handle on the trunk lid/tailgate.

system
You can change the settings of the locking
system.

This means that only the driver's door
and the fuel filler flap are unlocked when the
vehicle is unlocked. This is useful if you
frequently travel on your own.
X To change the setting: press and hold
down the % and & buttons on the
SmartKey simultaneously for
approximately

six seconds until the battery
check lamp flashes twice ( Y page 81).
i If the setting of the locking system is
changed within the signal range of the
vehicle,

pressing the & or % button:
R locks or
R unlocks the vehicle The SmartKey now functions as follows:
X
To unlock the driver's door: press the
% button once.
X To unlock centrally: press the %
button twice.
X To lock centrally: press the & button.
The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as
follows:
X To unlock the driver's door: touch the
inner surface of the door handle on the
driver's door.
X To unlock centrally: touch the inner
surface of the door handle on the front-
passenger door or the rear door.
X To lock centrally: touch the outer sensor
surface on one of the door handles.
X To restore the factory settings: press
and
hold down the % and & buttons
simultaneously for approximately six
seconds until the battery check lamp
flashes twice ( Y page 81). Mechanical key
General notes If the vehicle can no longer be locked or
unlocked with the SmartKey, use the
mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door or the trunk lid/
tailgate, the anti-theft alarm system will be
triggered (
Y page 75).
There are several ways to turn off the alarm:
X To turn the alarm off with the
SmartKey:

press the % or & button
on the SmartKey.
or
X Insert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
or
X To deactivate the alarm with KEYLESS-
GO: press the Start/Stop button in the80
SmartKey

vehicle.

X Lock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey must be outside the
vehicle.
If you unlock the vehicle using the mechanical
key, the fuel filler flap will not be unlocked
automatically.
X To unlock the fuel filler flap: insert the
SmartKey into the ignition lock.

Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have
the

batteries replaced at a qualified specialist
workshop.
Checking the battery X
Press the & or % button.
The battery is working properly if battery
check lamp : lights up briefly.
The battery is discharged if battery check
lamp : does not light up briefly.
X Change the battery ( Y page 81).
i If
the SmartKey battery is checked within
the signal reception range of the vehicle,
pressing the & or % button:
R locks or
R unlocks the vehicle
i You can get a battery in any qualified
specialist workshop.
Replacing the battery You require a CR 2025 3 V cell battery.

Problems with the SmartKey

Try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control
function of the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the
driver's door handle from close range and press the % or

If this does not work:
X Check the SmartKey battery (Y page 81) and replace it if
necessary ( Y page 81).
X Lock ( Y page 86) or unlock ( Y page 86) the vehicle using
the mechanical key. The SmartKey is faulty.
X
Lock ( Y page 86) or unlock ( Y page 86) the vehicle using
the mechanical key.
X Have the SmartKey checked at a qualified specialist workshop. You can no longer lock
or unlock the vehicle
using KEYLESS-GO. KEYLESS-GO is in standby mode because the vehicle has not been
unlocked for a long time.
X
Pull the door handle and then turn the SmartKey to position 2
in the ignition lock. There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.
X
Lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the
SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the % or & button.There is a malfunction with KEYLESS-GO.
X
Lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the

SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the % or & button.
X Have KEYLESS-GO checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
If this does not work:
X Check the SmartKey battery (Y page 81) and replace it if
necessary ( Y page 81).
X Lock ( Y page 86) or unlock ( Y page 86) the vehicle using
the mechanical key. You have lost a
SmartKey. X
Have the SmartKey deactivated at a qualified specialist
workshop.
X Report the loss immediately to the vehicle insurers.
X If necessary, have the locks changed as well. SmartKey

The engine cannot be
started using the
SmartKey. The steering lock is mechanically blocked.

Remove the SmartKey and reinsert it into the ignition lock. While
doing this, turn the steering wheel in both directions. The engine cannot be
started
using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey is in
the vehicle. A door is open. Therefore, the SmartKey cannot be detected as
easily.
X
Close the door and try to start the vehicle again. There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.
X
Start your vehicle with the SmartKey in the ignition lock.84

