WARNING
Make sure that nobody can become trapped
when you activate the EASY-ENTRY/EXIT
feature. If there is a risk of someone becoming
trapped, stop the adjustmen
tprocedure. To

R press the steering column adjustment
button.
R press one of the memory function position
buttons.
The steering column stops moving
immediately.
Do not keep the memory function position
button pressed as this will start the memory
function and set the steering wheel and seat
in motion.
Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle. They could open the driver's door and
thereby unintentionally activate the EASY-
ENTRY/EXIT feature and become trapped. G
WARNING
Let the system complete the adjustment
procedure before setting the vehicle in
motion. All steering wheel adjustment must
be completed before setting the vehicle in
motion. Driving off with the steering wheel
still adjusting could cause the driver to lose
control of the vehicle.
The EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature makes getting
in and out of your vehicle easier.
You can activate and deactivate the EASY-
ENTRY/EXIT feature in the on-board
computer (Y page 206).

Position of the steering wheel for

When you close the driver's door with the
ignition switched on, the steering wheel is

The last position of the steering wheel is
stored when you switch off the ignition or
when you store the setting with the memory

Crash-responsive EASY-EXI Tfeature If the crash-responsive EASY-EXIT feature is
triggered in an accident, the steering column
will move upwards when the driver's door is
opened. This occurs irrespective of the
position of the SmartKey in the ignition lock.
This makes it easier to exi tthe vehicle and
rescue the occupants.
The crash-responsive EASY-EXIT feature is
only operational if the EASY-EXIT/ENTRY

WARNING
The exterior mirrors reduce the size of the
image. Objects are actually closer than they
appear. You could misjudge the distance from
vehicles driving behind and cause an
accident, e.g. when changing lane. For this
reason, make sure of the actual distance from
the vehicle driving behind by glancing over

Replacing the wiper blades

Turn the SmartKey to position 1or 2in the
ignition lock.
X Set the windshield wipers to
position 0015.
X Whe nthe wiper arms have reached a
vertical position, turn the SmartKey to
position 0and remove it from the ignition
lock.
X Fold the windshield wiper arms away from
the windshield. X
Press both release clips 0004.
X Fold wiper blade 0003in the direction of
arrow 0024away from wiper arm 0023.
X Remove wiper blade 0003in the direction of

Installing the wiper blades X
Position new wiper blade 0003with
recess 0022on lug 0021.

KEYLESS-GO
General notes
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO are equipped with
aS
martKey featuring an integrated KEYLESS-
GO start function and a detachable Start/
Stop button.
You can switch the engine on and off with the
Start/Stop button. The Start/Stop button
must be inserted into the ignitio nlock and the
SmartKey must be in the vehicle.
Pressing the Start/Stop button several times
in succession corresponds to the different
SmartKey positions in the ignition lock. This
is only the case if you are not depressing the
brake pedal.
If you depress the brake pedal and press the
Start/Stop button, the engine starts
immediately.
The Start/Stop button can be removed from
the ignition lock. Then, you can insert the
SmartKey into the ignition lock.
i You do not have to remove the Start/Stop
button from the ignition lock when you
leave the vehicle. You should, however,
always take the SmartKey with you when
leaving the vehicle. As long as the
SmartKey is in the vehicle:
R the vehicle can be started using the
Start/Stop button and
R electrically powered equipment can be
operated.
i The engine can be turned off while the
vehicle is in motion by pressing and holding
the Start/Stop button for approximately
three seconds. This function operates
independently from the ECO start/stop

Switching on the ignition

i The power supply is switched off if you
press Start/Stop button 0003twice when in

As soo nas the ignition is switched on, all the
indicator lamps in the instrument cluster light
up. If an indicator lamp does not go out after
starting the engine or lights up while driving,
there may be a technical problem
(Y page 244).
Removing the Start/Stop button You can remove the Start/Stop button from
the ignition lock and start the vehicle as
normal using the SmartKey.
X Remove Start/Stop button 0003from ignition
lock 0004.
i You do not have to remove the Start/Stop
button from the ignition lock when you
leave the vehicle. Starting the engine

WARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Inhaling these exhaust gases leads to poisoning. There
is a risk of fatal injury. Therefore never leave
the engine running in enclosed spaces
without sufficient ventilation.
! Do not depress the accelerator pedal
when starting the engine.
i AMG vehicles: the exhaust flap of the
exhaust system will be checked after every
cold start. Aresulting noise can be heard
during this process.
i During a cold start, the engine runs at
higher speeds to enable the catalytic
converter to reach its operating
temperature. The sound of the engine may
change during this time.
Manual transmission X
Depress the brake pedal and keep it
depressed.
X Fully depress the clutch pedal.
X Shift to neutral N.
i You can only start the engine when the
clutch pedal is fully depressed.
Automatic transmission X
Shift the transmission to position P.
The transmission position display in the
multifunction display shows P.
i You can also start the engine when the
transmission is in position N.
Starting procedure with the SmartKey X
Turn the key to position 3in the ignition
lock (Y page 135)a nd release it as soo nas
the engine is running.
i To start the engine using the SmartKey
instead of KEYLESS-GO, pull the Start/

