If a door is not opened within approximately 60 seconds after the vehicle is
unlocked, the security feature automatically locks the vehicle again.

Before driving
CAUTION
●
On an incline, the back door may suddenly shut after it opens automati-
cally. Make sure the back door is fully open and secure.
● In the following situations, the power back door may detect an abnormali\
ty
and automatic operation may be stopped. In this case, the back door has
to be operated manually. Take extra care in this situation, as the stopped
back door may suddenly shut, causing an accident.
• When the back door contacts an obstacle
• Vehicles without smart key system: When the battery voltage suddenly
drops, such as when the engine switch is turned to the “ON” position or
the hybrid system is started during automatic operation
• Vehicles with smart key system: When the battery voltage suddenly drops, such as when the “POWER” switch is turned to ON mode or the
hybrid system is started during automatic operation
● Do not attach any accessories other than genuine Toyota parts to the back
door. The power back door may not operate, causing itself to malfunction,
or the back door may suddenly shut again after it is opened.
■ Jam protection function (vehicles with power back door)
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may cause death or serious injury.
●Never use any part of your body to intentionally activate the jam protection
function.
● The jam protection function may not work if something gets caught just
before the back door fully closes. Be careful not to catch fingers or any-
thing else.
● The jam protection function may not work depending on the shape of the
object that is caught. Be careful not to catch fingers or anything else.

Before driving
Alarm
The system sounds the alarm and flashes the lights when forcible
entry is detected.
■Triggering of the alarm
The alarm is triggered in the fo llowing situations when the alarm
is set.
● A locked door is unlocked or opened in any way other than
using the entry function (vehicles with a smart key system) or
wireless remote control or mechanical key. (The doors will
lock again automatically.)
● The hood is opened.
● The locked glass hatch is opened in any way other than using
the wireless remote control door lock function or entry function
(vehicles with smart key system).
● The battery is reconnected.
■ Setting the alarm system
Vehicles without a Display Audio system or navigation system
Close the doors, glass hatch
and hood, and lock all doors.
The system will be set auto-
matically after 30 seconds.

System maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free type alarm system.
■ Items to check before locking the vehicle
To prevent unexpected triggering of the alarm and vehicle theft, make sure
of the following.
●Nobody is in the vehicle.
● The windows and moon roof are closed before the alarm is set.
● No valuables or other personal items are left in the vehicle.
■ Triggering of the alarm
The alarm may be triggered in the following situations. (Stopping the alarm
deactivates the alarm system.)
■ Panic mode

■ When the battery is disconnected
Be sure to cancel the alarm system.
If the battery is disconnected before canceling the alarm, the system may be
triggered when the battery is reconnected.
●A person inside the vehicle opens a
door or the hood when the vehicle is
locked.
● The 12-volt battery is recharged or
replaced when the vehicle is locked.

■Alarm-operated door lock
●When the alarm is operating, the door s are locked automatically to pre-
vent intruders.
● Do not leave the key inside the vehicle when the alarm is operating, and
make sure the key is not inside the vehicle when recharging or replacing
the 12-volt battery.
■ When using the mechani cal key to unlock the doors
Deactivate the alarm.
NOTICE
■ To ensure the system operates correctly
Do not modify or remove the system. If modified or removed, the proper
operation of the system cannot be guaranteed.

■Operating your vehicle in a foreign country
Comply with the relevant vehicle registration laws and confirm the availability
of the correct fuel. ( P. 613)
■ For efficient use
●Put the shift lever into D when driving
In the N position, the gasoline engine operates but electricity cannot be
generated. The hybrid battery (traction battery) will be discharged requir-
ing unnecessary engine power to recharge.
● Drive your vehicle smoothly
Avoid abrupt acceleration and deceleration. Gradual acceleration and
deceleration will make more effective use of the electric motor (traction
motor) without having to use gasoline engine power.
● Avoid repeated acceleration
Repeated acceleration consumes hybrid battery (traction battery) power,
resulting in poor acceleration. Battery power can be restored by driving
with the accelerator pedal slightly released.
● Put the shift lever into P when parking
In the N position, the hybrid battery (traction battery) does not recharge.
Leaving the shift lever in N for an extended period of time may discharge
the hybrid battery. The vehicle cannot run if the hybrid battery is dis-
charged.
■ Eco-friendly driving
Eco-friendly driving can be achieved by
driving within the scope of Variable
Economy Zone. Variable Economy
Zone will come on when the shift lever
is in D. Variable Economy Zone will go
off when the shift lever is shifted to a
position other than D.

■ When the “POWER” switch indicator flashes in amber
The system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by your
Toyota dealer immediately.
■ If the “READY” indicator does not come on
If the “READY” indicator does not come on when you press the “POWER”
switch with the shift lever in P and the brake pedal depressed, contact your
Toyota dealer immediately.
■ Auto power off function
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than an hour with the
shift lever in P, the “POWER” switch will automatically turn off.
■ When the ambient temperature is low, such as during winter driving
conditions
It may take time until the “READY” indicator comes on.
■ Sounds and vibrations specific to a hybrid vehicle

Make sure that the steering wheel lock is
released.
To release the steering wheel lock, gently
turn the wheel left or right while pressing
the “POWER” switch.
