Automatic transmission
Select a shift position appropriate for the driving conditions.
■Shifting the shift lever
While the “ENGINE START STOP” switch is in IGNITION
ON mode, move the shift lever wi th the brake pedal depressed.
When shifting the shift lever b etween P and D, make sure that
the vehicle is completely stopped.

■Shift position purpose
*1: Shifting to the D position allows the sy stem to select a gear suitable for the
driving conditions. Setting the shift le ver to the D position is recommended
for normal driving.
*2: Selecting shift ranges using S mode re stricts the upper limit of the possible
gear ranges, controls engine brakin g forces, and prevents unnecessary
upshifting.

Changing shift ranges in S modeWhen the shift lever is in the S position, the shift lever can be operated as
follows: For upshifting
For downshifting
The initial shift range in S mode is set automatically to 5 or 4 according to
vehicle speed. However, the initial shift range may be set to 3 or 2 if AI-
SHIFT has operated while the shift lever was in the D position.

■ Shift ranges and their functions
●You can choose from 6 levels of engine braking force.
● A lower shift range will provide gr eater engine braking force than a
higher shift range, and the engi ne speed will also increase.

■S mode
When the shift range is 5 or lower, holding the shift lever toward “+” sets the shift
range to 6.
■AI-SHIFT
AI-SHIFT automatically selects a suitable gear according to driver performance
and driving conditions.
AI-SHIFT automatically operates when the shift lever is in the D position. (Shifting
the shift lever to the S position cancels the function.)
The engine speed remain high after releasing the accelerator pedal. This does not
indicate a malfunction.
■When driving with the cruise contro l or dynamic radar cruise control
Engine braking will not occur in S mode, even when downshifting to 5 or 4.

■If the shift lever cannot be shifted from P

■If the “S” indicator does not come on ev en after shifting the shift lever to S
This may indicate a malfunction in the automatic transmission system. Have the
vehicle inspected by Lexus dealer immediately.
(In this situation, the transmission will operate in the same manner as when the shift
lever is in D.)
■Downshift restriction warning buzzer (S mode)
To help ensure safety and driving perfor mance, downshifting operation may some-
times be restricted. In some circumstance s, downshifting may not be possible even
when the shift lever is operated. (A buzzer will sound twice.)

CAUTION
■When driving on slippery road surfaces
Do not accelerate or shift gears suddenly. Sudden changes in engine braking may
cause the vehicle to spin or sk id, resulting in an accident.

Turn signal lever
■Turn signals can be operated when
The “ENGINE START STOP” switch is in IGNITION ON mode.
■If the indicators flash faster than usual
Check that a light bulb in the front or rear turn signal lights has not burned out.
The turn signal lever can be used to show the following intentions of the
driver:
Right turn
Left turn
Lane change to the right
(push and hold the lever part-
way)
The right hand signals will flash
until you release the lever.
Lane change to the left (push
and hold the lever partway)
The left hand signals will flash
until you release the lever.

Displays the engine speed in revolutions per minute.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
Displays the engine coolant temperature.

■The meters and display illuminate when
The “ENGINE START STOP” switch is in IGNITION ON mode.
■Instrument cluster brightness adjustment
The instrument cluster brightness levels when the tail lights are on and off can be
adjusted.
■The brightness of the instrument cluster lights
When the tail lights are on, the brightness will change. However, when the sur-
roundings are bright (daytime, etc.) turning on the tail lights will not change the
instrument cluster brightness.
In addition, the brightness of the instrument cluster lights is automatically adjusted
based on the light sensor detecting how bright the surroundings are.
■When disconnecting and reconnecting battery terminals
The trip meter data will be reset.
If the trip meter was displayed last, the ODO screen will be displayed after reset-
ting.
■Customization
Setting of sensitivity of the ambient ligh t sensor used for dimming the meter lights
can be changed. (Customizable features P. 7 8 8 )
NOTICE
■To prevent damage to the engine and its components
●Do not let the indicator needle of the tachometer enter the red zone, which indi-
cates the maximum engine speed.
●The engine may be overheating if the engine coolant temperature gauge is in the
red zone (H). In this case, immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place, and check
the engine after it has cooled completely. ( P. 74 9 )