Using KEYLESS-GO to start the engine

WARNING
As long as the SmartKey is in your vehicle, the
vehicle can be started. Therefore, neve rleave
children unattended in the vehicle, as they
could otherwise accidentally start the engine.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Do
not leave children unattended in the vehicle,
or with access to an unlocked vehicle. A
child's unsupervised access to a vehicle could
result in an acciden tand/o rserious personal
injury.
i The Start/Stop button can be used to
start the vehicle manually without inserting
the SmartKey into the ignition lock. The
Start/Stop button must be inserted into
the ignition lock and the SmartKey must be
in the vehicle. This mode for starting the
engine operates independently of the ECO
start/stop automatic engine start function.
X Depress the brake pedal and keep it
depressed.
X Press Start/Stop button (Y page 136)
once.
The engine starts. Pulling away
Manual transmission !
Change gear in good time and avoid
spinning the wheels. You could otherwise
damage the vehicle.
X Depress the brake pedal and keep it
depressed.
X Fully depress the clutch pedal.
X Shift to either first gear or reverse gear R.
X Release the electric parking brake
(Y page 156).
X Release the brake pedal.
X Slowly release the clutch pedal and gently
depress the accelerator pedal. i
The vehicle locks centrally once you have
pulled away .The locking knobs in the doors
drop down.
You can open the doors from the inside at
any time.
You can also deactivate the automatic
locking feature (Y page 206).
Automatic transmission G
WARNING
If the engine speed is above the idling speed
and you engage transmission position Dor
R, the vehicle could pull away suddenly. There
is a risk of an accident.
When engaging transmission position Dor R,
always firmly depress the brake pedal and do
not simultaneously accelerate.
i It is only possible to shift the transmission
from position Pto the desired position if
you depress the brake pedal. Only then is
the shift lock released.
X Depress the brake pedal and keep it
depressed.
X Shift the transmission to position Dor R.
X Release the brake pedal.
X Carefully depress the accelerator pedal.
The electric parking brake (Y page 156) is
automatically released.
The red 0005(USA only) or 000A(Canada
only) indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster goes out.
i The vehicle locks centrally once you have
pulled away.T he locking knobs in the doors

Hill start assist
G
WARNING
After a short time, hil lstar tassist will no
longer brake your vehicle and it could roll
away. There is a risk of an accident and injury.
Therefore, quickly move your foot from the
brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.N ever
leave the vehicle when it is held by hill start
assist.
Hill start assist helps you when pulling away
forwards or in reverse on an uphill gradient.
It holds the vehicle for a short time after you
have removed your foot from the brake pedal.
This gives you enough time to move your foot
from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal
and to depress it before the vehicle begins to
roll.
X Remove your foot from the brake pedal.
The vehicle is then held for about a second.
X Pull away.
Hill start assist will not function if:
R you are pulling away on a level road or on
a downhill gradient.
R on vehicles with automatic transmission,
the transmission is in N.
R the electric parking brake is applied.
R ESP ®
is malfunctioning. ECO start/stop function
Important safety notes G
WARNING
If the engine is switched off automatically and
you exit the vehicle, the engine is restarted
automatically. The vehicle may begin moving.
There is a risk of accident and injury.
If you wish to exit the vehicle, always turn off
the ignition and secure the vehicle against
rolling away. General notes The ECO start/stop function switches the
engine off automatically when the vehicle
stops moving.
The engine starts automatically when the
driver wants to pull away again. The ECO
start/stop function thereby helps you to
reduce the fuel consumption and emissions
of your vehicle.
Every time you switch on the engine using the
SmartKey or the Start/Stop button, the ECO
start/stop function is activated.
AMG vehicles:
the ECO start/stop function
is only available in drive program C.
The system is operational if all conditions for
automatic engine switch-off have been
fulfilled (Y page 141)a nd the000Esymbol is
shown in the multifunctio ndisplay.
AMG vehicles: the AMG menu in the
multifunction display additionally shows
Stop/Start Active message.
If conditions for automatic engine switch-off
have not been fulfilled (Y page 141), the
000E symbol will not be shown.
AMG vehicles: the AMG menu in the
multifunction display also shows the Stop/ Start Inactive message.
If the ECO start/stop function has been
manually deactivated (Y page 140) or a
malfunction has caused the system to be
deactivated, the 000Esymbol is not
displayed.
AMG vehicles: theStop/Start Active or
Stop/Start Inactive display message
goes out in the AMG men uofthe
multifunction display.
i AMG vehicles: If automatic cylinder shut-
off is active in drive program C, the number
of active cylinders 4is also shown in the
000E symbol. This means that the engine
is operating with four cylinders.
If cylinder shut-off is not active, the engine
will operate with all eight cylinders. In this Driving

Activating (AMG vehicles)
X Press button 0003.
Indicator lamp 0004lights up. If drive
program Sor Mis active, the automatic
transmission switches to drive program C.
If all conditions for automatic engine
switch-off (Y page 141) are fulfilled, the
000E symbol is shown in the multifunction
display. In addition, the Stop/Start Active message is shown in the AMG
menu in the multifunction display.
If not all conditions for automatic engine
switch-off (Y page 141) are fulfilled, the
000E symbol is not shown in the
multifunction display. If this is the case, the
ECO start/stop function is not available. In
addition, the Stop/Start Inactive message is shown in the AMG menu in the
multifunction display.
i If indicator lamp 0004is off, the ECO start/
stop function has been deactivated
manually or as the result of a malfunction.
The engine will then not be switched off
automatically when the vehicle stops.
i All vehicles (except AMG vehicles): the
ECO start/stop function is activated each
time the engine is switched on.
i AMG vehicles: each time the engine is
started, the ECO start/stop function
switches to the status (on or off) that was
selected before switching off the engine. 140
