If you do not open the vehicle within approx-
imately 40 seconds of unlocking:
R the vehicle is locked again.
R the anti-theft system is primed again.
XTo lock centrally: press button :.
The key centrally locks/unlocks:
R the doors
R the boot lid
R the fuel filler flap
When unlocking, the turn signals flash once.
When locking, they flash three times.
i When it is dark, the surround lighting also
comes on if it is activated in the on-board
computer ( Y page 222).
i You can also set an audible signal to con-
firm that the vehicle has been locked. The
audible signal can be activated and deacti-
vated using the on-board computer
( Y page 223).
XTo open the boot lid automatically: press
and hold button ; until the boot lid opens
( Y page 85).Changing the settings of the locking
system
You can change the settings of the locking
system. This means that only the driver's door
and the fuel filler flap are unlocked when the
vehicle is unlocked. This is useful if you fre-
quently travel on your own.XTo change the setting: press and hold
down the % and & buttons simulta-
neously for approximately six seconds until
battery check lamp ( Y page 78) flashes
twice.
i If the setting of the locking system is
changed within the signal range of the vehi-
cle, pressing the & or % button:
R locks or
R unlocks the vehicle
The key now functions as follows:
XTo unlock the driver's door: press the
% button once.XTo unlock centrally: press the % but-
ton twice.XTo lock centrally: press the & button.XTo restore the factory settings: press
and hold down the % and & buttons
simultaneously for approximately six sec-
onds until the battery check lamp flashes
twice ( Y page 78).
Emergency key element
General notes
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the key, use the emergency key element.
If you use the emergency key element to
unlock and open the driver's door, the anti-
theft alarm system will be triggered
( Y page 71).
There are several ways to turn off the alarm:
XPress the % or & button on the key.
or
XInsert the key into the ignition lock.Key77Opening and closingZ

If you unlock the vehicle using the emergency
key element, the fuel filler flap will not be
unlocked automatically.XTo unlock the fuel filler flap: insert the
key into the ignition lock.
Removing the emergency key element
XPush release catch : in the direction of
the arrow and at the same time, remove
emergency key element ; from the key.

Battery of the key
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Batteries contain toxic and corrosive substan-
ces. If batteries are swallowed, it can result in
severe health problems. There is a risk of fatal
injury.
Keep batteries out of the reach of children. If
a battery is swallowed, seek medical attention
immediately.
HEnvironmental noteBatteries contain pollutants.
It is illegal to dispose of them
with the household rubbish.
They must be collected sep-arately and disposed of in an
environmentally responsible
recycling system.Dispose of batteries in an
environmentally responsible
manner. Take discharged
batteries to a qualified spe-
cialist workshop or to a col-
lection point for used batter-
ies.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have
the batteries replaced at a qualified specialist
workshop.
Checking the battery
XPress the & or % button.
The battery is working properly if battery
check lamp : lights up briefly.
The battery is discharged if battery check
lamp : does not light up briefly.XReplace the battery ( Y page 79).
i If the key battery is checked within the
signal reception range of the vehicle, press-
ing the & or % button:
R locks or
R unlocks the vehicle
i You can obtain a battery from any quali-
fied specialist workshop.

tivate the double lock function by deactivat-
ing the interior motion sensor ( Y page 72).
The doors can then be opened from the inside
after the vehicle has been locked from the
outside. You can open the rear doors from
inside the vehicle if they are not secured by
the child-proof locks ( Y page 63). The anti-
theft alarm system is triggered if the door is
opened from the inside. Switch off the alarm
( Y page 71).
Unlocking and opening the doors
from the inside
i When a door is opened, the side window
on that side opens slightly. When the door
is closed, the side window is raised again.
! The side windows will not open/close if
the battery is discharged or if the side win-
dows have iced up. It will then not be pos-
sible to close the door. Do not attempt to
force the door to close. You could other-
wise damage the door or the side window.
XPull door handle ;.
If the door is locked, locking knob : pops
up. The door is unlocked and can be
opened.
For all countries except the United King-
dom:
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked.
If the vehicle has previously been locked with
the key, opening a door from the inside will
trigger the anti-theft alarm system. Switch off
the alarm ( Y page 71).
You can only open the rear doors from inside
the vehicle if they are not secured by the
child-proof locks ( Y page 63).
Only for the United Kingdom: if the vehicle
has been locked with the key, the double lock
function is activated as standard. It is then
not possible to open the doors from inside the
vehicle. You can deactivate the double lock
function by deactivating the interior motion
sensor ( Y page 72). The doors can then be
opened from the inside after the vehicle has
been locked from the outside. You can open
the rear doors from inside the vehicle if they
are not secured by the child-proof locks
( Y page 63). The anti-theft alarm system is
triggered if the door is opened from the
inside. Switch off the alarm ( Y page 71).
Centrally locking and unlocking the
vehicle from the inside
You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle
from the inside. This can be useful if you wish
to lock the vehicle before pulling away, for
example.
XTo unlock: press button :.XTo lock: press button ;.
If all the doors and the boot lid are closed,
the vehicle locks.
This does not lock or unlock the fuel filler flap.
You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally from
the inside if the vehicle has been locked with
the key.