WARNING
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take
the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.
Do not leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle, even if they are secured in a child
restraint
system, and do not give them access
to an unlocked vehicle. A child's unsupervised
access to a vehicle could result in an accident
and/or serious personal injury. They could:
R injure themselves on vehicle parts
R be seriously or fatally injured by extreme
heat or cold
R injure themselves or have an accident with
vehicle equipment that may still be in
operation even after the SmartKey has
been removed from the ignition, such as the
seat adjustment, steering wheel
adjustment or memory function.
If children open a door, they could cause
severe or even fatal injury to other persons; if
they get out of the vehicle, they could injure
themselves when doing so or be seriously or
even fatally injured by any passing traffic.
Do not expose the child restraint system to
direct sunlight. The child restraint system's
metal parts, for example, could become very
hot, and a child could be burned on these
parts. G
WARNING
Do not carry heavy or hard objects in the
passenger compartment or trunk/cargo
compartment unless they are firmly secured
in place.
Unsecured or improperly positioned cargo
increases a child's risk of injury in the event
of
R strong braking maneuvers
R sudden changes of direction
R an accident Unlocking and opening doors from
the inside
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked.
You

can only open the rear doors from inside
the vehicle if they are not secured by the
child-proof locks (Y page 66). X

You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle

all the doors are closed, the vehicle locks.
You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally from
the
inside if the vehicle has been locked with

X Wagon: allow the tailgate to drop into the
lock.
X If necessary, lock the vehicle with

trunk/cargo compartment, the trunk lid/
tailgate will not lock.
Sedan: the trunk lid then opens again. Opening/closing automatically from

WARNING
Ensure that the trunk lid/tailgate is closed
when the engine is running and the vehicle is
in motion. Among other dangers, deadly
carbon monoxide (CO) may enter the vehicle
interior and cause unconsciousness and even
death.
! The trunk lid/tailgate swings upwards
and to the rear when opened. Therefore,
make sure that there is sufficient clearance
above and behind the trunk lid/tailgate.
Opening You can open the trunk lid/tailgate
automatically using the SmartKey or the
handle in the trunk lid/tailgate.
X
Press and hold the F
button on the key
until the trunk lid/tailgate opens.
or
X If the trunk lid/tailgate is unlocked, pull the
handle

of the trunk lid/tailgate and let it go
again immediately ( Y page 88). Closing G
WARNING
Monitor the closing procedure carefully to
make sure no one is in danger of being
injured. To prevent possible personal injury,
always

keep hands and fingers away from the
trunk opening when closing the trunk lid. Be
especially careful when small children are
around. To stop the closing procedure, do one
of the following:
R Press button F on the SmartKey.
R Press the remote trunk opening/closing
switch (on the driver's door).
R Press the trunk closing switch.
R Press the KEYLESS-GO locking/closing
switch.
R Pull the trunk lid handle.
Even with the SmartKey removed from the
starter switch or the SmartKey with KEYLESS-
GO removed from the vehicle, the remote
trunk opening/closing switch can be
operated. Therefore, do not leave children
unattended in the vehicle, or with access to
an unlocked vehicle. A child's unsupervised
access to a vehicle could result in an accident

i If you leave a KEYLESS-GO key in the
trunk/cargo compartment, the trunk lid/

WARNING
Keep an eye on the area at the rear end of the
vehicle when operating the trunk lid/tailgate
with
the remote operating switch on the door.
Monitor the entire closing procedure to
ensure that there is no risk of injury to anyone
near the vehicle.
Release the switch on the door to interrupt
the closing procedure.
The remote operating switch can also be used
if the SmartKey has been removed from the
starter switch or the KEYLESS-GO key has
been removed from the vehicle. Never leave
children with no adult supervision in the
vehicle or with access to an unlocked vehicle.
If unsupervised children have access to a
vehicle, it could lead to an accident and/or
serious injury. G
WARNING

tailgate : until the tailgate is closed.
You can open and close the trunk lid/tailgate
from the driver's seat when the vehicle is
stationary and unlocked. Limiting the opening angle of the
tailgate (Wagon)
Important safety notes !
Make
sure there is sufficient clearance to
open the tailgate fully when setting the
opening angle. The tailgate could otherwise
be damaged. Ideally, set the opening angle
outside.
Arming You can limit the opening angle of the
tailgate. This is possible in the top half of its
opening range, up to approximately

8 in

To open the tailgate: pull the handle on
the tailgate.
X To stop the opening procedure at the
desired
position: press the closing button
(Y page 89) in the tailgate or pull the handle
on the outside of the tailgate again.
X To store the position: press and hold the

button in the tailgate until you hear
a short tone.
The opening angle limiter is activated. The
tailgate will now stop in the stored position
when opening.
Disarming X

You
can lock the trunk separately. If you then
unlock the vehicle centrally, the trunk
remains locked and cannot be opened.
X Close the trunk lid.

lock as far as the stop.
X Turn the mechanical key clockwise from
position 1 to position 2.
X Remove the mechanical key.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey. Unlocking the trunk (Sedan)
! The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened.

Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.
If the trunk cannot be unlocked with the
SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO, use the
mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the trunk lid, the anti-theft alarm system
