Stopping the engine
Vehicles with a Multidrive
Stop the vehicle.
Shift the shift lever to P.
Set the parking brake. (P. 269)
Release the brake pedal.
Press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.
Check that the smart entry & start system indicator light
(green) is off.
Vehicle with a multi-mode manual transmission
Stop the vehicle.
Shift the shift lever to E, M or R.

While depressing the clutch pedal, stop the vehicle.

When stopping the engine with the shift lever in a position other
than P (vehicles with a Multidrive)
If the engine is stopped with the shift lever in a position other than P,
the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will not be turned off but instead
be turned to ACCESSORY mode. Perform the following procedure to
turn the switch off:
Check that the parking brake is set.
Shift the shift lever to P.
Check that the smart entry & start system indicator light
(green) flashes slowly and then press the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch once.
Check that the smart entry & start system indicator light
(green) is off.
Auto power off function
Vehicles with a Multidrive
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode (the engine is
not running) for more than an hour with the shift lever in P, the “ENGINE
START STOP” switch will automatically turn off. However, this function can-
not entirely prevent battery discharge. Do not leave the vehicle with the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for
long periods of time when the engine is not running.
Vehicle with a multi-mode manual transmission and manual transmis-
sion
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode (the engine is
not running) for more than an hour, the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will
automatically turn off. However, this function cannot entirely prevent battery
discharge. Do not leave the vehicle with the “ENGINE START STOP” switch
in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for long periods of time when the
engine is not running.

If the engine does not start
The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. (P. 155)
Contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified
and equipped professional.
Steering lock
After turning the “ENGINE START STOP” switch off and opening and closing
the doors, the steering wheel will be locked due to the steering lock function.
Operating the “ENGINE START STOP” switch again automatically cancels
the steering lock.
When the steering lock cannot be released
Vehicles with a Multidrive: Check that the
shift lever is securely set in P. The engine
may not start if the shift lever is displaced
out of P. The smart entry & start system
indicator light (green) will flash quickly.

NOTICE
To prevent battery discharge
Do not leave the “ENGINE START STOP” switch in ACCESSORY or IGNI-
TION ON mode for long periods of time without the engine running.
If the smart entry & start system indicator light (green) is illuminated, the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch is not off. When exiting the vehicle,
always check that the “ENGINE START STOP” switch is off.
On vehicles with a Multidrive, do not stop the engine when the shift lever is
in a position other than P. If the engine is stopped in another shift lever
position, the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will not be turned off but
instead be turned to ACCESSORY mode. If the vehicle is left in ACCES-
SORY mode, battery discharge may occur.
When starting the engine
Do not race a cold engine.
If the engine becomes difficult to start or stalls frequently, have your vehi-
cle checked by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional immediately.
Symptoms indicating a malfunction with the “ENGINE START STOP”
switch
If the “ENGINE START STOP” switch seems to be operating somewhat dif-
ferently than usual, such as the switch sticking slightly, there may be a mal-
function. Contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional immediately.

Engine (ignition) switch (hybrid vehicle [vehicles without an electronic key])
Starting the hybrid system
Check that the parking brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is set in P.
Firmly depress the brake pedal.
Turn the engine switch to the
“START” position to start the
hybrid system.
Continue depressing the brake
pedal until the hybrid system is
completely started.
Check that the “READY” indicator is on.
If the “READY” indicator changes from a flashing light to a solid
light and a beep sound, the hybrid system is starting normally.
The vehicle will not move when the “READY” indicator is off.
The vehicle can move when the “READY” indicator is on even if
the engine is stopped. (The gasoline engine starts or stops auto-
matically in accordance with the state of the vehicle.)

Stopping the hybrid system
Stop the vehicle completely.
Shift the shift lever to P. (P. 250)
Set the parking brake. (P. 269)
Turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position to stop the
hybrid system.
Slowly release the brake pedal and check that the
“READY” indicator is off.
Changing the engine switch positions

When stopping the hybrid system with the shift lever in a
position other than P
If the hybrid system is stopped with the shift lever in a position other
than P, the engine switch will not be turned off but instead be turned
to “ACC”. Perform the following procedure to turn the hybrid system
off:
Check that the parking brake is set.

Turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position to stop the
hybrid system.
