Multidrive and multi-mode manual transmission: Stop the vehicle.
Manual transmission: While depressing the clutch pedal, stop the
vehicle.
Multidrive: Shift the shift lever to P.
Multi-mode manual transmission: Shift the shift lever to E, M or R.
Manual transmission: Shift the shift lever to N.
Set the parking brake. (P. 306)
Press the engine switch.
Vehicles without a multi-information display: Release the brake
pedal (Multidrive and multi-mode manual transmission) or clutch
pedal (manual transmission) and check that the smart entry & start
system indicator light (green) is off.
Vehicles with a multi-information display: Release the brake pedal
(Multidrive and multi-mode manual transmission) or clutch pedal
(manual transmission) and check that “POWER ON” on the multi-
information display is off.

If the engine is stopped with the shift lever in a position other than P,
the engine switch will not be turned off but instead be turned to
ACCESSORY mode. Perform the following procedure to turn the
switch off:
Check that the parking brake is set.
Shift the shift lever to P.
Vehicles without a multi-information display:
Check that the smart entry & start system indicator light (green)
flashes slowly and then press the engine switch once.
Check that the smart entry & start system indicator light (green) is
off.
Vehicles with a multi-information display:
Check that “POWER ON” and “TURN POWER OFF” are displayed
alternately on the multi-information display and then press the
engine switch once.
Check that “POWER ON” and “TURN POWER OFF” on the multi-
information display are off.
When stopping the engine with the shift lever in a position other
than P (vehicles with a Multidrive)

CAUTION
When starting the hybrid system
Always start the hybrid system while sitting in the driver’s seat. Do not
depress the accelerator pedal while starting the hybrid system under any
circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
Stopping the hybrid system in an emergency
If you want to stop the hybrid system in an emergency while driving the
vehicle, press and hold the power switch for more than 2 seconds, or press
it briefly 3 times or more in succession. (P. 585)
However, do not touch the power switch while driving except in an emer-
gency. Turning the hybrid system off while driving will not cause loss of
steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be
lost. This will make it more difficult to steer and brake, so you should pull
over and stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.
NOTICE
To prevent 12-volt battery discharge
Do not leave the power switch in ACCESSORY or ON mode for long peri-
ods if the hybrid system is not operating.
If the hybrid system is off, but the indicator on the power switch is illumi-
nated, this indicates that the power switch is still turned on. When exiting
the vehicle, always check that the power switch is off.
When starting the hybrid system
Do not depress the accelerator pedal unnecessarily.
If the hybrid system becomes difficult to start, have your vehicle checked
by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional immediately.
Symptoms indicating a malfunction with the power switch
If the power switch seems to be operating somewhat differently than usual,
such as the switch sticking slightly, there may be a malfunction. Contact any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped
professional immediately.

To set the parking brake, fully

Daytime running light system
Except hybrid model
To make your vehicle more visible to other drivers, the front position lights
turn on automatically whenever the engine is started and the parking brake is
released. Daytime running lights are not designed for use at night.
Hybrid model
To make your vehicle more visible to other drivers, the front position lights
turn on automatically whenever the hybrid system is started and the parking
brake is released. Daytime running lights are not designed for use at night.
Headlight control sensor (if equipped)
Automatic light off system
Except hybrid model (vehicles without a smart entry & start system)
When the light switch is in or : The headlights and front fog lights
(if equipped) turn off automatically if the engine switch is turned off.
When the light switch is in : All lights turn off automatically if the engine
switch is turned off.
To turn the lights on again, turn the engine switch to the “ON” position, or turn
the light switch off once and then back to or .
Except hybrid model (vehicles with a smart entry & start system)
When the light switch is in or : The headlights and front fog lights
(if equipped) turn off automatically if the engine switch is turned off.
When the light switch is in : All lights turn off automatically if the engine
switch is turned off.
To turn the lights on again, turn the engine switch to IGNITION ON mode, or
turn the light switch off once and then back to or . The sensor may not function properly if an
object is placed on the sensor, or anything
that blocks the sensor is affixed to the
windshield.
Doing so interferes with the sensor
detecting the level of ambient light and
may cause the automatic headlight sys-
tem to malfunction.

Sensor detection information
Certain vehicle conditions and the surrounding environment may affect the
ability of the sensor to correctly detect obstacles. Particular instances where
this may occur are listed below.
• There is dirt, snow or ice on the sensor.
• A sensor is frozen.
• A sensor is covered in any way.
• The vehicle is leaning considerably to one side.
• On an extremely bumpy road, on an incline, on gravel, or on grass.
• The vicinity of the vehicle is noisy due to vehicle horns, motorcycle
engines, air brakes of large vehicles, or other loud noises producing ultra-
sonic waves.
• There is another vehicle equipped with parking assist sensors in the
vicinity.
• A sensor is coated with a sheet of spray or heavy rain.
• The vehicle is equipped with a fender pole or wireless antenna.
• Towing eyelet is installed.
• A bumper or sensor receives a strong impact.
• The vehicle is approaching a tall or curved curb.
• In harsh sunlight or intense cold weather.
• A non-genuine Toyota suspension (lowered suspension etc.) is installed.
In addition to the examples above, there are instances in which, because of
their shapes, signs and other objects may be judged by the sensor to be
closer than they are.
The shape of the obstacle may prevent the sensor from detecting it. Pay
particular attention to the following obstacles:
• Wires, fences, ropes, etc.
• Cotton, snow and other materials that absorb sound waves
• Sharply-angled objects
• Low obstacles
• Tall obstacles with upper sections projecting outwards in the direction of
your vehicle

CAUTION
When the Stop & Start system is operating
Keep the shift lever in N and apply the brake pedal or parking brake for
safety while the engine is stopped due to the Stop & Start system (while
Stop & Start indicator is on).
Unexpected accidents may occur due to the automatic engine start func-
tion.
Do not leave the vehicle while the engine is stopped due to the Stop &
Start system (while Stop & Start indicator is on).
Unexpected accidents may occur due to the automatic engine start func-
tion.
Ensure that the engine is not stopped by the Stop & Start system while the
vehicle is in a poorly ventilated area. The engine may restart due to the
automatic engine start function, causing exhaust gases to collect and
enter the vehicle and resulting in death or a serious health hazard.
NOTICE
To ensure the system operates correctly
If any one of the following situations occurs, the Stop & Start system may
not operate correctly, thus, please have your vehicle checked by any autho-
rized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped pro-
fessional.
While the driver’s seat belt is fastened, the driver’s and front passenger’s
seat belt reminder light flashes.
Even when the driver’s seat belt is not fastened, the driver’s and front pas-
senger’s seat belt reminder light remains off.
Even when the driver’s door is closed, the open door warning light comes
on, or the interior light comes on when the interior light switch is in the door
position.
Even when the driver’s door is opened, the open door warning light does
not come on, or the interior light does not come on when the interior light
switch is in the door position.
