Manual transmission (diesel engine)
Check that the parking brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is set in “N”.
Sit in the driver’s seat and firmly depress the clutch pedal.
Turn the engine switch to the “ON” position.

After indicator light goes out, turn the engine switch
to the “START” position and start the engine.

ure to exercise judgment may lead to an accident.

To prevent damage to the transmission
Do not lift up the ring section except when shifting the lever to “R”.
Shift the shift lever to “R” only when the vehicle is stationary.
Do not shift the shift lever to “R” without
depressing the clutch pedal.

Parking brake
Parking brake operation
Vehicles with smart entry & start system
When the “ENGINE START STOP” switch is not in IGNITION ON mode,
the parking brake cannot be released using the parking brake switch.
Vehicles without smart entry & start system
When the engine switch is not in the “ON” position, the parking brake can-
not be released using the parking brake switch.
Automatic release function (vehicles with a manual transmission)
When starting, if the shift lever is engaged, the accelerator pedal and clutch
pedal are operated while the parking brake is applied, the parking brake will
be automatically released, thus making starting off easier.

Storage precautions
Observe the following precautions.
Failing to do so may result in death or serious injury.
Do not place cargo or luggage in or on the following locations as the item
may get under the clutch, brake or accelerator pedal and prevent the ped-
als from being depressed properly, block the driver’s vision, or hit the
driver or passengers, causing an accident.
• Driver’s feet
• Front passenger or rear seats (when stacking items)
• Package tray (sedan)
• Luggage cover (wagon)
• Instrument panel
• Dashboard
• Auxiliary box or tray that has no lid
Secure all items in the occupant compartment, as they may shift and injure
someone during an accident or sudden braking.
Never allow anyone to ride in the enlarged trunk or luggage compartment.
It is not designed for passengers. They should ride in their seats with their
seat belts properly fastened. Otherwise, they are much more likely to suf-
fer death or serious injury, in the event of sudden braking, sudden swerv-
ing or an accident.
