panel, the GSI suggests
switching to a higher gear, while when
the (
) icon is displayed, the GSI
suggests changing to a lower gear.
IMPORTANT The GSI is not active
when the transmission is operating in
AUTO mode.
IMPORTANT The indication in the
instrument panel remains on until the
driver shifts gear or the driving
conditions go back to a situation where
gearshifting is not required to improve
consumption.

light coming on, with key at MAR-ON -
starting from 2,000 km (or equivalent
value in miles) before these deadlines
and is activated again every 200 km (or
equivalent value in miles). Below 200
km servicing indications are more
frequent. The indication will appear in
kilometres or miles according to the
"Unit of measurement" settings. In
addition, when the vehicle mileage is
close to a scheduled servicing ("service
coupon"), and the key is turned to
MAR-ON, the
warning light will
appear on the display along with the
word "Service" and followed by the
number of kilometres or miles left
before vehicle servicing. Contact a
dedicated Alfa Romeo Dealership. The
operations in the “Scheduled Servicing

88) The car must be locked after afew clicks of the parking brake: if
this is not so, contact the
dedicated Alfa Romeo Dealership
to have it adjusted. Always park
the vehicle safely as indicated by
the Highway Code and as
described above.
USING THE
TRANSMISSIONThe 4C features the TCT 6-speed twin
dry clutch transmission with steering
wheel controls. This is an advanced
technical solution which combines the
control of a manual gearbox, the
immediacy of a sequential system and
the convenience of being able to select
an automatic selection programme
without the slowdown of a conventional
automatic transmission.
With the key removed from the ignition,
the system will not implement any
action when the buttons on the
transmission control panel on the
central tunnel fig. 74 are pressed,
irrespective of the pressure applied to
the brake pedal. Therefore, the
transmission will remain in the condition
that it was in when the engine was
switched off. With car stationary and key at MAR-ON
(ignition-operated electrical services
activated), the screen displays the gear
engaged and the active operating
mode (automatic =
AUTOor manual =
no display).
OPERATING MODES
The transmission can operate in two
operating modes (except when the
"Race" mode is selected):
❒ the first manual type (MANUAL), in
which the driver decides directly
when to change gear;
❒ the second completely automatic
(AUTO), in which the system decides
when to change gear.
When the "Race" mode is selected, the
only allowed operating mode is
MANUAL.
Manual operation
(MANUAL)
In this operating mode, the driver is
responsible for choosing the best gear
to engage, depending on the car
operating conditions.
Use the “+” steering wheel stalk to
engage a higher gear, or the “–” stalk to
engage a lower gear (see the following
paragraph, "Steering wheel stalks").74

STARTING AND DRIVING

LEVERS ON THE
STEERING WHEEL
These enable sequential gear shifting
fig. 77.
– steering wheel stalk "+(pulling stalk
towards driver, see fig. 78): engage
higher gear;
– steering wheel stalk "– (pulling stalk
towards driver, see fig. 78): engage
lower gear. The engagement of a lower (or higher)
gear is only permitted if the engine
rpm allow it.
STARTING THE CAR
To start the engine press the brake
pedal: the system engages neutral (N)
automatically.
After the starting procedure, 1st gear
(1) or reverse (R) can be engaged.
Irrespective of the mode selected
(AUTO/MANUAL), to engage 1st gear
or reverse (R), it is necessary to press
the brake pedal and press the
1button
on the transmission control panel (or
the "+" steering wheel stalk) to engage
1st gear or the Rbutton to engage
reverse.
When 1st gear is engaged, the system
sets itself to AUTOmode.
Neutral (N) can be engaged again by
pressing the Nbutton with the brake
pedal pressed.
When the 1,Nor Rbuttons are
pressed (or "+" steering wheel stalk is
operated) without pressing the brake
pedal, no gear change request is
implemented by the system.
IMPORTANT Reverse cannot be
engaged by pressing the "-" stalk on
the steering wheel. Important information
If starting is requested with a
transmission failure (see "Warning lights
and messages" paragraph), carry out
the “Delayed start-up” procedure: when
the key is turned to AVV for at least 7
seconds with brake pedal pressed, the
engine will be started. The system will
remain in “recovery” condition.
If the engine does not start, contact a
dedicated Alfa Romeo Dealership.
When the driver's door is opened, the
system activates the hydraulic
components so that they are prepared
for the subsequent engine starting.
MOVING THE CAR
The car can set off both in 1st gear and
reverse (R).
Notes (concerning car
start-up)
The gears can only be engaged by
pressing the brake pedal. If the brake
pedal is not depressed, the display will
show a dedicated message.
It is not possible to set off in a higher
gear than 1st: if this is attempted,
the display shows a dedicated
message.77