XTake the emergency key element out of the
key ( Y page 77).XInsert the emergency key element into the
lock of the driver's door as far as it will go.XTurn the emergency key element anti-
clockwise to position 1.
The door is unlocked.
i On right-hand-drive vehicles, turn the
emergency key element clockwise.
XTurn the emergency key element back and
remove it.XInsert the emergency key element into the
key.
Locking the vehicle (emergency key
element)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
key, use the emergency key element.
XOpen the driver's door.XClose the front-passenger door, the rear
doors and the boot lid.XPress the locking button ( Y page 82).XCheck whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rear doors
are still visible. Press down the locking
knobs manually, if necessary ( Y page 82).XClose the driver's door.XTake the emergency key element out of the
key ( Y page 77).XInsert the emergency key element into the
lock of the driver's door as far as it will go.XTurn the emergency key element clockwise
as far as it will go to position 1.

On right-hand-drive vehicles, turn the
emergency key element anti-clockwise.
XTurn the emergency key element back and
remove it.XMake sure that the doors and the boot lid
are locked.XInsert the emergency key element into the
key.
i If you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-
theft alarm system is not primed.
Boot
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the boot
lid is open when the engine is running, espe-
cially if the vehicle is in motion. There is a risk
of poisoning.
Always switch off the engine before opening
the boot lid. Never drive with the boot lid
open.
GWARNING
If persons (particularly children) are exposed
to heat or cold for a prolonged period, there
is a risk of serious or even fatal injuries. Never

Auxiliary heating
Important safety notesGDANGER
If the exhaust pipe is blocked or sufficient
ventilation is not possible, toxic exhaust
fumes can enter the vehicle, especially car-
bon monoxide. This is the case, e.g. in
enclosed spaces, or if the vehicle is stuck in
snow. There is a risk of fatal injuries.
You should switch off the auxiliary heating in
enclosed spaces which do not have an extrac-
tion system, e.g. a garage. If the vehicle is
stuck in snow and you must leave the auxiliary
heating running, keep the exhaust pipe and
the area around the vehicle clear of snow. To
guarantee a sufficient supply of fresh air, open
a window on the side of the vehicle away from
the wind.
GWARNING
When the auxiliary heating is switched on,
parts of the vehicle can become very hot.
Flammable material such as leaves, grass or
twigs may ignite if they come into contact with
hot parts of the exhaust system for extended
periods. There is a risk of fire.
When the auxiliary heating is switched on,
make sure that no flammable material can
come into contact with hot vehicle compo-
nents.
! Operating the auxiliary heating/ventila-
tion draws on the vehicle battery. After you
have heated or ventilated the vehicle a
maximum of two times, drive for a longer
distance.
i Switch the auxiliary heating on regularly
once a month for about ten minutes.
The auxiliary heating heats the air in the vehi-
cle interior to the set temperature. This
occurs without using the heat of the running
engine. The auxiliary heating is operated
directly using the vehicle's fuel. For this rea-
son, the fuel tank must be at least ¼ full to
ensure that the auxiliary heating functions.
The auxiliary heating/ventilation automati-
cally adjusts to changes in temperature and
weather conditions. For this reason, the aux-
iliary heating could switch from ventilation
mode to heating mode or from heating mode
to ventilation mode.
The auxiliary heating switches off when the
engine is switched off. The auxiliary ventila-
tion switches off when you turn the key to key
position 2(Y page 145).
The auxiliary heating switches off automati-
cally after 30 minutes.
You cannot use the auxiliary ventilation to
cool the vehicle interior to a temperature
lower than the outside temperature.
Before switching onXTurn the key to position 2 in the ignition
lock ( Y page 145).XSet the desired temperature.
Auxiliary heating or ventilation can also be
switched on if the manually set climate con-
trol is activated. Optimum comfort can be
attained when the system is set to automatic
mode. Set the temperature to 22 †.
The auxiliary heating/ventilation can be acti-
vated or deactivated using the remote control
or the button on the centre console.
The on-board computer can be used to spec-
ify up to three departure times, one of which
may be preselected ( Y page 224).
