Set the parking brake.
Put the shift lever in N.
Turn the “ENGINE START STOP” switch to ACCESSORY
mode.
Push and hold the “ENGINE START STOP” switch for about
15 seconds while depressing the brake pedal firmly.
Even if the engine can be started using the above steps, the system
may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped pro-
fessional.
Vehicles with a manual transmission
Set the parking brake.
Put the shift lever in N.
Turn the “ENGINE START STOP” switch to ACCESSORY
mode.
Push and hold the “ENGINE START STOP” switch for about
15 seconds while depressing the brake pedal and clutch
pedal firmly.
Even if the engine can be started using the above steps, the system
may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped pro-

If the shift lever cannot be shifted from P (vehicles with a hybrid transmission or a Multidrive)
If the shift lever cannot be shifted with your foot on the brake pedal,
there may be a problem with the shift lock system (a system to pre-
vent accidental operation of the shift lever). Have the vehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional immediately.
The following steps may be used as an emergency measure to
ensure that the shift lever can be shifted:
Set the parking brake.
Except hybrid vehicle
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system:
Turn the engine switch to the “ACC” position.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system:
Turn the “ENGINE START STOP” switch to ACCESSORY
mode.
Hybrid vehicle
Vehicles without an electronic key:
Turn the engine switch to the “ACC” position.
Vehicles with an electronic key:
Turn the “POWER” switch to ACCESSORY mode.
Depress the brake pedal.
Press the shift lock override
button.
The shift lever can be shifted
while the button is pressed.

If the shift lever cannot be shifted (vehicles with a multi-mode manual transmission)

pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side of
the electronic key to the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch.
The “ENGINE START STOP”
switch will turn to IGNITION ON
mode.
When the smart entry & start system is deactivated in customization
setting, the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will turn to ACCESSORY
mode.
Firmly depress the brake pedal and check that the smart entry
& start system indicator light (green) turns on.
Press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.
In the event that the “ENGINE START STOP” switch still can-
not be operated, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.
Vehicles with a multi-mode manual transmission

Replacing the key battery
As the above procedure is a temporary measure, it is recommended that the
electronic key battery be replaced immediately when the battery is depleted.

Vehicles with a Multidrive or multi-mode manual transmission: Release
the brake pedal and press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch in

When the electronic key does not work properly
Make sure that the smart entry & start system has not been deactivated in
the customization setting. If it is off, turn the function on.

If the vehicle becomes stuck
Carry out the following procedures if the tires spin or the vehicle
becomes stuck in mud, dirt or snow:
Vehicles with a hybrid transmission or a Multidrive: Stop the
engine (except hybrid vehicle) or hybrid system (hybrid
vehicle). Set the parking brake and shift the shift lever to P.
Vehicles with a multi-mode manual transmission or a man-
ual transmission: Stop the engine. Set the parking brake
and shift the shift lever to N.
Remove the mud, snow or sand from around the front
wheels.
Place wood, stones or some other material under the front
wheels to help provide traction.
Restart the engine (except hybrid vehicle) or hybrid system
(hybrid vehicle).
Vehicles with a hybrid transmission or a Multidrive: Shift the
shift lever to the D or R and carefully apply the accelerator
to free the vehicle.
Vehicles with a multi-mode manual transmission: Shift the
shift lever to E, M or R and carefully apply the accelerator to
free the vehicle.
Vehicles with a manual transmission: Shift the shift lever to
1 or R and carefully apply the accelerator to free the vehi-
cle.

NOTICE
To avoid damage to the transmission and other components
Avoid spinning the front wheels and depressing the accelerator pedal
more than necessary.
If the vehicle remains stuck even after these procedures are performed,
the vehicle may require towing to be freed.
